I was in the tackroom, about two stalls away from the mare,
when I heard a very loud kick.

When I checked on the horses, it was La Dinastia.
She was on her back and I called For help.
She didn't want to get up and less than 5 mins later she died.
I don't think this was colic.

Raul arrived shorthly after.
The Vet arrived at the barn, as I was leaving.
We hope to know soon the cause of her death.

They can leave us so quickly without even a goodbye. Another reminder to appreciate the living each and every minuted of the day. We're so sorry.

I believe everyone's nightmare is to loose a beloved horse this way. I am so very sorry for her and her owners...and I imagine you won't sleep well for a few nights - it is a very hard thing to witness.

I am so sorry.

Thank you CarolU and Moniece. Yes, it was an awful night.

I was with another lady when I discover the mare.
I asked her to run for help and I stayed with the mare.
Two men that were on the far side of the property came running.

Tensions are sky high at a time like this and I had to ask one of the
men to calm down. We could not display all this emotion next
to a down horse.

We attempted twice to get her up, thinking at first it was colic.
She was not displaying any of the classic colic symptoms.
So, I asked the men to stop trying to get her up, because
I didn't think it was colic.

The man holding the lead rope insisted on holding her head up.

I was standing next to the mare when moments later the
other lady asked me, "Is she okay?" I look a close look at
her flank, her face and I said, "I think she's dead".

The mare's head went limp to the ground after the man holding
her head up loosened his grip on the lead rope.
After touching her body and her face, it only took a couple
of second for disbelief to disappear. That's when the other
lady, one of the gentlemen and I started to cry.

I don't know which one was worse, seeing her die (so quickly
and we were so helpless) or calling the owner back to tell him
his prized mare was dead.

Hi Michelle,

I'm sorry I didn't get a chance to say good-bye to you before you left the barn with your mare. I haven't seen you nor your mom in days. Good luck at the new barn.

Take care,
Helen Diaz
