Just got back with my son from the emergency room. He was in so much pain and we figured he had the flu again. Being a diabetic it seem like even though he gets the flue shot he still seems to get the flu at least twice a year. This time it is kidney stones. They did a scan and said he had three small ones and sent him home with pain meds. Anybody had these before? What is our night going to be like? Anyway advice on this? Thanks.

OOOOHHHH yea I've had one and hope I never have another. It lodged in the tube going to my bladder and they had to go UP and get it. Had to split my Uretha{??] tube and I wore a cather for 5 weeks. No fun I can tell you and the pains are sharp and strong.

Mr. E. just spent half a day in the ER for a kidney stone just before Christmas.
He said the pain was VERY BAD. He has had them before but this time even though stone was small it was very bad pain wise. They gave him pain medi. in the hospital and sent him home with more meds. He has had stones that they had to operate on before but this time was worse. It took him about three days before he was without pain. He tried to stop meds but when he did pain was still there so stone must of still been in duct. Restarted pain meds and stayed on them two more days. Not fun.

As you know, you should watch him very carefully.

My husband had to make two trips to ER (I thinks that is typical). Once they put a catheter in him do not let them remove it 'til they are SURE it is not needed. The hospital cauterized my husband, removed it, then want to do it again. NO GO for him.

Just watch him, if he starts hurting again (even minor pain) back to the ER you go.

Good luck

Just a reminder, from my experience, please do not tell him that old line about the "pain being worse than childbirth" when he is hurting. Trust me, he KNOWS it hurts very badly. I had driven all night to get home at 3 or 4 AM and a kidney stone woke me up at 5AM. My best wishes that the pain passes quickly.

Have him drink a lot of cranberry juice - and water ! Flush it out ;)
Hubby had one 20 years ago - and he was in hospital over night and sent home with pain meds - he passed that one - but, had one this July that had to be taken out - 5mm OUCH !
If they took ex-rays and sent him home - he may be in pain until he passes it - but he will know when it is gone - ;)
And YES ,guys - it "does" hurt as much as having a baby - I know two women that have done/had both ROFLAO
Hope he passes it soon -

I had a kidney stone last year - first trip to the ER was in an ambulance with paramedics giving pain meds....yep, the pain was THAT BAD! Worse than my appendicitis (drove myself) - I could barely seem to breathe, was throwing up.....made my Mom turn around on the way to the ER and had her stop at the Life Flight helicoptor base.........

2nd trip to the ER (couple hours later - misdiagnosis the 1st trip) - Michael took me, they finally did a CT scan and found the stone - it was working its' way out so pain meds and off to home I went.....after they gave me a pain med I am allergic to (dilaudid - sp?).....

Anyway - as was said - LOTS of fluids, cranberry juice is good, and my Urologist also said LEMONS - lemon juice (the REAL KIND)......in fact I have another follow-up visit today that hubby forgot to remind me about until last night!

I LOVE LOVE LOVE your urologist! I might be killing my liver, but I'm saving my kidneys!!!! :jump: No stones for me! YIPPEEE!!!!

...as an aside, Andrea I feel for your son. Had a friend that had to pass 3 stones. It took two days, lots of drugs, and she was out of it for the entire time. Maybe I should start mixing her drinks!!!

apple juice and hydrangea root is supposed to disolve them.

Glad he had a quiet night, hope it stays that way. The best thing I can can say is when it's over it really is over. Suddenly, it just doesn't hurt that bad anymore. Good luck, sorry you have to go through this.
