For those who are reading these threads, please do not misunderstand the terminology being used here when it is being used incorrectly in order to provoke. The term penco or chungo would not be used to describe a horse that is a good horse but does not show and is ridden mostly on the trails or as a working horse. To call your trail horse a penco is very insulting. Unless of course he is a penco in which case he should never be bred and is not a good example of Paso Fino or any horse for that matter for any use. Some on here have tried to imply that if a horse is not shown that it is considered in the native countries to be not a good horse. This is about as far from the truth as can be. Paso Finos in their native countries are looked at as individuals and judged on their individual strengths and weaknesses. They don't need the shows to tell them what a good horse is. They instead look at the horse to determine this. What a concept!!! There have been many great produicers, especially mares, who never had show careers. They are not called pencos and if you called them pencos you may need to run very quickly back to wherever you came from.

Now, that can be understood.
If one had a work horse & used it for trail, work & show would it still be pencos? Or are they catagorized & used for specific jobs?

"If one had a work horse & used it for trail, work & show would it still be pencos? Or are they catagorized & used for specific jobs?"
I'll try to answer the way I understand this. If this hypothetical horse had enough good paso fino characteristics to be considered a good example of the breed, for instance, it can paso fino at times when asked, it has brios, it has a paso fino type conformation though it can be a little flawed it still not unsound or extremely unattractive, anyway, enough of the bundle of things that make a paso fino, and a good example of one, then it matters not its destination.
The way I understand it, a penco describes a less than desireable example of the breed, and it really doesn't mean whether it saw the show ring or not. In my opinion, the only real reason to think about whether your horse is or isn't a penco is when you want to breed, and whether you intend to breed to sell to a market. Or if you want to show in breed shows. Not saying you can't, but you should save your money, since the breed show is supposed to showcase the ideals of the breed.
The problem is though, there isn't as much a market for a bad example as a good one. The problem is many people don't seem to want to learn what a good example is.
I hope I'm close to understanding.

Exactly. The USE of the paso fino has no bearing on whether or not it is a "penco". The paso fino may be used to haul coal back and forth in the mines and still not be a penco.
AND You can have a horse you value highly for its personality or willingness or good nature that is pretty much a penco to look at anyway. It might be jugheaded, crooked legged, rafter hipped, rawboned and just plain ugly and worth it's weight in gold. But it just wouldn't be considered a "good paso fino" but you wouldn't sell it for all the money in the world either.
Another thing - just because a paso fino is shown doesn't mean it isn't a penco. I've seen some pretty ugly, not good examples of the breed in shows. But again they might be real sweethearts worth their weight in gold.
And just because a paso fino IS show quality does not mean the owner WANTS to show it and even if it's never shown it is NOT a penco.
And there are paso finos that really aren't show quality just because they don't LIKE shows or just aren't flashy who are still not pencos.
A penco is another way of saying "your horse is a piece of manure". Very insulting. Although like any insult it can be used playfully when the person doesn't really mean it.
