View Full Version : Ten days to go ... and not worried yet.

Yep ... in ten days David and I are going to make ourselves official. We're gonna get hitched. (Is twelve and a half years of courtship long enough? *grin*)
Party will be at Janda (our ranch). About 150 folks will be showing up for a two day event. We've invited them to bring their RV's because this could get raunchy and we don't want them driving afterwards.
Marriage at 4:30 Saturday, Sept 8. Then we'll have dinner: Janda Highland beef and Janda lamb all cooked on two 6' long charcoal barbecues with spits. The kegs of beer will be bought, but the 180 bottles of wine are Janda vintage.
After dinner there will be dancing in the machine shed. David built a dance floor and has built square hay bales into benches (complete with backs!) along the outside edges so people can sit ... and we'll have three big bonfires going out on the lawn (marshmallows anyone?).
Then Sunday morning we'll get up and make breakfast for everybody. Scrambled eggs and Janda beef sausage with toast and coffee. Then we hope folks will hang around for the day and play horse shoes, bocce or croquet ... or sit around on their lawn chairs and finish off the beer and wine!
Still have to catch the lambs to take to the processors. Still have to get the wine from the carboys into the bottles. Still have to wrap 200 potatoes ... shuck 200 cobs of corn ... make 14 kb of baked beans ... and salads ...
... and I'm not panicking yet. What's wrong with me?

Now listen here, Carol Nelson and Erin! Don't you go making any idle threats! This is NOT a formal affair. The caterers don't care about how many plates (though my almost-cousin-in-law who is helping me cater this myself is having a heart attack already) so ... saddle up, girlies. You're invited!

OK map quest ;-)
you are so sweet, I think it was like a 12 hr drive last time I looked!

08-29-2007, 05:48 PM
Oh, Terri ... I'm not worried about the WEDDING. It's just that I'm the caterer ... and the lawnskeeper ... and the vintner ... and the chauffeur to and from the airport (a good hour away) ... and the music coordinator ...
Should I be sweating yet?

Erin ... 12 hours = one long day's driving or two short ones. Easy schmeasy! Which day will you be arriving on?

PS ... the bride will NOT be doing the big a$$ dress thing. She will be in PANTS (actually, a pant suit that's very close to the colour of my hair) ... with a very cool light teal coloured lace cowboy shirt with faux-suede collar, yoke and cuffs! (When it's as girlie as that do you maybe call it a "cowGIRL shirt"?)
The groom will wear light brown jeans and a darker teal cowboy shirt.
Then when it's time to work the food line or sit around a bonfire, neither of us has to go in and change clothes.

So, I take it that none of the pm rumors I'm hearing are true?
1. Felix is providing entertainment
2. Felix is giving the bride away
3. Felix is performing the ceremony
4. Felix is decorating the get away car
Clarification would be appreciated. ;-)

Speaking of honeymoon ... we're not doing that one in any "normal" way either. (Mind you, after 12.5 years, who needs a honeymoon?)
Anyway, our "honeymoon" (if you will) is going to be two weeks in Puerto Rico come this winter.
And we're taking ALL the kids with us. (That's 6 of 'em ... well, 5 of our kids and 1 "significant other".)
The only question is: when? The Dulce Sueno Fair is not until the first week in March. I'd rather go earlier ... but I'm having a devil of a time finding out about one in Manati on the first weekend of February (much better -- colder here at that time).
Can anybody here help me with that? So far I'm not having any luck talking to people at Manati. I don't think anyone there speaks English, I don't remember Spanish ... and none of us at either end of the phone do French!

Tips for a confortable wear:
Climate
The climate is Tropical Marine with regular temperature of 80°F (26°C). Puerto Rico enjoys warm and sunny days most of the year. Lightweight clothing is appropriate year-round.

Jane....I want to wish you a happy wedding. It sounds like its going to be LOADS of fun....I def want pics. The last one I saw was the "we don't need no stinkin bra (cuz we ride Pasos)", if I remember correctly.
Now I can't wait for these pics!!!
I think that is so cool that your making it into a weekend-long celebration. My close friend Steph is getting married on the same day (the 8th) in New Hampshire, and we're all staying up there for the weekend...I'm so excited! So, I'll be partying right "along side" ya that day! :D I'll think of you!
I was with a guy for 8 yrs...and I called it quits for good in the beginning of this summer. He went to rehab twice, and fell off the wagon for the last time.....I packed my things, and never looked back. I was so dissappointed that, at 28 yrs old, I had to think about starting over with someone. I always thought that, in order to get married, you had to be with someone for a looong time to know if it was right. Instead, I learned early on in the relationship you DO know if it is right......because, looking back at my relationship with this person, there were red flags from the beginning that I chose to ignore.
Now, I don't think I'll wait so long.......
I don't mean anything against you, I'm just relating to your story...it got me thinking. ;-)
I think its great that you found your match and yer gettin' hitched in about a week! ;-)

Finding the right partner in life is one of the greatest gifts anyone can be given.
Yes, it is ... and I have found mine. The only regret I have is that I didn't find him much earlier in my life. We are so similar that we very rarely argue about anything, and, as many of you know, I've had my medical challenges over the last 12 years and he's been there supporting me without complaint.
I could have complained bitterly about the fact that his cooking skills are limited to FRYING EVERYTHING, but really ... why would I? He cooked every day for months. (Fried beets, anyone? No? How about fried cabbage? Fried WEINERS? *sigh* *eyes rolling*) He sat by my side in the hospital, being my own personal nurse, for 5 solid weeks when my hips were done. He encourages me in everything I want to do, never complaining, even if it inconveniences him. And if I don't feel like working (to earn some money), he doesn't care about that either because he is so pleased that I can now DO things other than sit at a computer working. He is magnificent.

I made a conscious decision to wear a pant suit for this wedding so that I would not have to change for everything after the ceremony ... but this afternoon, I tell you, I found (by accident) the MOST BEAUTIFUL outfit! A floor length taffeta (I think) skirt that is hip hugging, then leg hugging with a flare at the bottom... a sleeveless shell to match and then the most glorious jacket with WIDE ruffle collar. It's very old fashioned looking ... dark brown ... FABULOUS ...
and $600. *sigh*
I REFUSE to spend that kind of money on a dress I'll wear once and then maybe once again sometime over the next 5 years. For that kind of money, I'd rather have a new saddle!
But, man, was that a gorgeous dress. I'm still drooling.

time is drawing near, how you holding up?
Jane Hurl
09-03-2007, 03:33 PM
How nice that I've remained in your thoughts, Erin. Thank you! I am holding up really well, I think ... other than the tick I've developed in my right eye. *lol*
The machine shed has been de-cob-webbed, the sand has been leveled, the dance floor has been made and the walls are loaded up with mini-lights. Still have mini-lights to get up in the rafters but that's pretty high so I'm not going up there. Hay bales have been installed all along the walls ... two deep and then one up the back so they look like one 80 foot long chesterfield on either side of the machine shed. (Looks pretty cool.)
The lawn has been manicured, solar mini-light stars have been installed in a number of trees. Waiting now on two more fire pit rings to arrive. Neighbour has kindly offered to arrange for all the burning material for the pits.
Picnic tables have been installed hither and yon.
About half the dinner tables and chairs have been mooched.
We're still looking for more tables. May have them at the other farm.
Still have to shop for all the non-meat foods, but will do that on Thursday.
Will get plates etc at the same time.
Music has been selected.
Minister will be here Friday for a rehearsal.
6 foot long barbecue with rotisserie and hood is being built as we speak.
Vows are only half written. (This is a tough task!)
First set of guests will arrive from the coast on Tuesday.
A whole whack more will arrive Friday.
The horde will arrive Saturday morning or early afternoon.
The only thing we've forgotten (that I've remembered to this point) is a ring for David! *LOL* I remembered that on Saturday, but it's a long weekend up here, so he has to wait 'til Tuesday. We'll get one on our way to wrangle the lambs and take two to the butcher. *giggle. snort.*
So ... can you think of anything I've forgotten? I'll take all the help I can get at this point! *grin*

By all means put them to work. They can loaf after the wedding!!!
You need to get someone to follow you guys around for the last few days with a video camera so we can all get a real FEEL for the preparations and the festivities. It sounds like sooo much fun!!!
Now IF you have a little spare time and have thrift stores or Goodwill stores where you live THIS is where you find the gowns to die for. I have in my closet the most totally GORGEOUS RED TAFFETA floor length ball gown with ruffled over the shoulder straps, a gorgeous matching slip - PERFECT for riding in a parade on a paso fino, that I found at the Goodwill about 4 years ago. Unfortunately it's about a size 2. I'm going to remove the zipper and put in a set of loops with a draw string on the back and sheer red fabric under it BUT of course I haven't gotten around TO IT yet.
Maybe I can get Leila to fix it for me. She is such a dynamo and so talented!!!!
So MAYBE you could find an antique skirt and top - maybe a ladies riding outfit from the 1800's - that would be perfect!!!! Check ebay. There's always overnight mail!!!! I do like what you've planned though.
And I'm sure you will look so radiant at your wedding that your outfit will be totally insignificant by comparison. It's just fun to shop for clothing and find a bargain that is really different and just what you're in the mood to wear regardless of who else notices it!! ;-) ;-)

What I really want to wear, MG, is the dark brown dress I found for $600 the other day. It has the neatest old fashioned feel to it. But I refuse to spend $600 on a dress that I will have very little opportunity to wear again (if any at all). But I have to tell you, my marvelous man said, "Well, hopefully this is the last time you'll get married. If that is the dress you want, you go get it." He's the greatest.

OK guys - how about a "chip in fund" for Jane's wedding outfit!!! I"ll be glad to send a donation!!
One other thought - go to the manager with your story and see if he'll discount it. Things are tough everywhere and you never know if you don't ask!!

09-04-2007, 01:51 PM
*laughing at MG*
The problem is not the money, it's that I'm too cheap to buy a dress for $600 and only wear it once. (It's not like this is the first time I've done this, y'know.) It is stunningly beautiful, but oh, so impractical. I honestly can't think of ONE other occasion where I might wear it. Besides, it's too close to wedding day to get the alterations done now.
As to the store owner discounting the dress: I know that things are tough everywhere else in North America, but believe me, they are NOT tough in Alberta. Here wages are through the roof and companies STILL cannot find enough employees. Due to the oil, this province is booming like never before.
But you're sweet, MG. And thoughtful. I will be fine in the outfit I chose. It's kind of funky with my light teal LACE cowgirl shirt! And it's more practical for sitting around bonfires ... and I'll get lots of wear out of it afterwards.
(Gotta get priorities right: for $600, I'd rather have a new saddle! *grin*)
