View Full Version : the dun and grulla Paso Fino- photos wanted here
Hello,
Per suggestion, here's a dun thread, for all of us who LUV those dorsal stripes and zebra markings! C'mon, don't be shy, I know some of you have duns and love to share, so let's stripe this place up a bit!
Here's my favorite dun, General.
General at Biltmore, my favorite trail buddy. On the trail is his favorite place  :

Pasofan, my mare is a Gallopa QT granddaughter thru her dam, with El Pastor and tons of Hilachas. What's Storm's whole name, I'd like to take a look at his pedigree and see how closely related they are...
Is it possible for there to be a dun factor that is very minimally expressed? My mare has some shadowing at her withers and where her leg black ends it's not very uniform, she has what I would call a counter shaded back but perhaps it is just a very faint dorsal stripe?? Her mom is solid bay, no color anywhere and her dad is grey... I'm breeding her to Lynn's grulla this spring and am hoping for a dun or grulla baby. I would absolutely love a light grulla like General!!
And Shelley, that Teki is going to be beautiful no matter what color she ends up being!!

I have not register'ed storm..
Don't forget - PFHA has a 'special' coming up soon on 'overage' registrations that works out to about half-price... you can go on the website or check PFHW magazine for details. There is a very limited window of opportunity - you don't want to send in registration info too soon or too late. DNA kits take about 10 days to 2 weeks to process and need to be finished duringthe registration process - good luck if you decide to register Storm! :D

Pasofan, guess what? I got an email from Leslie in ND. She just got DNA tests back on a mare of hers. Red's previous owner did the stallion report, indicating Red (Campanero) was the sire. Well, DNA says Listo is the sire. Prev owner won't sign ammended report. Bummer for her, huh? So, goes to show you, with that lady, you never know.....

Here's the red "butt" girl with her dorsal ... Arianna de Dixieland
Marques de Sol Reye x Rufina de Rancho Blanco (dun). She has a shoulder bar too. She's due next month to grulla man E. E's dam is regsitered as chestnut also, out of a zebra peanut butter dun mare Corveta que tal
http://www.geocities.com/lynngallup/gracewoodfarm/images/picassa/picassaLeftSide10_04web.jpg
Here's Picassa de Dulce... though bay she has a distinct dorsal which you can see a little bit of here. Picassa is Espirita's (grulla filly) dam, so Picassa passed a dun gene to E's black/grulla gene.
http://www.geocities.com/lynngallup/gracewoodfarm/images/miaventura/miaWalkweb.jpg
Miaventura... though you can't see it here. She is registered with a dorsal marking and when she is shed out you can see it faintly under the gray. She is by a Lunares son (dun factor) out of a black mare... you can imagine the color possibilities with Emperador?! Mia had a buckskin (dun) filly with primitive markings also.
http://www.geocities.com/lynngallup/gracewoodfarm/images/emperador/spiritside7_04.jpg
Espirit de Davidson ... a dun Emperador daughter with Mar de Plata, Resorte IV, Ejemplo breeding on the dam's side. She lives in Lenoir, NC. Shown as a yearling. I saw her when she was a baby when I went to first look at Emperador..and really liked her then and as yearling too...I would have brought her home.
http://www.geocities.com/lynngallup/gracewoodfarm/images/emperador/corrinaside7_04.jpg
This is Karena de Blancheland as a yearling. She is also an E daughter out of a Springtime Radiante mare, also Nevado, Monarca, Ensueno, Hilaches breeding thru dam. She's in the Lenoir NC area.

Leslie said Listo was bred to 8-10 mares when he was at her farm.
When Cindy had them all the studs/mares ran together, you know. So, Cindy probably never knew for sure who was bred to who. Realita passed away last November during pregnancy - very sad. Maybe you could post your question on the Chat Forum, someone might know how to help. I could also give you Leslie's email address in ND. She knows alot about our horses. She has a palomino mare sired by Listo too.

That is just crazy to have all the studs and mares running together! From little I know Cindy wasnt in a good medical state of mind either.. So sad.. I dont even have a pic of Realita..

Thank you, Jan. I cannot take credit for breeding him. I bought him at 4 months old from Laura York in Canada. Laura gave him the name. I guess I will make an honest horse of him and get his paperwork in. I have all the stuff and just ordered a DNA kit, so he will be papered. Seems stupid on a gelding, but it won't get any cheaper, I guess. Sire is Juan Jose Favorito x Gray Barn Corveta. BTW - Fran Sullivan owns his sister and she is for sale. She is a dark grulla-ish with the same lovely body!

I'm not PH, but Rita's sire El Trebol is a grey son of Caruso de la Ate (full brother of Contrapunto). Rita's dam is chestnut, I believe...or MAYBE red dun, as she has Lunares in her lines. Rita is buckskin/dun that is greying. :D

Regarding ear markings several of our duns have very visibly striped ears with the tips dark, a light stripe and then another dark stripe. I'll try to get pictures of them. Dark edging is not particularly characteristic of duns. You also get frosting on true buckskins. The mane shading on a dun is quite different from frosting on a buckskin which is silver in color. Dun mane shading is usually several colors and doesn't run all the way down the mane. It is not silver in color but is a lighter shade of the base coat almost matching the body coat. It's also more prominant in certain parts of the the mane. To be sure you have shading and not just sun bleaching flip the mane over and look at the underside. That's where the true shading will show up. For example our grulla stallion has lavender gray shading in parts on his black mane that matches his coat color.

I'm not sure whether its considered primitive, as I have seen some young yearlings like this.. a long tuft of hair running under the belly like where a dorsal would be. You can often see in the duns/grullas the darker dorsal stripe running down thru the tail, which in effect the same thru the mane with lighter hairs top and bottom.
My filly Espirita is like this with about 2-3" of hair tuft down the middle of her underside; you can rather see the extra belly hair "mohawk" here at an angle behind her left front leg.

Lynn there are two sets of "dun ears" on the general chit chat board for you.
Those belly hairs are called a ventral mane and are pretty rare from what I read. I've never seen a picture of it. Really neat!!

Well, he ain't a Paso, but here's a picture of Pershing's Samule Adams, a mule I used to own. He was a weanling here. His mom was an appaloosa and his dad was a large standard jack.

Oooo... so many beautiful horses! I love everyone’s pictures. :D
Our stallion, Cielo Grande Cristobalito (“Cristo” for short), is a unique color. I’d say he’s a sooty dun, but I’m not that knowledgeable in the color department. He has more of a counter-shading then a dorsal stripe, but he does have dark marks at his withers. He is definitely not grullo, so we just call him a dun or sooty dun. The photos shown here are from last spring and he looks very scrawny. He is now a bit darker and has also visibly filled out. He is looking “grown-up.” I refuse to take my camera out into the below 0-degree weather to get some current photos, so these old ones will have to do for now.

This is Cristo’s first foal, Angelita de Cazadora, pictured as a yearling. We do not own her, but I just had to post her picture. She is also a unique color, similar to our stallion’s. Unlike his, her dorsal stripe is clearly visible. I suppose I would consider her a sooty dun.

thank you paso fan(but I think the reddish is sun bleaching the black hair). Yoda is a real charactar he is as exciting as his markings and the sun does make his mane which already has several colors look cool. Beth JJFavorito's dam, Fra-Lin Azahar is and Lindsay's first farm's first offspring she sold when she was a breeder for a business & sister of our stallion Leo.
Look on Lynn's web page for duns, --my mare, Ladybug, is on that page, the third group of pics down, about the dorsal stripes and she is the red dun with the blue halter on. Her grandparents are Favorito que tal and Plebeyo. Seems a number of duns come from Plebeyo's side. Stella has Ladybug's mom. :) The girl in my avatar is her baby, Lightningbug. She is 2 1/2 yrs. old and is a bay dun. I have to update my pics of them and will try to post later this week. Been a bit cold here the past few days lol. Ladybug will be 8yrs. old the end of March.
Everyone has such beautiful horses, aren't duns one of the more fascinating colors?

Lynn G., loved all the pics... you've got quite a dun private collection... I just bought 2 grulla mares from Kentucky that I gather you checked out, too. I have not seen them yet (except in bad pics) and they don't arrive for a couple more weeks. One is in foal and usually has grullas, so I may have a grulla baby for Spring pics time!
I have to see if I can figure out how to post pics here...

Okie, dokie....how's about a homozygous, smutty-dun, sooty-dun, grulla PINTO Paso Fino with secondary spots....heck I don't know WHAT color she is, but it's our Canela de Sangria, Santana del Cardo daughter.

But Tami Pinell's seen her in person and says she's a dun so I'll go with that...in the winter or when she's pregnant, she darkens to a deep grulla...WITH the mask...and a dorsal stripe just above her tail. ;-)

Dang it...see...Lynn THAT's the color Canela looks...she has the dark face, darker than her body spots...even down to the reddish highlights in her mane and the light ear hairs, but the dark, dark dorsal stripe. I STILL think she's more a grulla than a dun.

Carol...
Marietta has a bluish cast to her winter fuzzies hair; you don't see that in the photo with the sun hitting her.... Plus she has two grulla parents, which odds are will prduce grulla! Emperador did have a black offspring though when crossed on a gulla before I got him...not this mare though. He had a black colt this year crossed on a strong zebra dun.... ya just never know what color might pop out. The zebra dun's dam was grulla too.

A grulla is a dun - it the expression of the dun gene on a black horse. A grulla is a black dun horse, there are also bay duns and chestnut duns.
