I guess I learned not to throw water on a kitchen fire many years ago, but doesn't hurt to be reminded. Sometimes in the heat of the moment, one forgets just what to do.

It's been so long since fire-safety day in high school that I had completely forgotten that you don't put a grease fire out with water. Good grief, Carol, posting that video was a life saver. :flag: Way to go!

You can also use flour or baking soda to smother a fire - or if you can get the lid on ,while wearing an oven mitt . The premise is to cut off the oxygen to the fire .
I had never heard about using the wet cloth! Looks like it would work .
Question - how many of you have fire extinguishers in the kitchen, and your car ? I have both - also in our greenhouse - we do store hay we are using in there during the winter ,and in the garage ;)

Also salt may be thrown on a grease fire.
And yes, living in a 73 year old plus house, a fire extinguisher was the first thing I bought...and I also have one in EACH of my two barns...ESPECIALLY the haybarn!!

As a firefighter - I can't condone the video although the overall message is a good one - we actually saw this at work and commented on it......
While it is a decent idea to use a wet cloth - how many people are going to think to wring it out well enough before putting it on a pot.....
It is still a better idea to just COVER the pot (always keep a lid handy when cooking, not packed away in a cupboard).....turn the heat off and CALL THE FIRE DEPARTMENT! Even if the fire appears 'out' - do NOT remove the cover - or try to move the pot. It is all too easy for grease especially to reignite, or for heat to come through pot holders causing you to drop the pan..........

I live in a mobile home, so I have one in every room and check them every time I dust. Overkill? Not. Learned to use one at work, too. The state let the office buy one just to train us. A co-worker is a volunteer fire fighter! Bless all you fire fighters - you don't get anything like the praise you deserve.
Query: Salt? Perhaps you plan on later eating whatever it was that burned?? Does it put the fire out?
ANd thanks for the hint about a lid - I'll do that from now on!
