"A widowed waitress sometimes strugling to make ends meet..." Really needs a broken down race horse. And she says he cannot race any more but she wants to JUMP him? Excuse me? And the media is playing this up as a feel good story. I personally do not feel quite so good now.

Yup, that was my interpretation too. They are saying that the guy was generous. Yeah right, he was dumping his lame horse on someone that does not know better.

Mel, I was sent that story e-mail yesterday, and funny, because that is exactly what I thought too, the horse was being (creatively) pawned off on this sweet lady.

I'm telling everyone. Lock your corral gates. ...not so much to keep your horses getting out, but to keep people from dumping their horses INTO your corrals!

It's getting so bad...my farrier told me this week that he was at a seminar or something and a local vet said they estimate more than 200 horses - that they know of - who are on the verge of needing an agency to step in and help them out. I understand that two horses in my neighborhood just died of neglect/starvation last week and one more on the same farm is in trouble. Why are people still breeding at all? Either horses, dogs or cats? I must be naive because I just don't get it.

Our Back Country Horsemen chapter sent out a statewide plea to people NOT to breed their horses. I wish all the breed organizations would do the same, not that THAT is likely to happen.

There are a number of reasons this is happening right now, but the one fact that has to sink in is that the number of available horses needs to reduce down to the supply of people purchasing horses.

Heidi has a point. My vet told me of several ranchers who have found horses in their fields. They are also being released on the range land.

My vet was out today to do coggins & shots. She stated in our area the breeding has really slowed down. No many babies expected from last years breedings either.

That is good news.
