Hello Everyone,

As we watch the California wildfires burning from the safety of our homes, we can barely comprehend the complexity of the evacuation process for people and their animals. I've just posted my article about evacuation, and Stephanie Abronson has provided us with a link to download a booklet, "What Do I Do With My Horse in Fire, Flood, and/or Earthquake?" In addition you'll find several excellent contributor articles to help you do your own evacuation planning.

Before winter sets in I will be posting an article by Cappy Tosetti about ventilation and how horses handle cold weather without the aid of portable heaters (remember that horses were here before barns). Save your money, your horses, and your barn by NOT buying portable heaters!

For those of you who have been showing horses for many years, especially Appaloosas, Paints, and Quarter Horses, we have lost a special friend. Sandy Shaffer passed away on October 19th. She was a dear friend of mine, and a very special friend and mentor to many people in the horse world.

Regards,
Laurie Loveman

These fires are horrifying. Somehow, my 'old' computer could not download your info, but, from my own expierience, I can offer this: Always have your horsetrailer ready to go. Have dog and cat crates ready also. We, with the help of a friend, managed to get 3 horses, 4 dogs, and 6 cats, evacuated in 1/2 hour. Seems impossible to me, looking back, but we did it! Luckily, the fire did not reach any of our barns/homes, did come within a few hundred feet. I guess, from that day on, my message is: ALWAYS BE PREPARED! You think it can not happen to you? Think again...
