As a former Virginian I can tell you all with great authority that MD is NORTH of the Mason Dixon line and full of those blue coated devils!! As a current South Carolinian and FL resident I can also tell you authoritatively that Florida is definitely BEYOND the Mason Dixon line and NOT in the South. It's like pulling my last tooth to get a glass of sweet tea down here and free refills??? HAH. They sure haven't heard of that here in FL either. But we are working on converting them to at least some of our more gentrified customs while we're down here in NEVER NEVER LAND (NEVER NEVER has FL been part of the SOUTH) And how do I know this??? Because My darn yankee grandparents and godparents born and raised in Noo Yawk and Pennsillvanea lived there during their golden years along with all their friends and golfing buddies. You can only find a real southerner in Florida at places like the Neon Cowboy which is a real place on Bellamy Brothers Blvd (real street too). They're scarcer than sweet fresh brewed tea at South Beach! ;-) ;-)

The PA/MD border is the Mason Dixon line so that makes us Marylanders Southern.

motorgypsy
08-26-2007, 10:43 AM
NEVER will TRUE SOUTHERNERS accept Marylanders as SOUTHERN. They wore the WRONG COLOR in the WAR BETWEEN THE STATES (You know - the one the yankees call the CIVIL war - although it beats me how any war can be called civil????)

I got so curious I actually looked up the Confederate states of America and here they are for the rest of you info junkies

Seceding states

South Carolina
Mississippi
Florida
Alabama
Georgia
Louisiana
Texas
Virginia
Arkansas
North Carolina
Tennessee

Seven states seceded by February 1861:

* South Carolina (December 20, 1860),[8]
* Mississippi (January 9, 1861),[9]
* Florida (January 10, 1861),[10]
* Alabama (January 11, 1861),[11]
* Georgia (January 19, 1861),[12]
* Louisiana (January 26, 1861),[13]
* Texas (February 1, 1861).[14]

After Lincoln called for troops, four more states seceded:

* Virginia (April 17, 1861);[15] there was also a rump Union government of Virginia[16]
* Arkansas (May 6, 1861),[17]
* North Carolina (May 20, 1861)[18]
* Tennessee (June 8, 1861).[19][20]

Two more states had rival (or rump) governments. The Confederacy admitted them but they never controlled these states and the pro-Confederate state governments were soon in exile:

* Missouri did not secede but a rump group proclaimed secession (October 31, 1861).[21][22]
* Kentucky did not secede but a rump, unelected group proclaimed secession (November 20, 1861).[23][24]

Both states allowed slavery and both had strong Unionist and Confederate counties, including some Unionist slave-owners. The legalities of the matter remain in dispute to the present day.

You will notice that it was our home state who fired the first shot that started the war. Guess they ran out of other fun and games that winter. Hunting must have been poor and they had plenty of spare ammo.

1) Carol you are worried about BANGOS?? I am still wondering where this comes in:
I was just hoping for cleaver and entertaining from Mel.

Is Mel supposed to go after that darn Lucky Charms elf with a a meat cleaver????
----------------------------------------------------------------------
2) the Mason Dixon Line was set up MANY years previous to the War .Before it was set up criminals from both states would claim they were 'across the state line' to elude capture.The town of Hanover ( where the Codorus ride was) was once known as 'Rogue's Roost" for this reason..no one knew what state it was in!!
---------------------------------------------------------------------

As someone who lives in southern PA I can attest to the fact that in the years (many years.. like 142?) since the War Between the States, PA ..at least where I grew up and now live- has been trying to turn Southern..Gettysburg is full of Southern born transplants now, many selling to tourist. many just wanted to come and live there..I have heard this area referred to as Pensyl-Tucky by more than a few people (most in the race horse business) although I often wondered if that was in reference to the horse industry or saying we were full of hillbillies??Plus I had people ask me many times what part of the south I was from when speaking to me as I supposedly had an accent..I dont hear it..Maybe just because until here all the farms I worked on were run by and staffed by people who had definite accent..Texas/LA, KY mainly.And now we are being taken over by Maryland transplants who come up , build 400,000 homes and complain because they have to smell manure or worse yet get stuck behind a tractor on their way to one of the 3 Wal Marts within a 20 min drive of them..

If one does not read "A Land Remembered"one should realize the South shal rise again and yes the Southern most USA is in Florida True parts of Florida are like Las Vegas/ a temple for industrialists & capitalisitics transplants visiting but being monitored by the wisest of wise & alligators are watching (gators out number humans* here in Florida)( * disclaimer:although lawyers out number the rest of the reptiles)& is the souths way of recovering what the carpet baggers thought they got away with.Bottom feeders beware ;The land & sea shall cleanse and humble the developers periodically.Marsh Tackies= Florida Cracker Horses =Spanish Colonial Mustangs= Paso Finos..... And the strongest (horses)survive.

motorgypsy
08-26-2007, 10:48 PM
The south has already rizz Ed and unfortunately so have the property taxes in the south and the number of developers.

I vote for the survival of the fittest horses. Our Cracker would lead the rest of the herd to water and food if we were unable to get them. I've watched him take the handle of the faucet to turn on the hose and repeatedly turn it until it's on fully. You'd better watch out too because he'll pick up the hose and squirt you with it! He taught the rest of them to graze on duckweed in our pond. It's a very funny sight to see five horses belly deep in a pond grazing on the floating weed. We have a several paso finos who come close in brains but in survival skills he is without peer.

I'd like to see the opening of most of the major horse registries to feral horses who meet the breed criteria closely enough so they don't change the breed by adding them to the gene pool. They are such amazing animals. Unfortunately living in an environment where they are waited on by people makes horses less intelligent in most cases it seems.

I have always thought that the Mason Dixon line was the state line between Maryland and Virginia/West Virginia.

I do know that Florida has always been the retirement state for folks from the north that could no longer tolerate the cold.

And I know that SC and NC were called Carolina before the civil war. They were not separate

South Carolina wanted to separate from the union and North Carolina didn't. That war was after the civil war.

Oh Appy, sorry about your marshmellows.
