Well he be good to the mares? Responsible, caring? That's all I'd need to know...give him time and I bet he'll think about a paso stallion soon enough. ;-)

I am actually concerned about the SIZE of the stallion......he is BIG. I kinda think the cross might work better with Appy mares and a Paso stallion, even if he had to stand on a box to do the job....But huge stallion, small mare....worried about a too big foal.

Guy is not too far away..going to go check out his operation. Just hate to see horses with the breeding we have, going to an outcross. But then , I may be broke, but I am still picky. Turned down a really large man who wanted our schooling stallion for long distance trail rides. Colt is TOO YOUNG and would break down with this big guy . No sale. Cried all the way I was NOT going to the bank. How do you sacrifice a horse to feed others? I need more homes like the Utah people. These folks DUG DEEP to afford this horse. Hec, I DUG to afford mine back when we were starting. We have to DIG every day now to keep the power turned on and hay in the barn. We have over the years, run hurricane rescue for free out of Florida to the safty of our place, never got reembursed a single dime....bought lots of horses from people who were totally pinched, like we are now. We have loved and fed and professionally trained the horses we bought. Somewhere, there is this thing I always believed....what goes around..comes around. Holding my breath for that to happen. Horse economics people say that 17% of the horse community is rich. 13% is poor. And the rest are middle class. Sure wish one of that top 17% was on this list. <LOL>
Excuse me for butting in, but.. it's a proven fact that size (in horses) does not matter.
You can breed a clydesdale stud (assuming he could get low enough) to a mini without problems.
If I remember the link i'll post it.

Yeah, I think the mare determines the size of the foal when it is born. It may grow up bigger than mom, but she makes sure that it is a good size to get born!
I may be totally wrong on this...heard it somewhere.

That is correct Linda - horses are one of the few mamals that the female determines the size and seldomly have problems with the birth due to size of foal... I have seen some rediculous crosses over the years - welsh mares bred to full size Paint stallions - foals as cute and small as can be when born but almost too big to nurse by 3 & 4 months LOL... not sure why anyone would want to do that cross but a Paso nare is still a full size horse, as far as build goes. The cross would not be dangerous.

I worked for a farm that bred Arabs to Shetlands...the mare "controls" the foal size..we didn't have any problems foaling out Shetland mares. By the time the foals were six months old they were taller than their moms usually...

but.. it's a proven fact that size (in horses) does not matter.
Leave it to a man to come up with this one!!! :rofl
The mare's uterus will determine size of the foal, so yes, you could breed a Draft horse to a mini, but why would anyone want to do it?????

If the stallion is not a few spot or snow cap then there is no guarantee that the foal will be appy colored. And with appy coloring you may have to wait a couple of years before spots show up...!!
Pasos and appys can be cross registered with the Tiger Horse Assn as outcrosses making the foals available for registration. But the foals must gait...
Anyone interested in info on the registry please PM me...
I believe size does matter ... do you see any 1st generation draft minis..(or any draft minis ?).. but in horses of average size the difference is very little at time of birth. Moderation and common sense about it is the determining factor. I would not breed a 16.2H 1,350 lb appy stallion to a 14.H 850 lb mare. She may foal without vet assistance but that does not mean she would not be seriously uncomfortable during the last few months of pg.... AND does not mean there will not be excessive tearing at time of birth. You might have to wean sooner as the foal would be pulling more from the mare than a smaller foal.

BINGO!!!!! Even with my Paso mares bread to my BIG 15H Paso stallion...boy thoses fillies sure eat the hec out of those poor mares. Yeah, they were BORN small enough but that sure changed quick. Thank God for suppliments. Anyway..the Appy guys place is crap. 3 strand barbed wire fence...one loafing shed ...free breeding. That was a big NADDA. SOrry to not update you all sooner but we are still doing hospital runs and stuff. Good news....hubby is now being allowed to walk again. Carefully. He still cannot help out with any chores but at least I am not being a hot and cold running nurse and maid service. We still need to sell at least 10 horses to get caught up.
