Looking at getting one for my husband for Christmas. Anybody have any recommendations on them? Or know which ones to stay away from?

I have a Mio. It's mid priced and works fine. It won't get you there the fastest way -- and doesn't have some of the newest roads, but for what I wanted it for it's great.

When I'm pulling a trailer I don't want to be double checking on a map.

I just wish they had an "avoid the scary neighborhoods" option. I doubt any of them do. But once you know the area you can "avoid" certain roads and areas if you remember to.

I like that it's portable and pretty easy to use.

The most popular brand we used to sell at our marine supply business was Magellan. Not sure if it is the best but on an average we would sell 5 to 1 of the Magellans over other brands. But many companies have produced better technology since 1995 so check the web . just type in browser search GPS Systems.

Hope this helps

I purchased my Magellan on Black Friday and have been using it ever since...For the price I think it is a great buy...Should be able to pay for it ( $149.00) with the price of gas I will save on not getting lost.... not to mention the lack of the STRESS factor.

Could not be happier with it and the price was right.

I have a Garmin C 530 and I absolutely love it. Price approx 350. I bought mine off QVC and paid for it in 3 payments. It has the preloaded maps. Do not buy one without the preloaded maps. If you do, it is absolutely worthless, because then you have to buy the programs with the maps when in the end you could have saved yourself a few steps and time and just got the one with the maps anyway. I have had mine since 7/2007 and I absolutely love it. It has payed for itself 10 times over. It also has a detour feature that can reroute you around any traffic delays, it also tells you the closest gas stations, banks, atms, restaurants, local attractions, all kinds of stuff.

Everyone seems to like that one. It sure helps when your trail riding in the mountains too.

I like the Garmin. And the prices seem to be getting more reasonable too.
