Thanks for your patience w/the site down. ;-) Seems we are sucking up the bandwidth again. ;-)
We might have to curtail our useage of the gifs a bit. :-? I know, I know, it hurts me too.
I'll keep you guys posted on the out come.

Can photos on the forums cause a bandwidth problem? They're not uploaded here; they're just links, so they shouldn't really "take up space."

Another thought: the number of users does affect bandwidth. And we've been having a lot of "spambot" guests. So that might be causing a problem. I don't know what to do about it, though.

Thinking about those SpamBot guests, has anyone else been getting a LOT of spam in their e-mail lately???? The last two weeks, mine has been awful...and it never used to be bad, maybe a few a week (most went to Bulk).
BTW - glad the site is up.
It's pretty easy to size your pictures smaller to use less memory.
And how much is all OUR extra bandwidth costing you, should probably be the next question.
Whew! but wiping sweat off my forehead and so glad to see it back. By the way is Cousin Carol N. going to be okay?

Lori,
How about if we post pictures, but then remove them from our posts after a few days? Would that help? Once everyone has seen them there isn't much use leaving them on the board.
Just a thought :)
Glad to have the board back.

Am I wrong, but as far as I know links (which is how you post pics) don't really affect bandwidth. Since they are linked not uploaded.
We found out on my Newf board that it was someone hidden (on the same server) using all the bandwidth. Made it look like our board. Moving to your own server I'll bet will help the problem.

That wouldn't be the best solution as sometimes newbies come on and want to read posts going way back, heck, sometimes I do that too...and it's pretty disappointing to see the pics deleted. I usually leave my pics in my photo host for about four weeks or so....

If that's the case why did Steph Dunkin always ask that the pics be no more than 350 pixels wide on the old board? After all, they're still taking up room on the page? Not beefin'....just curious to know.

One of the options is to upload your avatar, which does end up taking up room. But still unsure if linking takes up more bandwidth.
Oops forgot to say pixel wide & height does matter as anything bigger messes up the way the board looks/scrolls.

I think this is how it works (someone can correct me if I'm wrong): Since we use photo links, rather than uploading photos directly to the site, the size of the photos doesn't directly affect bandwidth. The link to a huge photo doesn't take up any more "space" than the link to a tiny one. However, bandwidth is affected by the number of people using the site and how long they're here. And a lot of people (like me) have slow dial-up connections. So it takes time to wait for even small photos to link & load -- it takes forever for big photos to link & load. And the longer I (or anyone else) is on the site, the more bandwidth we're using. With small photos, people are spending less time here, waiting to see them, so less bandwidth is being used.
Same principle with our lovely spambot guests. The more often they visit, the longer they're connected, the more bandwidth they use up.

I don't think we should completely cut everything out, however, I think we know when we are being excessive.
I think some of it is not only the photos, but the animated gifs (which I love).
So perhaps we don't need ten mad smilies to make our point. One should do it. ; )
I'm discussing our options w/my hoster and I'll get back to you guys on the best way to proceed.
I agree w/Carol N. about not deleting the pix. I hate that. I leave mine up forever. lol
