Well its October again..Time to renew Rogers insurance 5 yr old WP app gelding insurred for $10,000 (I was told I could up it to $20, last year with his 3 and 4 yr old winnings) but it cost too much so I did not..He has Full Mortaility and Major medical $610 a year..rate 3.6%
Vence is by the same company but a different underwriter..he is a 7 yr old paso fino stallion for breeding/trail he is rated at 2.9% mortality and they will pay up to 1/2 his value ($8500 coverage) in colic surgery..so his is $247 per year.

I am interested in getting insurance on 3 of our show horses. What kind of insurance would you think would be the minimal coverage? Approximate value would be about 50,000. Which do you find to be the best?

I have both of mine insured for major medical/mortality for $5,000....I really didn't care about the mortality, but you have to have it to have major medical - so I just took the minimum. Jochi was basically a give-away because he has so many issues (I think I paid $500 for him and she boarded him for 4 months until I was ready for him). Both premiums are $450 apiece. I have Jerry Parks Insurance in Ocala.
Bianca will be 16 next year, so I'll have to drop her major medical and have only surgical. I had insurance on her when she had a displaced colon, so her insurance has paid off multiple times ($7,400). I think it's great and will continue to carry it on both horses. They also paid my claim this year when she had mastitis.
I have major medical and mortality on Batman and on Tikal de Nevado and got the minimum coverage on both. Jerry Parks insurance does sell a fairly cheap policy for mortality due to lightning, transportation and wind and is less than 1% for show horses or broodmares. Alex told me to put insurance on the horses after lightning killed two bred mares and a filly we were about to wean. Her logic is that nothing happens to the ones that are insured...and so far she has been right. They do not insure anything over 18 years old. Living in Ocala and watching the horses all stand together under a tree when the lightning starts makes us a little more secure, although many of my pasos are over 18 and not insured at all.

Can't insure Monty - so far no one will insure Paso Fino past age of 17 and he is 21 ! :(

Penny - I don't THINK that's true - but will have to ask my agent. I know you can't have major medical on them past 15, but I think you can carry mortality and surgical on them....I'll look at my policy later and let you know
