I kinda like the first one... big, gentle curb for the most part. Not crazy about the rollers at the sides of the mouth...would like it much better without those rollers.
The second one is eeee gads HORROR! Very high port correction gag-a-horse bit. Something I would not ever use...too many rollers and likey pinchey....over the sides of the lips.
The third bit..not too far off from what we would call a broken-mouth comfort type bit. Nice and thick through the bars of the mouth.
The last two...typical chain mouth bits...rusty "sweet water" type chain.
Contrary to popular belief...the chain mouth is quite gentle. A good "mouthing" type of bit. Good thing it has bit guards as if it didn't it would surely pinch at the shanks due to how it is made.
I'll be interested to read what others say....

I certainly feel sorry for the poor horse that has to wear that second bit...no doubt with his mouth 'tied' shut, too.

Some western (stock horse) people use bits with mouthpieces like the second one. Here it's called a "cathedral" mouthpiece. If a horse needs that much bit, I'll find another to ride.
All those bits are a bit much for me.

I may be wrong, but some bit looked more like collection items since they look like they have not been used in a while.
I wont critize any of those bits, I do thank you for posting those pictures, but I will also will like to learn from this post.
I will like to know which bit are the ones that you more often use and the purpose of each one ?.
I think that is so important to study the anatomy of the horses mouth, the is one of the principle factors before bitting a horse.
I also think the factors affecting the curb bit functioning, so many things are mayor factors here...... I just by looking at a bit cant say I get intimidated, for me is a package!!!!!.
It goes from lenth of shank to all diferent kinds of shank shape, curb chain, (sometimes looked like baby bits, but the tension chain is tight!)
thickness of mouthpiece, and very important, riders hands and where does hands are placed, and the pressure of the hands.... (light hands, heavy hands).
saludos!

They're not my bits, just some pictures I took and thought I'd share since they're not the 'normal' ones. The last one I think is used to set the head .
