This is me and Rita. I believe this is a largo at first and then we corto. (A really nice video!)

And the pics. I cropped mine to make it bigger.

Me getting Rita ready.

Not to toot my own horn, but I think I look pretty darn good up there!
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y65/jklawitter/Paso%20Fino/7feebfc1.jpg

I rode a little mare named Charlata. I got a pic of her before riding, but again, have to wait until Monday. She hasn't been ridden since June, I lunged her after saddling, she humped her back a few times, and was largoing like crazy, but started calming down. Rita was fussing and broke her bosal, so Bailey and Stella were getting a new one so I was going to ride Sher in the round pen.

Went to get up and she about flipped out! Like she had never been rode. Tried again, same thing. So I told Stella. Luckily Jackie saw it all b/c that dang mare didn't flinch when Stella tried to mount! So I mounted and she was fine!

Stella thinks it was b/c we were in the round pen, only time she was mounted in there was when she was broke. After that, she just wanted to GOOOO so we had a little talk about who was in charge. Bailey and I rode in the arena while Stella went to show Jackie what to do. We were doing good so I rode over to the gate and opened it (off of Sher's back) and off we went. Well, off Rita went! Got a little bit going and Sher decided, nope, she wasn't going! Got her moving again and she stopped again. So I had to really kick her before she finally said "Well crap! You're really going to make me do this!" and she grudgingly followed Rita down the drive to the front pasture, in a zig zag pattern HAHAHA

I told Bailey "You watch, I won't have a BIT of problem going on the way back" and BOY was I right! If I had let those reins go, we would have literally FLOWN back to the barn! As much as I wanted to Largo, I knew I couldn't let her do that so I forced her to corto (even though I really wanted to walk but no matter what I did, she wouldn't walk). When we finally got back to the barn, she walked on a loose rein outside of the round pen.

She just needs some riding time, and I really enjoyed riding her but she is NO Rita! LOL She's also a Columbian/Peruvian mix so was a little bit "bumpier" to me, she even Troche some so I would have to bump her back. But I will ride her again and work her when I go again.

Isn’t she beautiful?

Afterwards, we stopped off at a driving show but they had already stopped. For those nonhorsey ppl that don’t know what manure is, here ya go! (See the sign? It says Manure HAHAHA)

And Kerry, here’s your darling Aggie!
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y65/jklawitter/Paso%20Fino/Aggie.jpg

Oh my god! Hay bale! How could I forget! And damnit, no, we didn't have the camera!

When we put Rita up, she went to go roll. That's normal.

What's NOT normal is WHERE she rolled. That little lady went to the FULL round bale and laid down on TOP of it and started to roll!! She, of course, slid to the ground, rolled a bit, got up to do the other side and did the SAME thing!!!! We were rolling with laughter! It was great!

I can't wait to show yaw what I have of her. We had so much fun. I can't wait to go back. What she has not told yow about is her Jacob. He likes to say uhoh even when he does something on purpose. He is so cute. PH says his favorite words are no, uhoh, and dahe. Momma comes when he sees food.

Really great pics! I noticed you said she was a bit rough and I then noticed your saddle looks to be right on her shoulder that could be why.. If you put the saddle back 2-3 fingers behind her shoulder she may smooth out for your..

I sure do enjoy your pics sounds like a fun day!

Debbie, we all wish!!! There's a waiting line for her now! Kerry, me, and then Bailey! Since Kerry has first dibs, I get first dibs of her foal! She will be bred next year to Pazarro de Favorito 2nd stud down (http://greatblazes.com/Stallions.htm)

Oh thanks for the Aggie pics..and you got some great shots of Rita and Charlota...she's not easy to get...she's a bit nosey too! I see Aggie's dressing for winter already. Thanks for sharing! :D

BTW...I put dibs on Rita before she was under saddle, and I'm patiently waiting for Stella to get her babies from her.

Pasofan, it was Charlata that was rough. Rita isn't rough at ALL. And we checked the saddle, her shoulder didn't go under the saddle at all. I was actually showing that to Bailey LOL

Kerry, but I called DIBS on the foal first so there!

What is the breeding on the bay mare? She looks just like the mare that I grew up with. Must have Cabeza in her background.

Charlota de la Isla is her name, Cindy.

Thanks Kerry. They are not related at all. If you said she was my mare's full sister I would not argue. She has no Peruvian though as was said. She is half and half PR/Col.

Each paso fino gaits differently. Some are smoother, some are foot slammers, some have a feather touch, some have higher action, some lower. Be careful not to confuse trucha with trot. Paso finos can trot and pace as well as gait. A half and half Colombian, PPR should have fabulous gait. She may have been arguing with you in which case their gait can be rough and uneven but get them out on the trail and it smooths out and is like silk. The three paso finos that Bailey road at our place are Col/PPR mix and Chinook is a 1/2 and 1/2. It is amazing how diferent each one feels when you ride it even when all are gaiting correctly.

Thanks for the info Cindy, was hoping you'd share your thoughts on where the similarities came from..if you've got time.

She's a fairly well gaited mare, I think...bit rusty from being a lady of leisure for a while...and had recently been moved from her girlfriends, where she was queen of the paddock! She has been used to pony greenies, and she works pretty well on a loose rein. I posted another shot of her under saddle, which was taken when she was being ridden regularly.

Rita is an autopilot mare...born broke, and self corrects...why she's a demo mare. :D Why I WANT her...she could teach me a LOT!

Cindy
10-19-2005, 12:37 AM
I don't have any idea why they look so much alike. They are not at all related. The only similarity is that they are both half PR. My mare was also half Peruvian. A daughter of Cabeza de Borrascoso. Here is a picture of her that was taken at Stone Mountain at the National show in 1980. The picture was published in the Atlanta Journal/Constitution. I was 14, she was 5. Her name was Dama Dicha MoVE if you want to look her up.

gorgeous! With the DSLD problem in Peruvians I would think some of the breeders would go to paso fino crosses.

Rita taught me a lot about the Paso gaites. We hit them all, ask Ph. While the gaits on MGs girls were different in smothness and haveyness of the foot. Rita was fast and smooth and you could feel where she placed each of her feet. It felt as thought she had only one foot on the ground at all times.

I am hooked. No dought about it. :D

I do notice that in both dam's lines, there is an inbreeding, Batalla to his daughter Estrella. In your mare, through Cacique...and in her mare, through Lula FN. Have to check that one out a bit further..but they DO look alike!

BTW...I was thinking about it a while ago, and the first Paso I ever rode was so like Rita...same color, same forgiving and willing temperament, and very talented and well gaited. Rita's pure Colombian, and I'm pretty sure the other was too, I know her sire was several times Resorte IV, so always try to remember that they are individuals..and like the Kyles pointed out...they don't all move exactly alike...just like humans don't all move the same way. :D

Cindy
10-19-2005, 01:45 AM
Like I said, the only similarity is that they are both half PR. You will find Batalla/Dulce Sueno line/in bred in pretty much every Puerto Rican horse. I think Dicha favored more her father, Cabeza, than she did her mother so I do not think the similarity comes from the mother. It is just one of those things, I think. I would like to see this mare more. I have a definite soft spot for her particular look.

This is she under saddle. I've got several others, but mostly close up face shots, as she WAS boss mare. I'll see what I can dig up, she was in the same paddock as mine, so I do have more...I have one of her taking a siesta..which is no help..but it's pretty cute.

Now Bailey you can come back and ride ours again and you'll be able to compare and remember the four types of action. They all gait correctly but they are all different.

Our stallion, "Sultan", has the smooth as silk extremely precise gait and he even walks like that - very precisely - and that's in the pasture. The three Bailey rode of ours are all show trained, fairly hot, high energy, have done well in shows and have a very even, precise and snappy gait. But you can feel their footfall. AND they are NOT beginner's rides. Sultan's gait is even and snappy (not heavy footed) too but his gait is the smoothest. Sultan is the closest to "dead broke" in the arena that we own.

If you want to feel something different and are in FL try riding Barb Preiss's Corito de Vez. Talk about smooth - you can't even feel the footsteps. It's like being on a hover craft. And our largo mare is like riding a bullet train - the faster she goes, the smoother she is.

There are so many great ones out there. The more good ones you ride, the better you are able to select one that gaits correctly and has the characteristics that suit YOU.

That was my fault, saying Peruvian instead of PR. Oops!

Motor, Stella is the one saying she was Trocha(troche), not trotting. So I bumped her back and she went back to a corto.

She was fighting me the whole time in the arena and when we went out, she did NOT want to leave the barn. She just needs more ride time and I'll definitly give her that! I want to ride her more, just in a different saddle LOL

MG I would love to come ride yours again. Let me know when it will be a good time for you and I will be their.

I would like to test ride Charlota. I thing she would be a treat of a ride. I watched her front feet as PH was riding her. They kinda turn out word as she places them on the ground. You know like up-circle-down type step. Do you know what I mean. I can't think of another way to discribe it.

That's another interesting thing about the paso fino gait - some paso finos have a rotation of the foot when they move. Peruvians rotate from the shoulder like swimming but in paso finos they generally rotate from the knee or the ankle. If I remember correctly one is called paddling and the other is called winging. Toledo, a famous paso fino, did this. It is only allowed in the show arena when it is very minimal. According to one Colombian paso fino authority this technique developed in the lowlands where there is a lot of swamp because it helps them pull the foot loose from sucking mud. According to this same author the lowlands paso finos also had a lower action gait whereas the mountain paso finos had higher action to help them avoid tripping over roots and rocks.

Our largo mare rotates from the ankle and she actually steps along a line when she moves. She doesn't cross over but she could actually walk along a traffic line on a highway she is so close in her action. According to a Colombian breeder and judge, closeness is desireable in the paso fino but not that close so this would be considered a fault but I'll tell you - this mare can go down a trail that is four inches wide with no problems so it is very advantageous in a trail horse and that is probably why it developed in some. There are several tribes of native American who walk this way - one foot directly in front of the other - because it's easier to go through the woods like that.

We're in town working on our house right now but we'll drop you a note when we're coming back up to ride. Looks like rain in the near future though.    We have an endurance ride this weekend but we don't do rainy rides. Just not fun.
