The halt is a test. Allot of judges like to do it on the sounding board to hear the rhythm of how the horse starts. The paso gait is a square gait and how a horse stops and starts indicates his squareness. If the horse isn't balanced he will not be able to halt correctly nor when he begins will the first strides be properly cadenced.
