I am just destined to never get another sound horse.
Don't know how many people remember a few years ago, I donated one of my Paso geldings to a little special needs girl. He is the one I bought for a trail horse, and it turns out that he had been injured and had calcium deposits in his suspensories. I couldn't use him for trail riding, but he was fine for the occasional short ride like they were doing.
Well, I find out yesterday that the mom has completely flipped out. She got on drugs, left her husband and children to live with her boyfriend. The husband has the horses, the grandmother got the girl, Brandi. The son is living on his own.
I am calling the husband today to see what he wants to do with Cass. I was, up to that point, happily shopping for a new trail horse. But now I will have 5 cripple horses to feed if Cass comes back.
No, I can't put any of them down. They are too bad to ride, but not bad enough to die.
There is a possibility that Cass could go to another home where he would be very lightly used. He is a superb horse...honest, gentle and totally safe. He is a son of Bandolero Royal, and had a blazing largo before he went lame.
Anyway, I guess I will find out today if I get him back. If anyone has any suggestions for a private home, let me know!

I have run across several therapudic/handicapped riding programs that are always looking for horses like this. Have you checked into any of those yet? I know shipping might be an issue, but you just never know w/this group...we can work something out...

don't stop looking Linda. You deserve a good horse and there are so many strong sound horses out there. I do feel your pain. You just keep drawing and painting and sculpting ,creating for the world of horses anhorse lovers the images you can do so well and as reciprocation there will be coming to you what you need.I feel this and all us on the AMPASOBB and PFBB do too.Stand strong hang in there and the right homes for you deserving horses will come too. the universe/God willing will deliver the horse you have been waiting for. You have good thoughts out there. You know a lot about horses and the right one with the using strengths is looking for you now.

Oh, I know there are wonderful horses out there. The problem right now is supporting 5 horses I can't ride, can't give away and can't put to sleep!
Since Cass isn't totally lame, maybe someone will be willing to give him a forever home...which is what I thought the one he is at now would be. I have also considered finding a lease home for my Paint mare. She can also be ridden lightly, and a sweeter horse doesn't exist. But the last time I leased her out, to use as a brood mare, she came back to me with her leg about ripped off.
Open to suggestions...

Well, finally heard from the man that has Cass. He wants him to stay. Says that he has been a huge help to him and Brandi through all the mess they are going through. I told him he was welcome to keep him as long as he wasn't a burden, but to let me know the moment he got to be one.
Good for Cass.

Good Grief what a shame!! I'd surely try to find a home for the paint. Your dream riding horse is just waiting for you to find it!!!

You know Linda...if you declared yourself a Lame Horse Sanctuary you could accept donations and write your expenses off! ;-) Of course, you'd probably end up with a larger number of lame horses.
I do feel for you. I have my two oldsters here, and nothing really to do for/with them but feed them and take care of them. Old founder episodes, arthritis, age, taking their toll. They're kid-safe enough for lessons and stuff, but not for any serious riding.
You have to have a big heart not to unload them on someone, or send them to slaughter. I'm sure there is a special place in horse-heaven for you.
i can only believe that the horse Gods will provide you with a riding horse, Linda! ((hug))

Might sound like a silly question..but could they pull a cart? Is there another way to enjoy them and keep them moving?
Sending you a big hug. It's not easy.

It isn't a silly question at all.
I don't think so, though.
Desi is 25 and has full blown Cushings and arthritis.
Casi is badly foundered. She walks on the soles of her feet. It is a wonder she walks at all.
Cita has a mystery lameness. It was diagnosed as a fusing hock, but the more I watch her move, the more I am thinking it is in her hip or back like my husband originally said. It isn't the weight on her back that makes her limp...she limps all the time.
Nutter the Paint is the only one that is sound enough to pull a cart. She is basically rideable, but rough as a cob. She also has beginning navicular.
