So what do horses do in weather like this? or what do owners do with their horses with lots of snow? Are they barn-bound?

Well, I meant to take the camera with me when I went down to throw the horses another bale of hay, but I forgot it........

I have my 4 still turned out - they have a shelter but this morning they were all about 1/2 way out in the pasture pawing through the snow for food.....this afternoon they were near the barn pawing through snow - 2 were in the shelter hanging out (that is where the water bucket is too).....

I threw the hay out for them, and 2 decided to shake and get the snow off.....BB just started eating hay, and Lucy looked at me as if to say 'you are supposed to feed GRAIN when you come!! (They get grain 1x/day, had it this morning!)

I do have the area in front of the actual 'horse stalls' plowed out - in case it gets too bad outside (REALLY windy/rainy etc).....but I haven't used it yet this winter!

Mine pretty much just eat, poop, play.

I leave mine turned out too. They can/do go where they want to. They usually stay under the shelter and watch the snow fall, but once it's there, it's GOOD STUFF!!!

Now, if you are asking what I do with the horses when it's nasty, I feed them and clean up poop! Of course! LOL

Actually, I have a pole barn covered "arena" between stalls. It is 30' x 60'. I do mostly ground work and some saddle work in the winter. I will ride in the winter, but not when it's too cold (I have asthma) and not when the footing is bad. I get lots of snow here, but if I trailer out to Judi's she doesn't and the dirt roads are usually dry and frozen all winter. We do ride on nice days...normally several times a month. Each winter is different, we'll see.

So beautiful. I do miss snow.

We used to have three good snows a year in upstate SC but haven't had a good one in four years. BUT a few years ago we were driving on the Blue Ridge Parkway in western NC not far from where we live in SC and actually watched hoarfrost appear on the mountain as a cloud slid over it. The mountain was instantly painted white as the cloud slid over the top of the mountain and down it. It took maybe a minute or two for it to cover the entire mountain. We were just awestruck.

But now to brag. We brought Lula and Kalua, two of our best riding horses to Florida two days ago and even though a cold front is passing through and we had about 8 inches of rain last night and a huge thunderstorm we were able to ride them today - although the winds were pretty strong for not having a storm and they were antsy after last night. Kalua was perfect but she was extremely nervous so I didn't ride her very long. I asked her to walk, then corto, then do the same in reverse and did this for about 15 minutes in a fairly small circle, then ended the session. But after acquainting Lula (who has many more miles on her) with the very scary fence (privacy and you can see through little slits of it) and all the jumps she was fantastic. Relaxed and solid as a rock.

It was about 68 degrees with gusts perhaps up to 30 mph and partly cloudy. A huge amount of sand washed all over from the rain. Quite a storm last night. They had tornadoes not too far from us. They said the roof of the jail was damaged and lots of limbs down everywhere.

Great pics guys!

Yeah beautiful pics made here in MN, but go out in it and it isnt so fun...

However I prefer if it is cold to have snow. Brown and cold isnt fun I dont think..

FL sure looks beautiful to me! Summer went way too fast for me...

But if things go well and I find a job I am off to the Ozarks, been 30-40's and rain there, not freezing rain, missed my area by 50miles.. luckly...

:v:

My boys are out 24/7, they have an open barn to go in if they want, but it seems they never do.... They like to be free...:v:

My mare is boarded out over the winter. my pasture is open to the north with 80 acres for the wind and snow to get going across and makes it miserable. so she's by herself over the summer months and runs with the Lips and the Clydes over the winter.

The barn owners keep an area plowed out, around the gate and going out to where the hay bales are located so the horses don't have to fight the snow but they frequently go off during the day thru the deep snow and paw. They go out during the day and are all stalled at night.

it's just my opinion but i think horses that are not fighting the deep snow in below zero temps and trying to stay warm are alot less prone to end up with arthritis in later years. i know i couldn't crawl in bed at night and not have my mare also tucked in for the evening. but then the old cowboys have told me i've been nuts for years because i always hauled water to my horses over the winter when they believed they could always just eat snow to stay hydrated. :v:

It was butt freezing cold here today with stiff winds making the wind chill factor down to about 50 degrees in the middle of the afternoon. However, about 8 of us brave paso people exposed ourselves to the elements and went on a trail ride  Horses were really feeling frisky - what usually takes us a little over two hours only took an hour and a half yesterday. Great riding weather. YIPPEE I love it when it's cold (in Florida :p)

When I went down to feed the horses this evening (just as dusk was falling) - I had to call all 4 of them in from the far reaches of the pasture....they were down there out of the wind pawing through snow to eat.....they had been up by the barn because close to 10 gallons of water was gone - since yesterday - now they have been fed, have 2 bales of hay to share.....I'll see them tomorrow!

I'll have to get pictures of them - especially fuzzy wuzzy BB!
