Have you ever seen this? I haven't. It was like watching a carcrash. I couldn't look away.

Well I guess you then focus on the horse falling on you...

Just imagine some first time horse owners attempting to tie up the leg of a horse that is already too much for them to handle....I cringe at the thought. Oh, yeah, they tell their friends....then you just hop on.
Then call the vet and 911.

Yeah. Hopefully the horse falls on them instead of breaking it's leg and Darwin gets another one.

Sadly, I can well imagine a new owner trying this. It's very dangerous.
I went and helped ONCE with a mustang round-up (it was horrible), and watched as they threw and trimmed feet and gelded the stallions. They broke two horse's legs in the process. It was probably the most horrible day of my life.
Years ago I went to clinic where they taught us the Flying W to cure bucking and rearing horses. Thinking back, it's probably the worst thing I've ever done to a horse. It breaks their spirit.
I'm sure glad times are changing...one owner at a time.
OMG! stupid is NOT dead! it still lives!

OK - I'll say it...I don't find this all that "mean". I've done it. I would NOT want someone who does not know what they are doing trying it. Would I do it again - depends on the horse and the circunstances.
Carol - you mean the "running W"? Yes, I agree that is pretty brutal. Have I ever done it? Yep. Would I do it now? Nope.
I can sense the sharks begining to circle.....

Ok, so here I am backing up Beth, but not just because I'm terrified of her.
When I was in college, we had a clinician come in and show us this very same technique. The school used 3 horses for the demo that had been bought at auction, all 3 bucking fools.
After having a leg tied up and being ridden, all 3 seemed to be cured. All 3 did end up staying in the college's riding program for at least the time I was there, which was 2 years.
okay, i'll say it too. i started out with an old timer in my teens that wasn't afraid to use a running "W" or this method.
but in 9 years i only saw him use it twice.
it's for people that either have a real renegade that was started the hard way or someone that doesn't think it should take more than 3 days to have a horse under saddle. JMO.

wait a minute!!!!!!!! you're talking about the running W used improperly.
Used like it should be it's very safe, not too hard on a horse, and a good tool for solving some very dangerous problems. But it is a tool that's easy to use improperly and too roughly.
Also the right kind of ground work will get a horse ready to ride with never a buck. Too many trainers don't know what that kind of ground work is. Working with horses there's always some new issue to challenge the knowlege, and if a person isn't inventive enough to figure out a gentle and yet effective way to solve a problem, they frequently resort to excessive force, which frequently just creates more problems.

Beth I'm not out here judging anyone for doing it....I do have an issue with making it a training video that implies it's easy to do. I'd love to see a disclaimer on it....please do no attempt this at home without a trained professional showing you how not to hurt you AND your horse.
There are many methods out there that are not cruel when done in the hands of the right person. But then you show the method to the yahoo down the road and you'll see the poor horse out on the trails like that.

I would say the running W and flying W are the same thing. Yes I've done it myself (had a herd of 11 wild ponies I rescued and needed to make child-safe). But would I do it now. No.
