I have to admit that if I were going to get another breed besides a paso you can bet it would be a Rocky.... Sorry all, but I think they are super classy!

You know loving Rockies is NOT being a TRAITOR. Their foundation stock and gait is Paso Fino and there are many Paso Finos who are double registered. Think of them as large, chocolate Paso Finos.
And they do breed for a more laid back disposition then we do. But, they ARE mostly Paso Fino.
These are Trote y Gallope horses...

Wait one gosh darn minute. I just learned something new. Rocky Mountains were bred from Pasos?
At my last barn there was a Rocky Mountain who looked exactly like my horse but almost two hands taller. From a distance it was hard to tell the two apart. I thought that was just a coincidence!
My next favorite gaited breed is the Foxtrotter. Are they intermingled with the Paso? If so, my mind might just SNAP! :question
How about my Maltese terrier? I love that breed. Is there paso in there? I'm going to be looking for Paso blood everywhere now.....
I've often wondered about my sister. She's a little high strung.

Well, I could be wrong here, but I suspect most American breeds owe at least something genetically to the horses of the Spanish explorers. Certainly alot of American breeds have gaited members. There are gaited Morgans, Appys ASBs, mustangs and TWH. Of course some are more closely related such at the RMH. And I find it interesting that if you look up a description of the now extinct Jennet, it describes a smooth gaited horse with spots all over its body. Hmmmm sound like an other breed we know? Isn't someone trying to revive the Jennet? How would they do that?
As for your sister and your maltese Terrier, well I kinda doubt it, maybe a Jack Russel. I know for sure my Rio reminds me of a happy go lucky, wanna please you at all cost golden retriever.
Okay everybody can tell me I am wrong now.

I have ridden a couple of rockies and they do not feel like the paso. The ones I rode have more reach with the front legs and have more of a rise in the front.
Also I thought that T/Gs had there manes roached. Apparently that is optional with the individual owner.

Very interesting guys! I love the Mane CarolU!! Thank you for pointing out that I am not a traitor..lol
I havent been on a rocky yet, but I will. As I see them the gait looks like a paso but I dont know of it feels...
TrailRider sounds like your the one to ask! I was a bit bummed when you said it doesnt feel like a paso. But was it just as smooth??
Trail Rider
01-31-2006, 02:11 PM
PF, the ride was smooth on the ones I rode. It was just not a paso ride. The pasos I have ridden do not have any rise or fall but are a level ride. Some are smoother than others but all are level.
The 2 rockies I rode had a rise when they reached with the front legs. Not rough but more like the TW rocking motion. It was very comfortable, just not level. I would not hesitate to buy one because of that action, and still might consider one in the future because of their size. Some do have eye problems so be sure to check that if you consider getting one.

Before buying a Paso I leased MFTs for a couple of years and a Rocky Mountain for about six months. The gait feels closer to the MFT than the Paso. To me, they feel like they shuffle along. It's nice and smooth.
I've only ridden two RMHs but whoever says they are breeding them for calm did not meet the two I rode.....lol Crazy boys. I'd rather ride my Paso any day.
The last non-Paso gaited horse I got on at my barn was a TWH who had just thrown his owner. I don't know where my brain goes when I meet a new gaited horse. The owner asked me if I wanted to "try" him....I think she meant try to stay on him....lol.....and I couldn't help myself. I just had to see how smooth he was..even if I hit the mud in two minutes. I didn't....luckily.......and he was very smooth.
This story probably isn't funny unless you know me. I'm no cowboy. I'm not out to prove anything to anyone. There are plenty of horses I wouldn't ride just because what some people see as a challenge I see as removing the fun of the ride. But tell me the horse is gaited and that you'll let me feel his gait......and it doesnt' matter if he just killed his last two riders.....I'm somehow getting on there.....lol It's an illness probably

The Rockies or Mountain horses developed from gaited grade stock in the Appalachian Mountains of eastern Kentucky over the past 30-40 years ... so much of what was in US then...old walker, singlefooted, racking horses, etc. Where the Paso comes in is the same common ancestors of the spanish mustangs, some which had a lateral gait. They had an open registration book until just a few years ago, and some registered Paso Finos did get cross-registered as a Kentucky Mountain Saddle Horse; which is a separate registry from Rocky Mountain Horse Association, which require a minimal height requirment, minimal white on face and legs, minimal action.
Rockies come in different energy levels. They can be more up in the front and more of long gliding stride in the rear; the lack of evenness in his execution can result in a less smooth ride. The gait tendency with Rockies is a towards lateralness resulting in a stepping pace. They are some beautiful animals... but still comparing apples and oranges.

I was hoping Barb would see this and comment, but they have used Coral LaCE as one of their foundation stallions, and there are many double registered horses in both the Peruvian Paso and the Paso Fino.
The MFT may have Spanish stock in the background, but they have had a closed registry I believe for many years. Their gait is essentially our troche. Some are very smooth...some you may as well be trotting on! OUCH. There are many in my area and I have worked with a couple.
Thanks on Diablo's mane...I am sure it would be much nicer if he weren't pastured with my barber horse, Santiago. LOL

Carol that barber gene must be very pervasive because Pistachio totally barbered Chinook's tail - all the way above her hocks. It's finally back down to her fetlocks.

I can't remember the name for the life of me... I think it's a mare and I know it's gray (although motorgypsies horse is gorgeous, and have a long mane, she's not it ;-) ) I do remember the mane was so long they had it rolled up somehow... it wasn't a conventional braid...

Cefiro belonged to JR Morales. He was a gorgeous white gray stallion with an incredible long mane. Unfortunately, he has gone on to horse heaven. I have one photo of him being ridden that doesn't show his mane and one of him in crossties with his mane all up in a braid and ball. But it doesn't sound like the one you are talking about.

That might very well be the one I'm thinking of. I remember how the owner talked about how they "rolled" the mane. Thinking about it, I think they braided it first... but then it was "rolled" up somehow. I just remember the photo. The horse was gorgeous and the mane to his knees...

Chinooks mane is kept rolled up and we posted pictures of it rolled and explained how we did it. She steps on it if we don't keep it rolled. I remember several long manes but don't remember anyone else who rolled the mane but us. I'd be interested if you remember because the way they do it might be better than the way we do it.

Hast, can you post a picture or email me a picture of Cefiro? My paso mare is a granddaughter of his. She is so sweet and has a wonderful long thick mane also.
