I am a major Hilachas lover, having owned direct children too, and knew MANY of them in their heyday(20-30 years ago!)
I have a linebred colt now, I call "Hilachas"(not his real name)because he's got the personality to the T....and the best of the looks....I have several linebred Hilachas, my second favorite line.....if you'd care to pm me, be happy to answer specifics! but yes, there's a few threads on the subject....

He was very dark bay, with a beautiful head and conformation. His sire was Zipa and his dam was Muneca de VI. He produced many champions, many grand champions, Champion of Champions, all too numerous to name individually. His babies were shown in all categories of classes: classic fino, performance and pleasure. In addition to the reproductive quality of this stallion, he was also renowned for his intelligence. As a Foundation Sire, Hilachas met all criteria. He and his descendants have won the Get of Sire and Produce of Dam Classes many, many times. He and his descendants have been placed on the Top Ten Sires and Dams lists many, many times. He was also named Sire of the Year in 1974, 75 and 76.

Every horse I have here, except Baby is Hilaches, with Rosie being double Hilaches. What I find he passes on is great intelligence, a beautiful head, nice conformation, and a sense of humor. Now each of his offspring get some or all of these traits. You know you've got a Mr. or Mrs. "Hilaches" when you have a very naughty but loveable horse.

Hilaches heads:

And Hilaches personality:

Trooper, the horse in my first picture, is the one horse I have with all these traits...I wish I had pictures of some of his antics, but here is just enjoying life:

Jen, what is the name of your mom's mare? Rufina had alot of offspring and stayed busy with babies. Do you know more about Rufina? I never saw her in person. She is registered as a dun. Any pics?

http://www.geocities.com/lynngallup/gracewoodfarm/images/arianna/ariannaPortrait7_30_05web.jpg
Arianna's portrait shot

Arianna is put together very well and I love her pedigree top and bottom.

Rufina's dam Consentida (Arianna's granddam) was an APF Foundation Dam, who is also in my mare Miaventura's pedigree too!

How fun...an Arianna sibling ....let's see some pics please! This is one baby due in March I am really looking forward to ... Arianna and Emperador...my first linebreeding on the Meridian Meadows lines, Hilachas in this case. Arianna has just been the most huge for so long!! She rather waddles and stays hungry!!! 1 1/2 months to go. ;-)

SandyMM

Consentida (Arianna's granddam) was an APF Foundation Dam

She was? I knew that mare and two of her owners - I don't remember her being a foundation mare in APF....?

She _was_ well-named... never saw a more 'spoiled' mare... LOL - had a remarkably high opinion of herself... :-) Comb out her mane and she would just priss around for a while! :-) She was very well behaved although not sure if I ever saw her ridden....

Talk about waiting on babies - we waited one night until really late... no sooner turnedout the lights and started to leave when we heard a gush of 'water' and the baby was half born before we got back to the stall! That foal was Alegria Brio by Dominguin - a Dominicam stallion, I believe... also, knew many of Consentida's earlier foals....

LynnG

Hi Sandy,
yes APF has Consentida as a Foundation dam in the 1977 APF magazine. Her early noted show offspring were Mariscalito Ra Rio (not PFHA reg), Sorprecita (not PFHA reg), Carmen Pina, etc.

My gray mare is a great granddaughter of Consentida via daughter Sorprecita.

Now what you described in personality is Arianna! She wants to be queen bee; in her mind she is the queen bee! gentle to be around, but in the herd she is still fussing and can get into some kicking matches to be the sole queen bee. Now when she first came here, she took advantage that she was new and came in with cannons blasting with the herd... and they let her be the queen bee for a short while, and then realized they had been had by this smaller compact mare..and life hasn't been the same since! Kids can ride her as both of blameitobrio's girls have ridden her. Funny, an older guy was going to ride her after she came here, and she wouldn't go with him away from the barn and even thru a bluff at him rearing slightly. He was rather a novice so got off then, and I got on her and made her go! She went, and that was the last of that behavior. She likes attention, but loves food! Arianna has a gentle, but interesting personality..so maybe gets some of that from her grandmother!

http://www.geocities.com/lynngallup/gracewoodfarm/images/arianna/arianna_graysonLunge6_05web.jpg
guess who is at the end of the lunge line?

SandyMM
02-02-2006, 08:49 PM
Funny how that goes... I knew Sorprecita from the time she was very young - showed her in Bella Forma with Cindy White for Dot LLoyd for several years. Cindy rode her in Fino mares. She was a fino only mare - old style.... couldn't go faster than a bunny hop in pasture - never could keep up with the others no matter how hard she tried... She was coal black with the lower half of her tail already turning white as a filly. Later pix she turned gray. I believe she was imported in utero and was by Onyx.

LynnG
02-02-2006, 09:34 PM
Sorprecita must have been well liked as all 7 of her offspring have "de Sorpricita" as part of their name! She is registered as black. Did she turn gray? I have seen pics of Sorprecita in my old APF stuff, none of Consentida to my memory.

Sandy, did you happen to know Emeteria? Imported in utero from Colombia in the mare Gacela (sin Par) by Dave Jones. She was an APf mare that produced well.

SandyMM
02-02-2006, 09:48 PM
I have several pix of Sorprecita - black as black could be - except for the odd white bottom half of her tail... she kept that for a _long_ time.... Not sure if she was ever sold to another owner, but Dee and Dot tended to name their mares offspring with variations of the sire's and dam's names.

did you happen to know Emeteria?

Nope... I rode a son of hers by Criol que tal for _many years. One of the best-behaved stallions I have ever ridden - a chestnut w/flaxen mane.... Gucci que tal. He had been injured (right hind fetlock) in a fence accident as a youngster and his gait was never _quite_ right, but he was a go any where, do anything kind of horse - kind of a 4-legged ATV.

LynnG
02-02-2006, 10:21 PM
well my maybe that black gene will come thru on her baby as E throws black offspring also. Rufina (Hilachas x Consentida) was registered as dun, so Consentida must have been carrying a dun gene under the gray. Arianna has a strong dorsal stripe and shoulder barring though registered chestnut.

I'm getting a new foaling stall ready today. one mare cassietta due this month and arianna due next month...so I'll have two easily ready. ;-)

emperador traces to emeteria thru daughter corveta que tal, his granddam. Plus the buckskin mare Pasiflora Sin Par I used to show alot was Gacela's last offspring, so sister to Emeteria. I loved that mare...she could do anything and did ...showed and placed in perfomance, bellas formas, versatility, western, and I rode her in adult equitation; then also trail riding and so many test-rides to new people. :D

Lynn, my moms mare is Dama de Carros. I think my mom has a pic of Rufina. A few yrs back she was advertised for sale by a lady in Tn. At the time, she was in her twenties.

Dama sounds alot like your mare. She too is notorious for getting into kicking matches with those that challenge her. She keeps everyone else in line with just a glance. She is high spirited under saddle and will test new riders with a crow hop or two just make sure they are paying attention. She is very loving and gentle on the ground. Here is a pic of her and her last filly, Chica.

Jen, where do you live? Your mom's mare is a 1990 Rufina model. Arianna is a 1993 Rufina model. Wonder is others look the same. Rufina was born in 1978 and shows having 14 offspring from 1983 (age 5) to 2001 (23 years old)...I have an older PFHA CD, so maybe more. That's alot of babies for one mare.

Daneen had several pics of gallopa in ads. I saw El Vicario when a yearling and Daneen then lived in SC...he was a gorgeous boy and still is! El Vicario is full bro to my mare's dam, Dea Valida. So I would love to see some pics.... Mia's former owner had told me how versatile Gallopa was, that she could do anything. If I am not mistaken he's just a few years younger than Dea, right? That would make him about 20 yo.... If he's aging as gracefully as Dea I'm sure he still looks great.

It's quite funny, cause Mia looks even more like Hilachas than her mother, her mom has more of the El Pastor, straighter face. But I guess she got even more Hilachas from her sire.

One of the things I am looking forward to breeding Mia with Emperardor to accomplish is a more refined leg, Mia has kinda "knobby" knees, and though she's about 14.2h she looks kinda short legged. E has such nice elegant looking legs more proportional to his heigth...

I went and took some photos of Dea in the fall but I wasn't pleased with the way they turned out, she didn't seem like she was feeling too great that day..... She's usually so perky.

I have an El Vicario Ltd son (El Jerarca Ltd) who is 21 this year. He is semi-retired, only because i have too many young horses to work. He is still handsome and sound and full of himself. My neighbor (who doesn't really ride) takes him a couple times a year on overnight rides with me.

I will attempt to post a couple of pix. I have never done this before, so if they work, I'll try to dig a few more up. He was my second paso, and he was QUITE the handfull in his younger days. But, many white-knuckle trail miles later, he became great!
One picture of him smoozing my hubby for a treat last summer, and one pix of my neighbor riding him on the trail last year.

I remember Hilachas in 1978, when Ray Shougar of Homestead owned him. Hilachas was not a big horse and was more on the quiet side in his stall. He didn't like to be hand bred - her preferred pasture exposure. Ray moved to Colorado and Hilachas was later sold.

Pat Figueroa told me back then, that she rode Hilachas and had to blind fold him, because there was nobody around to hold him while she mounted. Once she was in the saddle, she just pulled the rag off his face and they took off (in the ring).

In the late 1970's, there were several other Foundation Sires here in the South Florida area, including El Pastor and Lucerito. But, Hilachas appeared to produce better get.

He was bred to countless mares while in North Florida, where the "Que Tal" Pasos were bred. Dave Jones, from the King Ranch, was involved with Hilachas during that time and was quoted as saying, "Hilachas is a horse you can't lie to, he's that smart".

Hey Coreen,

I remember a horse that looked just like that back in the late 1970's. He was the most unusual looking horse at the time, because he had a brown face and a greyish roan body.

I can't remember his name (I don't think it's the same horse), because you mentioned this horse is Ejemplo's grandson.

The horse I'm thinking of was owned and ridden by Betty Cease. She also owned Espejo Que Tal and he was ridden by Prico (I wonder what ever happened to Prico?). Sometimes, he'd get all stressed out and did, what Betty called, a duck walk with his rear legs.

I wish I could remember his name
.

GeorgeGuns
02-13-2006, 02:58 PM
I think there are probably more roans than folks realize, in the past they were called greys.
Bri gets his color from his dam Fantasia del Rosa, and just guessing here, Fantasia probably got it from her dam Morita. Fantasia was listed as black though.
As far as I know, Bri is the only black roan stallion makin babies. He throws roan consistently, but the mare I've bred him to twice here is grey and she is adamant about passing that on too!
I've got to get a really good head shot of Bri, it screams Hilachas. His daugther Pesquisa got the wee fine muzzle too, but more likely from the mare who is also 2x Hilachas.

LynnG

Betty Cease owned the blue roan stallion Fiogon que tal (Hilachas x Mora Azul). We had owned a Mahoma x Mora Azul daughter who was a blue/black roan and produced the same color...her name was Enviadora que tal. During winter, she would turn close to black, but shed out very light in the body during the summer.

I saw Morita at Rancho del Rosa...she was a fleabitten gray when I saw her in the late 1970's. We had a blue roan son from Morita and Ejemplo que tal named Gandalf del Rosa.

Hey Lynn,

The name Fiogon que tal does not sound familar. But, I really can't be certain.

Then again you know what happens to people's memory after 40.

Did you ever see this horse? Do you remember him well?
If so, do you recall his "duck walk'?

Thanks,
Helen

Well Morita surely could have been hiding a roan gene under all that grey! She must have, as one needs a roan parent to produce a roan. Maybe I inadvertantly carried on a "family tradition"? Rio is definately greying and I bet Pesquisa does too.

Cool thing about blacks though - roan vs strong rabicano - the roaning in a black is always silver, and yes roans do get darker in the winter. Nice touch, lol.

So, ya got any pics of these other horses?

PrivateTreaty, I only saw pics of Fiogon que tal in the old IPFS/APF magazines in the Fl shows.

My first Paso Fino experiences in the mid-70's were in the Atlantic and Piedmont regions, so personally most familiar with horses in these areas, outside of the PFOBA/PFHA National Shows... Rancho del Rosa was in Tryon, NC and one of the larger breeders in the area. They stood stallions such as Ejemplo que tal, Toledo, Viento Siero, Ganador del Rosa. Ejemplo got all the best mares then. My other experiences in late 70's early 80's, got to see the seed mare stock for Casa LaCE (GA), Greener Pastures(FL), Cabal Paso Finos (CO)...

Fiogon que tal was the first Paso - first horse - I ever saw with the funky red/brown head and roan body. There were others that came along, but he's the first I remember.
