Nicole is now able to have me post the details of her filly's status. She's pretty sure the filly will make it, although her initial prognosis was 40%. It's up around 60%+ tonight. She was born Friday morning.

The first night she made a 40 minute trip to the vet in the cab of Nicole's truck for fluids, antibiotics, colostrum, and dextrose. Her core temp was 92° by the time they arrived at the vet's.

Nicole slept with her on a cot with a quilt to try to keep her warm the rest of the night and so she could get her up to nurse every hour or so.

The next afternoon, Leah accidentally stepped on the filly's back leg - a clean break, but an emergency trip by the vet to apply a cast.

The filly is bright , alert, and almost strong enough to get up on her own tonight. She is nursing well. Prospects are good as the vet gave her a 60% chance of survival yesterday, and she is doing even better today.

Those of you who know Nicole and Heath's Egyptian Pharoah hound "Jinx"... the filly is wearing Jinx's winter coat.

From the ground to the top of her head, she's a mere 38" tall....

Although she is not yet out of the woods, her prospects are better than even odds tonight.

What was the filly's problem? She is so tiny.
Praying that she pulls through ok...what a rough start!

Basically she was a 12 month foal who was born almost as if she were a preemie. She is still not able to get up on her own, but is giving it her best effort. Probably another day or two, she should be up on her own. She is nursing well now and able to stand without assistance for periods of time.

Basically she was a 12 month foal who was born almost as if she were a preemie.

Mila was a full term foal who was born tiny and underdeveloped like that -- due to an incompletely attached placenta.

If you can reach Terry Wallace, she can tell you what she needed to do for Mila to help her pull through. It might help.

Best of luck to the little filly.

Oh what cute little filly! I love the jacket. It's cold here tonight comparatively.

This one is small but doesn't look as preemie as Mila did. They always say the first 24 hours are the really important ones. If they go downhill during that time things don't look good. If they improve the odds go up a lot.

SO GET STRONG AND HEALTHY REALLY QUICKLY! WE LOVE YOU!!

Hang in there Nicole - she looks very happy and alert that means a LOT!!

Was this leah's first foal? Pistachio was a first and really tiny - so small we had to hold him up to suckle and Chinook's only 13 2 and large barreled - but after we held him up for his first two meals he was fine even though he had to stand on tiptoe to reach. First foals are small quite frequently but they catch up. By the time they were 11 months old he and Brilliant were pretty much the same size even though Brilliant was much taller when born.

She looks fully developed - just small.

Thanks Sandy for posting for me I have computer trouble and can only be on a small amount of time.

Barring anything else happening I think we are on the road to recovery but its slow going I help set her up every 2 hr to nurse and Leah milk streams out the filly looks like she is drinking from a fountain very funny

She has taken everything in stride and very agreeable even though she is small she is letting me know her thought on the med with pinned ears and wrinkled nose at the bad tasting meds, and with her curly tipped ears you can't help but laugh

She is on bute for pain(just a drop),tribussin for antibiotics, a glycols high vitamin energy serum for vitamins and minerals and sugar,

Other than that she's on her own and was trying to run/hobble laps in the stall her other bad leg is just a little swollen so will be soaking that and putting absorbin on

Leah is doing fine this is not her first foal she has had 2 others for us that were fine she had a still born 4yrs ago and we had been trying to get a viable foal since then this is that foal and this will be Leah’s last foal she is 19yr not to old but with her history we feel it is just best on all accounts,

Time for baby check, I will try to keep you up dated and should have more pix in a few days

I hope your new filly recovers quickly and all things return to more normal for you. How crazy Jinx's coat fits her, wow!

Nicole is still having problems with reliable internet, so here's today's update ...

The filly is still very bright and alert. And the new milestone is that she is now able to get up on her own... She is able to find the milk bar easily. However, the mare has so much milk, Nicole says it's squirting her in the face and it looks like the filly is trying to drink out of a water fountain. Hopefully, now that she can get up on her own, she'll be nursing more often and the milk situation will work itself out.

Nicole said she is still on several meds - which she dislikes - and makes some really funny faces and wrinkles up her nose... Nothing like an opinionated mare - even if she is tiny, tiny, tiny!

The filly is starting to move around her stall, so things are looking even better - although it will be a while before she gets to go out. The cast is scheduled to be re-evaluated in about 2 weeks.
