At the beginning of this year we got a call from Julio Ortega that he had found a mare that I might be interested in. The story was that she had been started under saddle as a 3 y/o but the owner was unable to pay for further training. The filly was thrown out to pasture for the last two years and was now just turning five years old. I expressed my doubt that I would want her, due to her being so far behind in her training, but I thought she was worth looking at due to her bloodlines. (Vitral X Perdiz de Lusitania a top ten mare out of Capitan.)
I sent Nelson our trainer to evaluate her. After a couple of rides he thought she was naturally gaited and quick but did not seem to know a whole lot. We agreed to to bring her to our farm and if we liked her we would buy her. On her way home while on the interstate the trailer hitch pin for the two horse bumper pull trailer broke and the trailer cart wheeled down the interstate into the grassy median and was completely totaled. It took about an hour for the rescue workers to get the horse out of the trailer using a jaws of life device. The mare meanwhile stayed completely calm and walked right out and into an awaiting trailer.
The mare had a bloody and bruised nose and multiple scrapes and bruises but was otherwise fine. Ten days later Nelson started riding the mare and three days after that he called me to the barn all excited telling me that we should buy this mare. The following video was taken about six weeks later into her training
