I am getting ready to go meet the vet in Louisburg where we keep our TWH, Mack. He apparently has colic symptoms. He wasn't feeling well last night, but they didn't call us until today. I am not sure how I feel about that yet, because I need to concentrate on Mack. And I don't know how bad he was last night....maybe he was just a little off and they didn't want to call me. Well, I will worry about that later when I have more info.
Good thoughts and prayers please (we accept all kinds of prayers -- just keep them coming! ). I am off to Louisburg.

I will definitely be praying for you. I know your mind is really busy now, but it IS unsettling to not have been called as soon as a problem was suspected. May God place his hand over Mack until you and the vet can get there. I am sure he will be able to fight the colic and the vet will be able to help him out.

It is good to catch it early! Been through a colic recently myself and with early intervention, it can be quickly turned around.

Good luck Jeany...just remember that horses get mild colic for lots of reasons...and some get over it 'just' that fast too. I'll keep my fingers/toes crossed for Mack.
Let us know how everything goes and what the vet says.

Sometimes all it takes is a bit of oil, water and a shot. I'm hoping it will be this simple for you and Mack.

Prayers for you and Mack....but with the weird weather lately - and yesterday, very warm 60s to below freezing at night in the Carolinas, its not unusual for horses to get queezy, particularly a bit older ones. Keeping my fingers crossed!

Good luck, Jeany- we had a faithful old TWH named Sorrel Mack K who served us well for many years. I don't know if he's alive still or not, but he was last living happily as a donation to our vet (sarcoids beyond our control).

The werid thing is,is that this morning me and my dad were talking about Mack. And then the phone rang and it was John,I was praying that Mack and Nisha were ok.Then my dad told me.
My parents took Mack to the vet school and had tests done on him. They said he is doing better,But his splenid is still inflamed. So I just hope that after my Band concert tonight we will be able to go get him. :D
And I hope he'll be running around again soon :runaway:

Good news! No surgery!
Yesterday afternoon when they were getting the horses in at DD (where we keep Mack and Nisha), they noticed that Mack was not first into the barn as usual. He came in last and didn't seem to feel good. There were no glaring colic symptoms, but he "Just didn't seem like himself." However, he ate and drank, so they just kept a close watch on him. Overnight, he pooped several times and the poop was normal.
This morning, he still didn't seem "like himself," so John called to tell us that he thought we should call the vet. I called the vet, and she told me to go see him and call her to let me know how he looked. When I got there, he pinned his hears at me (as he usually does when I approach his stall -- he is so charming that way) and I thought all was normal. But when I stepped into his stall, he stood with his head in the corner and wouldn't come to me as he usually does. His back was roached as if he were in pain, and his eyes didn't look right to me -- he didn't look "like himself." I called the vet and told her to come -- it doesn't take much for me to feel in over my head at this point in my horse career, and I'd rather err on the side of being cautious.
The vet came a couple of hours later, during which time, I went home to get the truck in case we had to haul him to the vet school. When we all got back to the barn, Mack seemed to look a little better. She took his vitals and they were all normal. He had gut sounds and pink gums. Then she did a rectal exam and found a problem -- she suspected some condition where a part of the intestine looped over between the spleen and the cavity wall against which the spleen rests. I can't remember the name of the condition. She told us we could either watch him there for the day and see if he gets better or trailer him to the vet school for treatment. She said the trailering would often fix the problem -- and of course, the banamine didn't hurt!
We chose the vet school option, because our horse is 40-50 miles from the vet school, and we decided to go ahead and take him and hope the trailer ride would fix it. If not, at least we would be in the right place.
When we got there, the gut was back in place, ut the spleen was enlarged, so they kept him to treat him for that. I assume (will question the vet more later) that the spleen was enlarged due to the stress of the colic.
Sigh...I am tired and I have to get ready for Grayson's band concert tonight. I thank you all foryou good thought, prayers and messages. It felt good to know that folks were thinking of us. When I found myself a little overwrought thinking about what could go wrong, I reminded myself that you all were sending up those good vibes; that was very comforting. Thank you!
And Kerry, thank you for calling too! It does help to know we are not alone!

I am glad he is doing better too!!!! Isn't that the scariest feeling in the whole world? Especially when the vet says stuff like, well time will tell. I want to know now all will be okay. Horses make me almost as crazy as my kids do. Get a good nights rest, all will be fine.

Nephro-splenic entrapment?
When Dulcinea was having her problems, that is one of the things we thought could be wrong. It wasn't, but I think I'll always remember that condition because it sounded so scary.
I think that the spleen was probably enlarged because of the weight of the intestine loop hanging on it and irritating it. That will just take a bit of time for the inflamation/irritation to go away.
I'm glad Mack is going to feel better.

Jeany and Tony sending good luck your way with Mack. The NC State Vet School can do amazing things with horses under the weather. I hope he is feeling better real soon.

That's exactly the condition he had! When she explained the condition to us, I thought of Spanky and the lypomas that killed him. It is scary when their insides start changing positions!
The vet said she was amazed at how much better he is doing and let him go home. He is on his way to the barn now. He has to have bran mashes tonight and tomorrow and that is it. He will love that, because he loves to eat!
One thing that the vet mentioned to us was that TWH's are very stoic animals and that just not looking like himself was enough to conclude he was in pain. We have been running through scenarios all day of what was the best thing to do, and we keep coming back to: We are glad that we took him to the vet school this morning.
Thank you all for your thoughts and prayers.
