I had a ball for my mare and she never played with it. I've seen pastures where the ball is never touched, and then I've seen horses (via youtube) that you laugh hysterically watching them play with the balls!
What do your horses do? Got pics?

I've hung them up and put them on the ground, some have played but our 2 now, do not.
I went and got a big ball from Wallyworld and Del popped it playing in just a fe wminutes. I need one made of army tarm/tent material LOL

NOPE - they will play with, steal and run off with anything that is NOT a horse toy (in other words things that belong to ME)... they will play with the other horses but not big on store bought toys...
I found when mine had less pasture/space they have higher play drives but with large fields they keep themselves amused with herd activities.

Jenn, I wondered if those big balls would hold up! Was it the ones in the big bin, for like $2.50?
I wanted to buy one for one of Stella's colts, but if he won't play with it, why bother?

I have a Jolly Ball in the paddock and the horse and pony ignore it.

Yup, those are the balls. Funny side story- It was in Feb I wanted to get some for them to play with. I walked into Walmart and asked the toy person if they had big balls. Walked into grocey store that used to have them, asked clerk same thing. I got same  reaction

Here's our Pinto filly, Pequena, as she discovers her new ball.
Then she shows her mom, Canela, her new toy...

And then she rolls the ball UNDER her mom...

Hmmmm, I have three who regularly play with balls...Trooper, Bruiser and Buddy. In fact, to them EVERYTHING is a 'ball.' I bought Buddy a boat bumper and he ignored it, but last night he was thorwing it and chasing it.
I was just working with Rosie and the Parelli ball. She tries to step on it, so not quite ready for socker, but she'll nose it and push it.
Lots of horses sit or layon and pop the big balls. I think mine prefer balls to be mostly flat so they can grab them with their mouth. I have two Jolly Balls, one I hung and it's great for teather ball...and the other got destroyed. Boat bumpers are a lot cheaper and tougher.
This video was last winter. Horses don't seem to like to kick balls so much as throw them in the air, or carry them around, and of course the MOST fun is to tease other horses with them.

I love that video Carol! You know, we really need more Bruiser videos!
Whose horses were it that were fighting over one of those balls? I think it was in the pic contest? Both mouths wide open?

Mine seem to like the balls better if I tie a piece of old lead rope to them. Then they drag them around and "twirl" them and they're easier to fight over.

Only when Legado was young did he play with the balls. Here are some pics of him:

He also had an apple that he liked playing with.

But now, he won't touch them! Neither will any of the others.
I tried buying him and my 2 yo colt one of those larger balls to play with, but they had no interest in it at all.
Leave a hose out and they have a blast with that...especially if there is water coming out of it!

Thanks for sharing the hilarious pictures!!
We boarded with two paso fino stallions who loved to play with a jolly ball with a rope on it. They'd twirl it, throw it over the fence and you'd have to fetch it. A mini stallion we boarded with fell in love with his Parelli ball and in the process flattened it.
SloughP'd rather turn on the water faucet and squirt you with the hose or play head wrestling with the other boys. Sultan prefers to eat and Brilliant prefers to flirt with the ladies next door. Chipmunk had rather harass the big boys so none of them play with balls.

Balls are my colts specialty. Earlier this spring he was suspected of having one post gelding. For that reason he was kept in my backyard, however, he was fine. Here's a clip of him playing with a yogo ball and I'm trying to load another one of him playing with a kids hippity hop.

Well Marinero plays with everything, buckets, tubs, cones, rope, pieces of wood. But whne I gave him a ball he gave it the evil eye. I guess he needs to get used to it before playing iwth it

I do not have a ball, but I have taken huge plastic jugs and braided a handle to tie two togeather and he grabs the handle and has a lot of fun with them until he finally flattens the jugs. I have taken a gunny sack an filled it with empty tin cans and tied it shut. This is his favorite toy, it makes a lot of noice and he can really throw it around because it is so light weight. He also has a big plastic barrel, (50 gal size) that has a few rocks in it so it will make noise also. He will grab it by the lip on the top, stand it up and then paw at it to knock it down so he can stand it up again.

I have to get a ball for the boys. I'd love to see what they think of it. Their favorite toys so far are halters and fly masks...they love to swing and toss them.
And one time they had a dead squirrel before I could get it away from them. that was pretty nasty. They just had fun spinning it around.

Exclusivo loves playing with his balls (no he is not a stallion lol) He has 2 in his stall, one is a jolly ball and the other a big white hard ball with something in it that makes it rattle. He has had that ball forever, he is 10 and from what I was told it has followed him around with all 4 of his owners (BTW I'm his last home, he is my soul-horse.) He takes the hard one and bounces it off of his nose in the corner of his stall. With the jolly ball he does many things, he flapps it around, he tosses it, sometimes over the wall, hitting his brother Poeta in the next stall, he never tosses it to the morgan on the other side, or the aisle, always to Poeta. And the funniest (and messiest) thing he does with it is dunks it in his water bucket till it is full of water (it has numerous holes in it) Then he takes it in his mouth by the ball, not the handle and slams it into the ground as water spurts out all the holes. He does it over and over again till it's dry. He's such a funny horse. I board at a huge stable and every time he gets to playing he draws a croud lol. I put them in the turnout with him, and he likes tossing and stomping on it, or running around the pasture with it flapping out of his mouth lol.
