Youth Scholarship Update – June 26, 2007

The Scholarship Committee of the Paso Fino Foundation awarded $15,000 in college scholarships to three association members on June 23, 2007. The announcement was made in conjunction with the Saturday night activities at the Piedmont Classic in Asheville, North Carolina.

Prior to announcing the 2007 national winners, Piedmont President Bill Kerns and Piedmont Youth Chair Ann Furr recognized Mr. Dick Miller and the 4-J Family for their donation of $2000 to the Piedmont Scholarship program. Mr. Miller, a longtime supporter of youth programs within the association, issued a challenge to Piedmont members and other show participants to match his donation. By the end of the evening, almost $5000 had been raised to support young Piedmont members with their college studies. The Piedmont Scholarship(s) will be awarded in July 2007. Piedmont members interested in this program should contact Dr. Ann Furr at drfurr@alltel.net. The program is open to recent high school graduates and college students.

In addition to the Piedmont program, Foundation scholarship chair Marcia Davis recognized the establishment of three new scholarship opportunities for young PFHA members:

1. Carlos Tobon, the chair of the PFHA youth committee, and his wife Tara Tobon, have established a scholarship fund by donating a portion of Carlos’ book sales to the foundation. This year, the Tobon family has awarded a $500 grant to Lorena Figueroa, a junior at the State University of New York at Oneonta, N.Y. Lorena is the daughter of professional trainer Luis and Esperanza Figueroa. She is majoring in Business Economics with a concentration in International Business. In addition, Carlos has donated an additional $500 to be split between the three 2007 Foundation Scholarship winners.

2. In 2006, the Deep South region began a scholarship program to honor the memory of longtime member, Colonel Wendell Cot. Within weeks, the region received donations allowing them to fund a $2000 scholarship award to Emily Deaton, another 2005 Foundation scholarship winner. In 2007, Deep South once again committed to “paying the way” for Miss Cindy Palaez to attend community college in Mississippi.

3. Thanks to the hard work of Sherry Teney, Germaine Ely, and many others, a memorial scholarship was established to honor Jo Moore and recognize a deserving youth member who best exemplified Jo’s sportsmanship, love of the horses, friendship, and courage. Lorena Figueroa was once again selected as the recipient of the inaugural award of $1000.

The foundation scholarship committee was established in 2004 to raise funds to assist deserving PFHA high school seniors further their education. The initial committee – Dwight Graber, Allen Freedman, Jose Davila, Gary Goscha, Sheila Spence, Marla Graber, and Marcia Davis – were joined in 2006 by Dr. Gay Culverhouse. Although the committee was not formed until July 2004, the group was able to organize a fundraiser called the “Legendary Mares Belly Auction” which raised more than $60,000 at the 2004 Grand National Show.

In June 2005, the committee proudly announced its first group of five scholarship winners. The scholarships were awarded based upon four criteria:

i. Academic achievement.

ii. Community service.

iii. Association activities.

iv. Financial need.

Each component was weighed equally and applicants were required to submit transcripts, letters of recommendation, and financial information along with an autobiographical essay.

2005 scholarship winners included Lorena Figueroa, Jen Corey, Shelley DeLong, Emily Deaton, and Katy Miklic. Each of these outstanding young women has now completed their sophomore year of college while maintaining exemplary grade point averages.

2006 saw another group of outstanding applicants. Emily Miller and Amanda Kiziah of the Piedmont region were each awarded $5000 scholarships which Julie Beaudet, Bridgette Berisford, Alicia Novoa, and Sara Damiani also received awards.

Prior to awarding the 2007 scholarships, the committee members unanimously agreed to increase the maximum scholarship award to $10,000 and to award two $2500 scholarships. The 2007 scholarship recipients are as follows:

· The $10,000.00 scholarship was awarded to Luisa Betancur. Luisa is the daughter of Alonzo and Melba Betancur of Summerfield, Florida. Luisa moved to Florida from Bogotá, Colombia, S.A. while she was in elementary school. Despite having to learn a new language, Luisa quickly became an honor student and a school leader. Luisa recently graduated fifth in her class of more than four hundred at Belleview High School. In addition to her academic achievements, Luisa was active in the National Honor Society, was captain of the varsity cross country team, and received the straight As and perfect attendance award. She took advanced placement and honors program courses all the while maintaining a 4.5 grade point average. In addition to her academic achievements, Luisa started a toy and clothing drive for underprivileged children in Colombia and provided Christmas for more than ninety children. She was the recipient of a Florida Bright Futures Scholarship and will attend the University of Florida in the fall. She plans to major in psychology and eventually pursue a medical degree.

· $2500 scholarships were awarded to Lisa Corey and Cindy Palaez.

Lisa, the daughter of Tim and Rose Corey and the granddaughter of Leo Lomangino, will attend James Madison University in the fall and will major in vocal performance. She is an honor student and participates in many school organizations. Lisa is an active rider and has won national amateur and youth champions.

Cindy Palaez is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Palaez of Purvis, Mississippi. Since coming to the U.S., Cindy has been instrumental in assisting her father with his training business. As the first member of her family to speak English, Cindy quickly became her dad’s secretary and translator. She plans to attend community college in Mississippi and major in business.
