I am going to try to insert photos of my yearling filly - Margarita del Viento CGF. Her birthday was 4/16 so she is just a year now. Already as tall as her mom (but still uneven)!! She is a real pistol - not a pocket pony by an means but does love to be worked with a lot. She is smart and is learning fast (bad and good habits!!). :) She really did get the hair gene but I am sorta bummed that she is also showing some white ticking in her spring coat along the flanks....her mom is grey and we knew it would be 50-50. Guess she is headed that way too....

Lovely, lovely filly...I like the condition you're keeping her in...not too skinny, and not too fat! :)

Thanks Carol! Luckily she is not a food hound and prefers pasture/hay to her TC Growth (actually I think she just prefers not to be in the stall alone so would rather be with the others than eat!). Any suggestions on keeping her mane and tail black??? They seem to be getting red and I have never had a horse this dark before!

Well...you can rub sunscreen into her mane and tail...or they make horse products that have sunscreen in them but they're more pricey than just buying the human products. Don't get them in her eyes though.
Me...I just consider it one of the drawbacks of living in the Sunbelt. :)

What a pretty girl!
Vetrolin makes a mane and tail sunscreen but if you really want to keep it black it's easier to braid it or roll it after you put the sunscreen on. The sunscreen works fairly well though. Just don't skimp on it and put it on regularly. There are also shampoos that enhance black that you can use before you put on the sunscreen.

Thanks MGs - I might have some Vetrolin around here - just have to find the time to get outside more often (I feel guilty if I am out with the horses and not with my 9mo old baby - wouldn't be so bad if I wasn't working and commuting)!
She is SO beautiful!! I have a red dun coming two y/o filly built so much like her.Her mom is gray as well and it's looking like i'll be waiting to see if Gracie is going to.Not a single sign yet though.Your friend,Moniece

Thanks Moniece! So do you want your filly to stay red dun? I love that color!!! I need to take better pictures of Margarita - you can't tell from these that she has a lovely headset - she was fighting to get to the luscious green grass!!! Her mom's headset is low and almost QH-like so I am pleased that the filly got the better angulation from her sire.

Is the ticking just in the flank area? If so I would not count her grey just yet...Harry has ticking there too.

Hi Cristy,
There is a fair amount all along the underbelly, flanks and maybe even the muzzle. I will try to check better ths weekend (she is almost done shedding). I do remember Harry having ticking or even some spots in his flanks??? I wondered if he was sabino with minimal expression when I saw the spots (Zona wasn't sure either).
Is it possible robicano maybe since the ticking isn't at the tail head or around the eyes first?I am asking so I can learn more.As for my girl,i'll be curious to see if she ends up turning but since I love greys so much i'll be tickled either way.I'll try and post some yearling pics of her so you can see her :-)Your friend,Mo
