View Full Version : Mila Update

For those of you who might be interested in how little Miss Mila is doing -- she's reached the "Please get this thing out of me!" stage. Her udder is finally showing some more progress over the last two days, although not quite ready yet. And she's constantly poking at her side like she's being kicked. She's also playing with my head a bit: while I was taking these photos this afternoon, she suddenly went down on her front knees, rolled onto her side -- then got up, shook herself, and went back to nibbling hay.

Teats are facing forward...she's got a filly in her!!!

From all the predictions I've seen online, the "teats forward means a filly" formula seems to be accurate about 50% of the time, lol.

On the other hand, Danesa's teats were clearly pointing down before she had Capri . . . so maybe the odds will be in my favor this time.

Do the filly dance again, Carol!!!!!

Well, let's just say that I'm glad Mila is holding up better than I am.

Dance, Carol, dance.

So are you ready to give me a "date" prediction yet, Terry?

She's at 334 days right now.

By Monday..... her mother went early....twice.

Carol Nelson
05-10-2008, 02:12 AM
I agree with Terry, not because her mother did, but because she's a maiden. But remember, Vicki...Bunny stayed at that stage for what...three weeks????
Good luck...I am SOOOOO glad it's over....

I'm a dancin',....I'm a dancin'.... ;)

Actually, I'd be watching her pretty close...now that I think about it...you're only about six days to term....I can count on two hands the number of maidens I had deliver two to three weeks early.

Mila's mother went early when she was a maiden mare, I owned her for her first two foals....

HOW IS Mila today?

She's about the same. Her nipples might be a little more developed, but not much.

I'm hoping she won't "pull a Bunny" on me. If so, it's going to be a long three or four weeks.

You should be hoping that she DOES pull a bunny on you. Bunny did not look like this until the pictures that were posted the day before she foaled. She certainily did not look like this when the first set of pics were posted which was, if I remember correctly, about a week and a half before she foaled. I will say the same thing that I said to Carol when Bunny looked like this, don't go to sleep any more.

This was Chinook about 9 hours before she foaled. Notice the very white tip on her udder. One really good indicator.

Danesa dripped for about 12 hours before she foaled.

Mila's nipples look about at full strut now, but no wax yet.

BeeGee never waxed. It drops off of a lot of them. But if you very gently squeeze a tiny sample you can really see the white color when the calcium levels spike.

Hehehe...Vicki...

Well . . . Mila is only at 337 days, so I'm not really too stressed out yet. I'd rather her go to full term and have a healthy foal than deliver too early and have a sickly one.

On the other hand, if two weeks from now, we're still working on "Bunny -- The Sequel," I'll probably be a lot more stressed than you were.

Carol Nelson
05-13-2008, 03:19 AM
Hey, don't even worry. 337 days IS considered term...she's fine. Good luck, sweetie...I'll be rootin' for you and just know that most likely everything will turn out ok.

My sources say 342 and all of our guys have been really close to this time but 5 days early sure shouldn't cause any problems.

Carol Nelson
05-13-2008, 04:19 AM
Technically, 340 days is a term pregnancy. But anything after 320 days can be considered ok...I've had babies born at 318 days with no problems. I always breathe a little sigh of relief when my mares make it to the 320th day.

Dear Mom,

You know that I adore you, but I'll have this baby when I darn well please.

Vicki did this to me, so it's only fair that I make her suffer for a few days.

Love and skritches,

Mila

Before anyone asks: nope, no baby YET.

She still looks pretty much the same as when I took those photos last Friday . . . except even fuller in the udder and even "struttier" nipples. No wax, though.

Today is day 339 -- and it's also Capri's second birthday. It would be a real coincidence if Mila's foal and Danesa's foal shared a birthday.

Carol Nelson

Well, Vicki....anything yet??? ;)

Well, Vicki....anything yet??? ;)

Yeah . . . she's driving me completely insane . . . is that something?

Seriously, I was down at the barn, doing evening chores today. The last thing I do is pellets. I gave Mila hers first, then went to give out the others. Came back to pick up Mila's "empty" feeder -- and she hadn't eaten them. Completely unusual for her -- she hasn't been eating a lot of hay, but she has never left her pellets. Where is she? In her stall, pawing and pawing and pawing at the straw.

This is about 6:10 pm. I stand there and watch her paw. Then she stops, and starts moving her rear end up and down in ever deepening squats. Then she lays down on her side, fully down, stretched out as far as she can stretch . . . and just lays there for, like, ten minutes, making little movements like she's straining. Okay, Vicki thinks, there's been no wax -- but this must be IT!

Nope, she lays there but nothing happens. No water breaking . . . no evidence of foaling. Then she gets up (with a bit of a struggle -- she is rather round in the middle) and stands still for another five or ten minutes . . . then she poops . . . then she goes out and starts eating hay.

That was over three hours ago. I've been watching her ever since. Stand a little . . . eat a little . . . drink a little . . . flick her tail a LOT (you know . . . the up and down flicking that, according to Blessed Are the Brood Mares, means she's about to foal). But nothing else. And no, in case you're worried, she's acting "normal uncomfortable" but not stressed or in pain.

Husband is down there now to give me a short break. Have to go back to watching her.

Wow...I saw this message at about 11:45 my time (yeah, I stay up late) and thought you were announcing a birth. Vicki, I think it is imminent though. That sounds like labor to me. If she continues to do that, call your vet...she might be having some problems.
Don't mean to scare you, sincerely! Just would like you to get a professional's opinion.
Good luck....I'll be watching!! :)

PasoVicki
05-15-2008, 06:49 AM
I did call the vet. Sorry, should have mentioned that. He said she's in the first stage of labor . . . which can last up to three days.

PasoVicki

She had a few more episodes of lying down and "straining" during the night -- but the vet said everything she's doing is normal as long as (1) her water doesn't break (with no more progress) and (2) she has periods of quiet (eating, etc.) between the episodes of lying down.

If this stage of labor takes three full days, it's going to be a LONG three days.

She's quietly eating hay at the moment.

After a long, hot day of . . . nothing -- we're finally making a little progress. We have WAX. Not huge amounts of wax, but very definitely wax.

Another long night ahead.

Carol Nelson
05-16-2008, 05:30 AM
Vicki...Bunny had minimal amount of wax. Like dots. I saw wax at 6:30 a.m., baby was born at 7:50. So...it may not be such a long night...LOL.
Terry and I will be monitoring from my desk....she'll be here in the morning. Good luck and God bless!!
