I have a mare here that has been abused a freaks out if you touch her legs. We are working through this problem but in the mean time I need to trim here feet ASAP. I have purchased a seditive for her, but I have never used this particular medication before.
What experience have you had with using ACEVET as a seditive? I need to give her enough to take the edge off so I can do her feet but I do not want her falling down on top of me either. I have a set of stocks that I use for trimming so I can deal with her leaning on the stocks a bit.
I will be using the ACEVET I.M. not I.V. The paperwork that came with the meds gives me quite a wide dosage range (from 0.05 mg/kg - 0.11mg/kg.) I just want to know how well or poor this medicine works. If you have used ACEVET can you tell me what you used it for and how well it worked? Should I use the lower dosage rate or will I need to increase it a bit.
Thanks

is this a brand name or the actual chemical name?..(sounds like brand name)..Is it just acepromazine? If its a brand name the chemical name should be on it somewhere. What does your vet reccommend ? Have they used this drug..

super drug - we use it with Primero for the farrier, who although good at his business, is loud and intense and Primero flips himself out.

Ace IM in my experience is rather ineffective. I've done horses that have been aced IV before, they haven't fallen over, Ya just have to be careful! if your hoofstand is a hoofjack, then let the cradle hold the leg, and you are much safer.
I'm not sure I would put a terrified horse in stocks with only IM ace, if she is scared enough to panic out of the ace, you'll be in trouble.
One horse I've had to do aced got the med as a behavior modification program - he too was terrorized with his legs, so the first time he got full dose, second time half dose, third time he was fine.
If your mare is basically sound, is there a way that you can set up an area that is gravelly that she can get a lot of movement on so she can self wear til she is safe to trim? Can you hand walk her on pavement twice a day? - soak her good first then get her on rough ground if she is not tender on it. It won't do the trim for ya, but it will get some excess wall off.

I can do the Ace IV if I have to I guess.
This mare has been in the stocks and she is not crazy. She just will not tolerate me working on her feet! The last time we did her feet we used the throw ropes to lay her down! I would rather use the ACE to modify her behaviour, and let her learn to tolerate some one working with her feet.
Thanks all

I have no clue about the Ace but we had our vet out to sedate one of ours a few yrs back that was terrified of being handled. The vet gave the first shot, then the second shot. Nothing. It was like she hadnt been given anything. He said he was afraid to give anymore and the farrier didnt get to do the job. :-?
Later on we met a wonderful trainer/farrier who spent maybe 10 minutes with her and she was standing like it was nothing for him. It was unbelievable to watch.
