I absolutely love largo horses. My very first horse ever was a great largo mare and stood all of 13.2 hands. She was clocked by GPS at 22 mph, which is pretty good for a horse that size. Once you're ridden not "just at a largo" but "a largo horse" ... you will be hooked.

When you are going so fast that the wind hurts your ears, yet sitting perfectly still, it just blows you away.

Anyone else out there who can relate?

a 3x Coral LaCE baby will give me a good largo, he sure is gonna be a good size, he is already bigger then my 13.2, 13.3 hand boy. His legs are SOOO long...and he JUST this past week turned One!
I love him, cant ya tell!!!!! :D

I am dying to see a largo race! (We only have fino shows down here in Miami) LOL.
PasoMoms Coral grandaughter has a pretty mean largo on her. My poor gelding struggles to keep up with her. :? We have clocked her at about 18 mph, but she wasn't going full out, just breezing along.

And her colt...is huge. He just turned 2 this week and he is already of 14 hands.

Hi, Sandi
Are you bringing any largo horses to the national race? I'm starting to work on my largo boy. He's a little under weight right now. I need to get his teeth flooted. I wormed him yestuday and removed our big fat food food fest mare.
Looking forward to seeing you and others there.
Ed

I've got a filly that will be nearing 4 years old by Nationals... she might be a candidate next year - we'll see - everything else is too young... and Emi says he's earned the right to just be a daddy! LOL!

DONT let him go any faster than where he'll stay consistent, and DO change your direction - sort of do serpentines and stuff, so he cant anticipate.....also, work on transitions, going faster and then slowing down, although start those first at different rates of corto. SLowing down and staying in gait is harder than speeding up. Just think of things to keep it interesting for the horse, and paying attention to YOU, and therefore what he's doing more carefully. I also like to do "snail shells" in corto, in and out both directions to develop flexibility and agility, helps strengthen the rear end for the greater impulsion needed in the largo.

Largo horses are incredible. BUT size does not mean you have a largo horse. My National Ch Largo Race mare, Grey Barn Serenata was only 13.3hh and she won by 2.5 laps - second was Alejandro's Coral de Vez. Also, I had three other brilliant largo horses (Stella can attest to these), Conjurada was 14 hands, Eduardo 14.3+, and Caballo Danza 13.3 hh. Sere and Eduardo was hand in hand to be the fastests. - Just thought you'd like to know. AND, Villano has a phenomenal largo - he is 14.3 and is the 2006 GNC Bella Forma Stallion/Colts. On the forests, he and Sere was almost neck and neck with speed. For now, though, we are inundated with snow and NOT riding.....:)

Welcome Maple Leaf! Glad you could join us.

I finally did get to see a largo race at Nationals this year. And you are right, they are awesome.

Are you planning to go to the Las Vegas show? They are planning a pretty cool largo race w/prize money and everything. 8-)

Our Brandy, Brilliant's mom, is a "super largo" mare. She's amazing. You think she's going as fast as she can and she kicks it in another gear. She's 13 2 and never been beaten by anyone we've ridden with on trail rides. Chinook has a really good largo but not the overdrive Brandy has. The real largo horses are a HUGE rush to ride!!!

There was a speed gaited class at the KMSHA (Rockies) Show I went to last weekend. There were 4 entries...and these horses could fly and were so steady in their gaits. One asked to be excused during the class. And at the end of the class and line up, 2 were found to have clipped themselves and were bleeding during the class in their overstriding and asked to be excused. It only left one entry. I suggested next time if they want to have this class to allow protective boots on the horses.

The horses came in the class doing their pleasure gait (similar to a largo) in that they do that in a normal 3 gait class. Then asked to do their speed gait (even faster), and then drop down to a trail walk (flat-footed walk). I only saw one entry ever break gait to a canter on the corner. These horses could really move and were 4 beating evenly...you could see and hear it. They were large/tall too.
