View Full Version : roping from pasos?

There's been some debate about whether a podunk paso could rope and hold a cow.
Here's an excerpt from another site that basically describes the same scene. Taken out of a book written by a woman about her experiences along the Mexico/Arizona area. Her grandfather homesteaded in the 1880's and she took over ranch duties in the 1930's.
The Spanish horses thrived in the desert and were the horses of the day... They had speed, stamina, and intelligence, and, strange as it may seem, they had feelings.. .And so the Spanish horses were made for the country and were much like the country itself, rugged and beautiful... It was amusing to see an 800-pound horse under a 200-pound man with an enormous saddle and a 1000-pound bull at the end of the rope. (Wilbur-Cruce 1987)
Here's the link to see the cowhorse for yourself. Size and shape look awful familiar.

"Rope" and hold a cow?....heck...I've seen footage of them grabbing what looked to be Brahma cattle BY THE NECK..and wrangling them around while the cow bawled!
If that doesn't show a Paso has "cow"..I don't know what does! ;-)
I can confirm you can rope a horse and hold it with another Paso...we do that here..as well as pony a horse from a Paso...
Candice....watch the very end of "Whats My Gait"...that is where the scene is of the Paso grabbing cattle with his teeth...

I never doubted it, never. Some have though...
It was the little cow ponies that tamed the west.
Oh, I've got horses bred from champion fino horses with plenty of "cow". Remember "fino" isn't just about the gait; it's about the horse.

See Candice....them thar Paser feeners are so smart that a cowboy DON'T NEED no stupid ROPE!!!!
You just point the Paso at the cow you want and the horse runs up and grabs it by the top of the neck and places said cow where ever you want it! :D
Some of the most awesome footage I ever saw! I'm sure the cattle did NOT think so......

Enter the "TB LEGEND"....Three Bars!
Talk about "cow"...Andalusians have lots of "cow"...and we all know Andys are part of the foundation stock of the Paso Fino...

Paso's and the Colonial Spanish horse all go back to the same animals the spanish brought over. I just bought a Colonial Spanish and her half brother gaits like a paso. It looks like she gaits also.
I will try to post pixs of her after I can get some. I just got her home on Wed and the few I have are not that good.

That's very interesting Lynn. How did you discover the Spanish Colonial horse? I found some information about the mustangs in Utah that reminded me very much of some old phenotype pasos hardly seen anymore from the curved ears, to the grulla coat color and even described the conformation. Those genetics are a great find.
I found out about them from the american livestock breeds conservancy. I am in the process of planning my farm. I liked a few of the different animals from the list and decided I wanted to keep all of my animals on the farm heritage breeds. I did a little research and went to the HOA get together. There are several different strains due to isolation in different areas of the country.
This is the 1 1/2 yr old I just brought home Wed.

I remember watching a National Geographic special where they rounded up and drew blood for DNA on a group of mustangs in New Mexico. They found them, because of isolation, to have pure Spanish blood. I believe the Spanish Barb breed here in the U.S., is likewise taken from the mustangs of pure blood. The Kiegers in Oregon and the Sulfur herd here on the Utah/Nevada border have likewise been tested and found pure. I'm sure there are some others too.
There was a Spanish Barb stallion at the Arizona Horse Festival. You would have loved him, just beautiful.
I like the idea of a Spanish Colonial Horse. Probably a little more controlled breeding then the various mustangs.

If you want a copy of "What's My Gait" and the "bull dogging Paso Fino"
Send me a PM with your address.
I have made copies for a number of folks
for $10.00 to cover the cost of a new tape and postage
I may be able to put it on DVD don't know for sure.

When I saw this thread it reminded me of our local allbreed association and a team penning competition they held that I went to a year or so ago. Most of the competition was pretty much a comedy of errors except for one tiny paso fino mare ridden by this very chunky rider who literally overflowed his saddle. She was a regular whirling dervish. There were the usually number of riders and horses on the team. They all stood around while the lone paso fino and her overflow rider separated and penned every one of the cows. I've never been so impressed or so proud of our breed.
As far as Heritage Breeds - please look at the Florida Cracker. They are genetically extremely close to the paso fino but with all the hardiness of a long time feral breed. They are very spanish looking, gaited, very cowy, extremely smart and amazingly hardy.

In Chile they use their little criollos to pin cattle against a fence and hold them until the wrangler can get a hold of them.
