I have heard of this oddity before, but none of my mule owning friends believed me. Now finally DNA proof

Although after Appydays experience I'm not sure how good DNA really is

That is so interesting!! It would seem to me that statistically the two DNA's could line up correctly so the mule would be able to reproduce and now that it has happened a test should be able to be developed to identify mules who are not sterile.
