Here is Echo's Caramelo de Bravo, AKA "Nugget". Baby>yearling>3-year old. He's such a doll! He's such a gentle colt that anyone could ride him, even now at 3-years old.

Well...ok, everyone probably gets sick of seeing and hearing about my Bunny, my pure Puerto Rican Palomino mare, but here goes again!... ;-) :D

I need to get better photos of her now, especially since we have her under saddle, but perhaps I'll wait til she sheds out a bit. With weather near 80 degrees today, they're all shedding a few winter hairs!
Oh by the way, Bunny measures out at 14.3 H. She's a good, tall, stout girl! :D

Camilla...I am EXTREMELY interested in seeing what your mare delivers from this chestnut stallion. My Bunny is much the same color as your mare, and I bought her specifically to breed to Rojo Tejas, my stallion, for the purposes of getting a Golden Palomino.
Good luck! I'm sure whatever color it is, it will be beautiful. So what are the color choices for a foal from this type of union?
Camilla
02-22-2006, 01:57 PM
Hi all,
To Lori, the stallion has a name I will probably misspell (I think I just misspelled misspell  ) something like Geretsky de Santillana. Owned by Andre Mejia (it was up here in Canada for a while last summer).
To Carol, He was a nice deep chestnut, less flame red like your lovely boy... more brown shade I think. If I understand colour stuff right, the foal has a 50% chance of chestnut and a 50% chance of palomino... I 'll let you know how it comes out in June.
Is your girl bred did you say? (can't remember now) if so to who and for when?
The owner of my mare's full sister, Solana de Herencia in Michigan, bred her to our own stallion, Mercenario - a mahogany bay. this is fun because Solana is so similar to our Finola (including identical colour) and we'll get to see an idea of what they produce. Mercenario's dam is listed as chestnut (though he has never produced one so i hope listing is correct) so in theory i think that foal has:
25% chance bay
25% chance buckskin
25% chance chestnut
25% chance palomino.
of course i am missing the whole brown, black, grulla thing... not sure how that figures. When bred to a light buckskin, Mercy produced a brown... so who knows. here's what she looks like at 2 and 2.5...

Aw...what a sweet face! She's a doll!
No, my Bunny is open...I have two options if I am going to breed her this spring (I'll tell you, this drought is making me second guess if I'm going to breed at all this year). I like Barb Priess's Corito de Vez for a Pure Puerto Rican (hopefully Palomino...probably Isabella) foal. And of course, my Redman. I would love to produce something the same color as the mare, Coleta, pictured above.
Linda Y
02-23-2006, 12:26 AM
Carol, isn't Corito a palomino? If so, if you breed to him you have pretty close to a 100% chance of a cremello.
motorgypsy
02-23-2006, 02:04 AM
palomino to palomino
25% chance of red (chestnut)
50% chance of palomino
25% chance of cremello
Linda Y
02-23-2006, 02:24 AM
You are absolutely right! Just personal observance here...every pal. to pal. crossing I ever witnessed had cremello babies.
Now cremello to red is a 100% guaranteed palomino. Wish I could breed Casi. She is perlino...could throw buckskin.
Carol Nelson
02-23-2006, 04:39 AM
Thanks MG's ...I was wondering what that percentage was.
Linda, correct cremello to red produces Palomino...BUT I was told by someone very knowledgable on this board that that would highly likely produce the Isabella Palomino, where I am trying to produce the Golden Palomino.
If I breed Bunny to Corito, yes, chances are it would be a light Palomino, but that would probably be a situation offering her belly for lease. Not only would it be Palomino but it would be Pure Puerto Rican.
Hi Camilla,
SQUEAL OF HAPPINESS, I need a emocon for that :jumpy
She looks marvelous! I do miss her pretty yellow face. Picaboo is in foal to Mandato de La Luisa, due in April. Please do share about her foal (and Solana's). I will be very interested to see what she produces as well. Thank you so much for sharing!!! Please keep the snow up there, however. We don't want anymore winter down here 8-) .

03-03-2006, 12:34 PM
Carol...its NOT likely you will get an Isabella.... believe me, I have done the same color cross you have, and got an Isabella two times out of probably 12 "goldens"... Those two Isabellas came one from each mare, those mares were full sisters. They were the palominos. The stallion was a sorrel...as chestnut as Red. No flax in his mane either.
The horse posted would be considered "chocolate, or sooty" palomino.
Corito to Bunny = 25% chance of cremello.

I had thought she was going to sell him, she needs to. Now she says she's going to keep him because she likes his playful personality. He's got so much brio, he'll be uncontrollable soon. I wish she would sell him.

Well...ok, everyone probably gets sick of seeing and hearing about my Bunny, my pure Puerto Rican Palomino mare, but here goes again!... ;-) :D
Here she is at two or three...don't know which it is:
http://gallery.pethobbyist.com/data/36931Bunny.jpg
Hey Carol,
Bunny is sporting my favorite color: dark, dappled palomino.
In the late 1970's, I owned a stallion that looked just like Bunny.
His name was Atila.
Ernie Sanz' father imported him from Puerto Rico and he told me Atila had produced a substantial amount of get in PR, including 3 fino champions.
Any relation to Bunny by chance?
http://www.pasoregistry.com/db/Tree.asp?ID=69544
BTW, I have photos of him (with a much younger Cousin Helen aboard), if you wish to see them. They just need to be scanned in to the computer.

People please correct me if I'm wrong.
But, wouldn't this be considered a chocolate Palomino?
It's my understanding that Palomino's have white mane and tails.
While flaxen chestnuts have varied light strands, but not completely white.
.
Carol Nelson
08-18-2006, 04:34 PM
Unfortunately, Helen, Bunny did not keep that dark color (either that or it was a retouched photo...) because now she is pretty much a dappled Isabella...but that's ok, cause her confo is pretty nice anyway. I'm really hoping for a Golden out of her and Red. She is not bred, by the way...she is open...and I will lease her belly to a PPR stallion only, this year only. Because of the drought, I can't afford to breed any babies I may end up keeping.
Here's her pedigree from pasoregistry.com:
http://pasoregistry.com/db/Profile.asp?ID=101848
(for those who don't know, if you click on the photo box, you'll get the pedigree...for some reason it wouldn't work any other way this morning).
They share some common ancestry way back, in Batalla, Dulce Sueno, Noche Bueno...but that's pretty common of a lot of horses in this country.
Somewhere someone once posted a pic of this Senor Modo del El Cid...can anyone come up with one?? Wasn't he Palomino??? In fact, any information on any horses in these two pedigrees would be appreciated! :D
Bunny's registered name again is Conejo Rosado (yes, I know, pink rabbit) ;-)

Mine was from a friend's horse...his name was "Frisky" and he was a golden palomino..QH. I used to put my nose on his side to see if he smelled differnt than my bay.... I loved his golden, glowing color...
My second palomino encounter was everyday walikng to school and stopping by the pen of an American saddlebred named "Golden Belvedere" they called him "Banner" and I brought him all the grass I could pick...every day on my way to school...I dreamed of saving my lunch money to buy him one day...but around noon, all that thought went to my stomach instead!
Funny how you remember the horses that made an impression on you!

My first Palomino was an old Grade school horse, named Dorado. We got him for free, he had scars all over from being tangled in barbed wire at some point in his life, but was an AWESOME horse! You could do anything with him.....we rode, jumped, raced, walked under him, hung on him, tied him out w/tires to drag around as he grazed (before we had fencing up).....you name it, we did it!
I have a picture somewhere, should dig it up and scan it!

My first horse was a 'pumpkin skin palomino'. What they now call champagne. She was a simply gorgeous color. I tried and tried to breed her, but apparently she was sterile. Missy was half TWH and half QH, 16.2 hands and I loved her dearly.
My second palomino was a Paso, Novia Ensenada, who was about the same color as Carol's Bunny. She is the dam of my perlino, Casi. I haven't had another one, but sure wouldn't mind!

Oh yes, dear ol Nugget! He was an orphan and was raised by hand. Needless to say, he was REAL people savy and could get into just about anything there was to get into. I used to share P & J sandwiches with him. He would eat whatever I ate most of the time.
I used to run barrels on him, just for fun. What a character.
I have always had a soft spot for Palo's also!

I always thought they were so beautiful but when I first met pasos it was at an all paso barn and when I walked through there was a colt.He looked white with some rusty color thrown in at spots. He wasn't really pretty but I fell in love and was told he was a palomino. My ex would not let me get one but rain, sleet, snow, ice,or sun I went to his stall and spent hours with him for two years. He turned a beautiful golden and the change was amazing. The owner didn't feel women should own stallions so when he sold him cheap later he didn't even call me.Samson was bottle fed and sweet.I got to be the first ever on his back.Samson and Rosalita are the horse loves of my life. She is truely a dream come true :D !I am SOOO glad she made it,she HAD to and I told her and treated her like she had to.I love her more than I can say in words. Thanks for the complements on her :D !Your friend,Moniece

Thanks Laura and Moniece - we are trying to hold on to Llegada. She is so smart and playful... missed a photo opp and probably 10K for the funniest home video the other day...
David was cleaning her pen and he kicked her toy ball over toward her. She eyed the ball and David up and kicked with her back feet and kicked the ball back to him!
So David proceeds to kick it back to her and sure enough she kicks with her back feet and kicks the ball back to him again. They played back and forth for some time. She is quite the little trouble maker!

Carol it's like they have a strain that is really massive and big and another that is extremely tiny. We did a trail ride with a PPR mare that made our 13 2 mares look huge. The video of Frost's dad appears to show that the dad is quite small. Our PPR mare is one of the huge ones but our 7/8 PPR mare is 13 2 and extremely narrow. From the pictures Dulce Sueno, who you might say is the father of the modern PPR, is massive and tall. But Kofresi, a more modern champion is fairly tall but narrow. Guamani, a bella forma champion, was supposed to be big and massive whereas Batalla was supposed to be smaller and more narrow and delicate looking. So some are really really big and massive - very wide shoulders, very muscular, and some aren't big at all.
Our big PPR mare - over 14 2 and massive
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v99/motorgypsy/beegee1.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v99/motorgypsy/IM000668b.jpg
Our 7/8 PPR 13 2 mare who's father is PPR and mother is 3/4 PPR. She's very narrow and small boned - probably from the Kofresi line

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v99/motorgypsy/IMG_0486_1.jpg
By the way the same rider is on both horses so you can really see the size difference by comparing how large the rider looks. And yes we know the first mare was fat but she is still huge. She wasn't fat in the first picture, just the second.

HI All,
From my info Frio Viento ( Frost's sire) was 14 hands tall. He was a Fino Champion and from what i have heard was one of the best. Unfortunately his owner (from what I understand) was hard to deal with so he only sired 20 babies. I have talked to people that wanted to breed to Frio but were turned down by his owner. Not sure about all the details on that issue.......
He sure was pretty.....here's one of him with the owner's daughter riding him at home in FL (notice she's not using stirrups).

I have a video of Frosty and Frio from several years ago. Not long after we got Chinook. Her mother is Caricia El Viento, a daughter of Frio Viento who was owned by Fiddleleaf at the time our mare (Fiddleleaf's Vanilla) was born. There is another of his nieces who is a year younger than Chinook, full sister, out there somewhere but I don't know who owns her.

Remember there is no problem breeding PPR's to mixes or Colombian paso finos. They are all registered with PFHA unless there is a problem like there was with our import mare with two dead parents and no DNA from them. You breed to the stallion that has what you want and if you want the size and Puerto Rican Style of gait and the stallion has the disposition and conformation you want then go for it. Chinook is half Colombian, half PPR. Her dad is quite large so the small size must have come from mom or further back on dad's side - actually I think there are small horses on both sides of her pedigree since she is a Plebeyo grandaughter and I don't think he was large either.
Carol Nelson
10-28-2006, 06:08 PM
Oh, of course, MG's. I originally bought Bunny with the intention of breeding her to Rojo. I have a dream of getting a Golden Palomino and Bunny's conformation and temperament seemed like it would blend nicely with Red's, and it didn't hurt that Michele Branson had seen Bunny in person and vouched for her! I didn't even give a thought to the fact she was Pure Puerto Rican.
Since buying her however, I've had several PPR enthusiasts inform me of the facts of this rare branch of the Paso Fino breed, in particular, that there are only around 2500 registered PPR Pasos in the WORLD...and even more surprising, only around 500 in the USA! I had several make me aware of the importance of preserving this rare strain...so I decided then and there to start looking for a PPR to sire at least one foal from her.
To me, for what I'm looking for, Frosty is the total package...temperament figures heavily in the type of horse I want on my place, and that plus beauty, plus a smooth Pleasure gait...well, what more could one want??? ;-)

HI All,
From my info Frio Viento ( Frost's sire) was 14 hands tall. He was a Fino Champion and from what i have heard was one of the best.
I saw Frio Viento in Ocala, and I don't think he was 14 hands. He was very tiny. An absolutely stunning horse with a tight quick fino, but he was small. I understand that most of his offspring were much larger than him, but just as pretty.

Thanks Joy! Carol had to help me figure out how to post pics on this forum...easy once you know how to do it ........
KyleS.......Your Chinook is very pretty! Is she grey? I know Plebeyo was.....and I think both the Col and PR Plebeyo were Fino horses and grey.
Of course mixing is fine. Frosty has all kinds of foals including mixes with Rocky Mountains. Everyone has different goals in their breeding programs. Since I got my first PPR Paso a couple years ago I have been on a mission to help promote, and protect the Pure Puerto Rican Paso. The Frio Viento line is the PR line I love. This bloodline seems to produce the wonderful temperament that I treasure. I believe this comes from Maria Luisa (Frio's Dam). Maria was a very special mare that performed equally well in parades, shows and trail. She took care of her rider, was wonderfully gaited and was a real sweetheart........... these qualities she passed on to her offspring.
I've had a lot of different breeds including Appaloosas and Icelandics. A little PR Paso mare named Paulina won me over to the breed I am now in love with.......Frosty is just icing on the cake.... :D

Chinook is the palest of cream buckskins. Her mom is a golden palomino and her dad is a dappled bay. A big boy by the way. But there are small horses on either side. Pistachio, her colt who died after digging up and eating fishing line would not have been very tall either.
Carol - we're the same way. We bought our PPR mare with no idea she was so special and found out that her brother and nephew are top of the line show PPR's. She has an amazing gait and beautiful babies also. But BIGG!! So we're also shopping for a PPR husband for her. She is heavily inbred Kofresi but threw back to Dulce Sueno and Guamani's large size, big bones and broad chest. Her shoulders are so wide they are like shelves. We're really crazy about her!

Actually if you look at her hair closely she looks like a roan from head to toe except for her points which are jet black. It's a very strange color with white hairs and gold hairs mixed, not all the same color hairs as it is with our buckskin colored dun mare who is also very light creme

It's really neat isn't it. A lot of people think she's a grey she's so pale and get's even lighter in the winter when her frosting grows in heavier on her mane.
Oh- another interesting note - duns frequently have shading on their manes and tails - an overlay of much lighter color. But the difference between this and the frosting of a true buckskin is the length and amount of the light hair. The frosting of a true buckskin is short hair - perhaps four inches long - and sheds out some in the summer. The frosting on the tail is also short hairs right at the dock. The frosting is also translucent silver in color rather than pale creme or lighter than the body color which is typical of the duns shading. the dun shading is more irregular, may not go the full length of the mane and the hairs are the full length of the mane and can actually cover most of the mane. In a true buckskin the black mane hangs down well below the frosting.
I should put this in the dun pictures section shouldn't I!!

Q does not get as pale as Chinook. She gets lighter in the winter, but is still has a lot of color to her. When she came here, she had a lot of frosting, but I think the frosting hairs were nearly white, not buckskin color.
Heidi
Sorry this is in the Pally thread, but it shows her frosting when she arrived, 12/2004. Wow! Can hardly believe I've had her almost 2 years!

In the winter Chinook's frosting is so obvious it looks like I'm riding a palomino when I ride her.
Isn't Q a buckskin rather than a dun???

Isn't Q a buckskin rather than a dun???
Yes. She has leg barring and a countershaded dorsal that darkens and fades with her summer to winter coat. She is not a true dun.

If she has leg bars she's a dun. Perhaps she's both buckskin and dun. We think Pistachio was since mom is a true buckskin and dad is a grulla dun. We have a really pale buckskin colored dun who's a true brown plus dun rather than a black plus agouti plus dun. Her points are chocolate brown. A lot of duns are registered as buckskin with PFHA. In fact our very obviously grulla dun stallion is registered as a buckskin. One of these days we'll get him change. Chinook's mom is a golden palomino. I need to post her picture in this section. She's a PPR. I probably said that already but Oh well!!
Heidi

I'd love to see a pic of Chinook's mom! I think the golden palomino color is just beautiful, but I seem to see more pale ones than golden colored ones.
I don't think Q is dun. Her dorsal is not distinctive and permanant. Doesn't really matter, she is beautiful to me and I think she is 'dun' enough with the countershading to please my passion for dun horses.
I had a palomino QH mare in the late 80's who I bred to a grulla QH. I was surprised when I got a black, or smoky black, colt. I really thought I had a great chance at a dilute (one I could SEE) or dun...and I got neither. My mare was a beautiful golden pally and she really darkened when she foaled and was nursing. Looked gorgeous! I only have 35mm photos, none of her on the computer.

Ok ladies, Chinook is gorgeous and I love her. Q is beautiful too. In fact, they deserve their own thread, instead of hijacking the palomino one.

Chance is doing fine----I will try to send you some recent pics, since I have some. Do you know the story of how Jim Swank got Frio Viento? The Cale's told this story---that the woman who owned Frio asked Mr. Swank if he would try to undo any damage that her son had done to Frio by racing him in the streets for quarters. He agreed to take him & train him as a Paso Fino should be trained. During the course of his training, Jim Swank grew more & more attached to Frio & asked the woman if he could train him for show & buy him. She agreed & Frio became Mr. Swank's personal mount & favorite horse. The workers around the barn did not like Frio because he was so intelligent & mischievious. Chance will take your hat & run with it or take anything hanging out of your back pocket. Paula Cale raised & pampered Frost, so he is a woman's horse.
Chance loves me, but he is chauvanistic-----he is more a man's horse.
I have a copy of a video of Frio in Bella Forma lines going down the driveway at Mr. Swank's place in Florida with Mr. Swank holding the lines. This was given to the Cales & they made copies for Bonnie Cannon who was Frost's 2nd owner. I am so glad that you have him & are showing & promoting him so he can get the recognition he deserves. He is a fine horse & by having 2 foals by him--I know what he throws---gait, temperment, intelligence & beauty. Frio died about 4 or 5 years ago while Mr. Swank was away on Christmas vacation-----the horse coliced & I guess there wasn't anything that could be done ---I really don't know the details about that. Oh, Chance's full sister--Rosita lives in Memphis area & I keep in touch with her owner.
Hope you find this information interesting. Lets keep in touch.
Donelle
Anyway, I don't know if you know any of this, but I thought you might want to know if you didn't.

I was so excited to hear that Sidra is still alive. I owned her first daughter, Riqueza Bravo, and briefly owned Sidra when I rescued her and her second daughter, Innocencia (who is owned by Milda Minter still, I believe) Although she was not the most beautiful mare herself, Sidra had the most beautiful babies and she was GAITED GAITED GAITED. Those Frio bloodlines should be kept going. Several of the top trainers who rode Frio said that he was the best natural fino horse ever and although he was reputed to be a little difficult, his owner, Jim Swank, said it was just that he was really smart and had no time for people who didn't respect him. I would love to get in touch with Sidra's owners.....to fill them in on her California history :D
MG's, You are not forgiven because you were never in trouble! I just wanted a chance to compliment Chinook in the proper place...she definitely deserves it! :D :D :D
LOVED the Frio Viento photos! Wow, I wish there were more like him out there, unless the "difficult" part was dominant...I don't need any more of that. One or two of those and you've met your "quota", if you know what I mean. 8-)

I think Chinook and General could put on a show that we could make megabucks selling tickets to!!! He surely is a keeper!!! There's something about the more difficult ones that make it so special when you finally win them over. I'll never forget the first time I watched him gaiting in circles at the Asheville parade and thinking WOW - he is seriously amazing!!!

Donelle,
Thanks for the info on Chance and the bit on Frio. I never heard how MR. Swank got Frio....that is a very nice story. I'm glad Mr. Swank ended up with him......
Echo.......I'm sure my friend Gay Campbell would love to hear from the person who saved Sidra! I'm so glad you did! Here's Gay's email address.... hunterrun@pennswoods.net . SHe has had Sidra for a while now and Sidra is still producing those beautiful babies! In fact the palomino colt Sidra had by her side when Gay got her was my first Paso Fino!
I also bought a red dun filly out of Sidra and her PPR stallion Pechudo named Paulina....she was an awesome mare and although we lost her to pneumonia this past spring left us a gorgeous Palomino filly.
Gay still has the black ppr filly who is full sister to my Paulina...they are twins in disposition. We hope to breed Sidra to Frosty in 2007.....
I'm so glad I joined this forum.......so many nice folks to talk to and so much information!

Cindy - you are right! Chico has a very similar look to Riqueza.
So funny that we don't get what we think we should with foals. I was actually hoping for a couple of colts this year, as I would just like to have a couple of nice geldings.....but I ended up with TWO stunning palomino fillies. Of course, I'm not complaining...... but I was SURE I would get at least one colt. Ah well....I guess I will try again.....my dilute herd is now looking pretty awesome....four palominos and two buckskins....and a nice chestnut stallion to complement them. :D

11-03-2006, 11:38 AM
Chico's sire is "Rivers Bend Senero" (#24,570.) Sidra came with Chico by her side. I think he was only about a month old......he was so sweet and friendly and so pretty! It was love at first sight!
Hmmmmm...embryo tranfers. Sounds like a wonderful idea to me! Sidra is still producing but she is getting up there in age. She may be around 22? We were going to breed her to Frosty this year but she had been leased out to Mandy Orvash to breed to her PR stallion Contodo Mi Corazon.......she had a chestnut colt for Mandy that I hear is very nice. Mandy of course wanted a filly.(don;t we all). Sidra had her foal in July and the baby had to be weaned so we missed this breeding season. Hope we don't have trouble since she is open now.
We did breed 2 other nice PR mares to Frosty but the older one(Tiffany's Travesura) absorbed hers. The Chestnut mare(Dulcera de Faeton) is still bred to Frosty for next summer......she is nice and has Faeton LaCE and lots of Batalla in her lines. Might be another Palomino filly...... ;-)

Hi Helene: Yes, I think Mimosa is very happy being a mom. And she's a great broodmare because she has babies that are an improvement on her. Look at that nice big butt on Alegria - she is only 7 weeks old but you can see that she is going to be built like her Daddy. Such a pretty little thing....very sweet but feisty. And now she is getting some darker patches on her legs and shading on her face.

I just love all the horses pictured. I have to admit, Frost does catch my eye. I know of a chocolate palomino stallion standing with a friend here in OK with the Coral LaCE breeding. I have a few palominos, I've always wanted one, and I also like the rarer dunalino, and I got that too! My prayers got answered in a big way! Here is Goldie (Golden Tango APFHA registered- she's by Apache de Ventura). She's just 3 but took to riding like she was born with the talent, she carries herself like a much older way more experienced horse.

This is my disabled husbands horse Amigo de Oro. He's a very intelligent fellow, charming and a real gentle love. We have for one of our stallions a half brother by sire to Amigo. Actually Amigo is a true dunalino, he has the dorsal stripe, the wither marks, and leg bars, plus the amber eyes. The stallion is a dunskin. It was quite hot the day this picture was taken, we were all covered with sweat in just minutes!

Here are two of my foals. The one laying down is my stud colt Frosty, the other is Dorado, she came in the belly of a mare I rescued. I am curious if she's not a dunalino, her dam is a black based yellow dun, and Dorado has the leg bars, but no visible dorsal stripe or wither marks.

This last one is Melanie. Actually I'm not sure at this time if she's a pure bred Paso Fino or a Peruvian Paso, she has exquisite gait but no termino, so I may do a DNA test on her. I rescued her a few weeks ago from a slaughter feedlot up in Colorado near Ft. Collins along with a bay roan mare. Melanie came here very sick and so thin, but she's just beautiful to me despite that, and her mane is to die for- so thick and soft. She's slowly gaining back her appetite and her weight will take time, but we'll get her back to her proper glory. She has alert eyes and ears. Maybe someone out there may know something about her? When she's back in good shape I will have her started. This was taken a few days after she got here and had a good bath, she was so filthy.

Aha! You are the one who rescued her, we were [ this] close to running up there. I am so glad you got her! She looks like such a sweertheart! Please keep us updated on her progress and the roans. The roan was still up on their website as needing addopting last I saw. Yeah on them both!

Yes, I am the one that got them. Alice Oliver from up in Kansas (who bought Monieces Cola) is also a soft hearted person and she did the traveling to get them for me for just fuel costs since Robert can't go very far with his back trouble. I am so grateful to her for that. Lauren told me there was a gelding too on the feedlot, but he was shipped off before I could get her the $$$. :( I saw later a thread about the subject, but I didn't post anything. I have a habit of finding unwanted, unloved, neglected and/or abused pasos and if I can I buy them, love and care for them, and if I don't end up keeping them, I sell them all new and happy and shiny to a loving home. It's worked out very well in the past for me and the horses. I know there are more out there, I have a friend who is helping another who's quite ill sell hers, but I'm plumb full right now, and it's enough work to keep us busy. Melanie is quite a mare, when she is back to normal, she's going to be a firey thing! I think maybe she was abused, she is very head and upper neck shy, especially around her ears. We're slowly and gently working with her to desensitize her. From the looks of her teats, she's had a foal too. And she's just three!

The mare Melanie... speculating here...but just may be of Anteado Windsong breeding. She sure looks like she could be and he was fairly prolific in Colorado.
What kind of DNA test will you do? One that confirms she is Paso Fino? Or one for Peruvian Paso? Does such a DNA test exist?
I know you cannot just submit DNA without knowing the parents as the DNA testing for PFHA is "DNA Proofing" ..proves parentage, but does not ID who a horse "could be" without parent names to check against.
Another prolific sire here that is palomino would be Tomaria's Gallardo.
Good luck with her and the roan mare....got pics of roan mare?

I had in previous years a GORGEOUS paso fino gelding that I by chance found at a local auction who's phenotype is still one fo the finest I've ever seen, and at that time, he was aged at being 12. The PFHA said due to his age they couldn't do DNA but bloodtyping. Unfortunately there were no matches- even with other paso registries, and I was amazed- he was such a fine example of what a paso fino should be! I think I can do DNA and they try to match it up on her- I'll be asking, as I plan on doing that for Scarlett, the roan too. Here's her picture.

Thank you, thank you for saving these two! I tried to get the money together to save at least one of them, but it just didn't work out in time. They both look like gorgeous horses, well worth saving.

The roan sure does look familiar.... we don't have many roan Pasos here.
I have to ask a lady about the roans who is presently out of town....but I will get back to you on possibilities where she may be from...
