I'm writing to ask for your prayers and healing thoughts for a colt belonging to one of my clients, by El Rubio. He was born this spring. They came home from work to find him with an eight inch gash in his flank area. Vet is on his way. Please pray that he comes out of this ok...he is their golden boy. They are so proud of this colt.
Here is Majico:

Sorry for your friends, Carol. If it is in his flank and just the muscle is involed, he will most likey heal up fine with maybe only a scar. Wishing the best.

Agree with Cindy. You can bet he'll be in my prayers...he's a PRETTY BOY!!!
Let us know how he does.
Buddy had a deep hole (remember?) over his ribs this spring, it has healed fine. Only a little wound left. He's almost ready for a cinch again. (now we're where we were in May !!!!).

Sending prayers for that beautiful golden boy. Do they know how it happened or what he got into? Those little darlings are always getting into trouble.

At last call, the colt had been sedated and stitched up with a drain put in to drain off fluids, and shot full of antibiotics and tetanus antitoxin. He's going to have a little trouble nursing they said, because of the drugs making him groggy but he is weanable so shouldn't have any trouble eating hay and grain. God bless the little guy...he is so beautiful.
His owner will be reading this thread in the morning and I KNOW that your prayers and good wishes are appreciated.

My vet has pictures of a horse that stepped on the end of a 5' stick with it's back foot. That raised the stick (a lot like stepping on a rake) and it pierced the horse through the groin and came out it's rear. The accident happened up on the mountain above Tooele. I guess they had a heck of a time getting the horse down without further injury.
The pictures were gruesome. But they removed the stick, it hadn't pierced anything major, and sewed him up...he was fine.
The only caution I'd have is to watch the drain and make sure it keeps draining for about a week. Then watch at 7-10 days any dead skin sloughs off and you can loose some stitches. But, it usually does fine. A little wound coat to keep the flies out and he should be fine.
Good luck!!!!

Prayer for the pretty boy (and his worried owners).
It is so heartbreaking to see a young on get hurt, especially when you have such high hope & dreams for them.
I bet he'll heal just fine, they are very resiliant.

Such a beautiful colt! I agree with the others - he should heal up just fine, even though it can look terrible when it happens and through the healing process. Healing thoughts sent their way.

The youngsters do heal up fast! I remember Spirit's scrotum episode. All he has to show for it now is a lightning shaped scar between his rear legs.

This is from Faye this morning:
"What a blessing to have so many people praying for our boy. I've enclosed some pics, but I must warn you,
they are graphic & scary. He was doing okay at 6AM, no limping, moving fine. We did surmise that he was
probably running & kicking without a care in the world & he hit the goose neck on the trailer with his hip.
Vet said we could start hyro therapy in two & three days. But as Carol U mentioned on the forum, he said
to keep drain hole open. Well he won't die from this (he may try something else later to do that) & ofcourse
that & him not in a lot of pain is the main thing. He will always be beautiful to me, even with a scar. I do think
I actually love him more now if that's possible.
Thank you for all the thoughts & prayers & any advice will be appreciated. I'll keep you updated.
Love to all,
Faye "
I will again warn...the pics are very graphic, but I want you to see the marvelous job her vet did on sewing up this little guy...I'm betting it will be barely noticeable when he's an adult...

The colt sedated and wound cleaned and flushed...

Close up of wound...the lower half is the flap of skin hanging down...

And after the vet had stitched up both inside and out...

yup, appears to be shaped like a trailer hitch. I am sure that he will be back to normal before you know it.
He will have to make up some sort of cool story about his scar to tell his pasturemates!

Good Grief... I would have had a heart attack if he were mine... she did a nice clean up job... Prayers to him and you. Keep up the antibiotics til they are all gone... I'd stall him for a while til you know you have any potential infection under control... adding a little red cell or extra B12 wouldn't hurt either... one shot... enough to help but not hyper...
He'll probably heal up and be fine while you'll still be worrying about him...!!!

OMG, Poor baby! But I feel even worse for his owners. I think I would have had a complete freak attack break down if that had been my foal! They did do an excellent job sewing him up though.

It's not easy raising babies, they always find ways to hurt themselves.
Be prepared it will most likely look really bad in a day or so, when the swelling hits.
I do believe he'll heal, and thing what a great start he'll have on tolerating the unpleasantness of life. After this ear clipping should be a breeze

Oh the poor thing! That looks VERY painful!!! What a fantastic stitch job though! But I bet it will be hard to keep stitched in that area.

GAH-ah-AH-ah!
Thank heavens you stated the lower part was the skin flap hanging down. I first looked at it and was aghast at the huge hole! Still pretty bad, even with the hole only being half the size I first thought...but Oooooh! Yikers! ...for the poor boy.

HE is a very lucky colt indeed....could have easily broke through to the abdominal chamber...YIKES!
Looks terrible...but will heal "beautiful". A year from now it will be hard to see that scar. The one thing you must do is watch him for infection..take his temp every day. I would bet they will want that colt to move "some"...to keep the area from pulling a lot.
GREAT stitch job...wait and see...it will heal real nice.
Can I ask what that procedure cost you? Here is would easily be $400 plus.....

Wow, That poor baby! Bless his heart. I do agree, in six months to a year, you won't hardly notice that scar! Vet did a really nice job!
As everyone said, just watch for infection but he should heal up pretty good!

Man, that is a nasty wound. Beautiful stitch job, tho. If they can keep it from getting infected and popping stitches, bet it will be hardly noticable.

I agree with Terry...it won't even take a year...you'll be surprised what he looks like two months from now.
Great job with the stitches..just warn them, in 7-10 days it will look awful, and then it will heal, heal, heal.

EWWWWWW - pooorrr baaabbbyyy!!! That is TERRIBLE!!! He is soo cute!! They are accidents waiting to happen. I've heard so many horror stories about babies and almost lost two of ours and did lose one because they ate a trot line, steel leaders and all (it had been buried 40 years and they dug it up) so we know the horror of finding your beloved colt so severely injured. It is absolutely devastating. But we saw a QH who totally scalped himself from between his eyes waaay back behind his ears and there is no visible scar. I bet he heals just fine and at the most has a thin black line and that will be invisible with a little winter coat. It is amazing how well they will heal from major cuts even with gaping holes. Please keep us posted on his progress!!!

Want you all to know...Faye called me tonight so appreciative of all of your support for little Majico. She couldn't believe how you all offered prayers, hope and suggestions...and she said, "They don't even know me from Adam."
I said we're all horse lovers, all Paso lovers...and all baby lovers...and all just one big family.
He is doing so well...they are taking his temperature regularly and it is normal. He is doing everything he should be doing, including nursing, and doesn't even limp. The drain is still draining although not a lot. She is getting more antibiotics tomorrow.
So thanks, you guys...from the bottom of my heart, and from Faye and Raymond. It means so much! And I'll keep you posted on his recovery!

They think he was kicking and bucking and hit the gooseneck on the trailer.... :(
He sure is handsome!! He will heal fine, I am sure. I have seen a horse have a similar hole but in his chest, and you would not know today that he did anything. Just a slight line, and he had to have a drain too. It is amazing how quick they heal from the inside out. Yes, keep us up to date with his progress.

Terry I bet that would be more then $400 here..I had worse before I bet he will be fine..my mare went to a show 4 weeks after her accident...3 weeks of that time she spent tied to a wall not being allowed to lay down..

From Faye this morning:
"He is doing great! He took his antibiotics this morn without a problem, his appetite is good,&
he is moving fine. The wound is draining good & there has been little (if any) swelling. He is
being so wonderful about all this activity & stuff. He does not get anxious or worried, he just
calmly accepts what has to be done. Sounds funny, but he almost acts like he knows we're
trying to help. My heart is so full of love for this beautiful little guy & he is only endearing
himself more to me every day.
Thanks for being my "go between" with everyone on the forum. They have been such a help
to us getting through this & keeping our thoughts positive with all their experiences & knowledge.
But above everything else, the prayers. When ya' know all those prayers are going up, that's
when ya' realize, whatever happens, it will all be okay.
Our thanks & love to all,
Faye"

Phew... just read this whole thread and am very relieved to see it seems to have a happy ending!
Poor boy... it did look nasty and poor humans for having such a scare. best of luck for a full and beautiful recovery.
I understand what she means about the sweetness of the colt about treatments. I had a filly several years ago that needed a small surgery and lots of meds and she was such an understanding and tolerant angel about the whole thing it just filled me with gratitude and love for her sweet self. (she is fine today, btw).
