View Full Version : Guess who I rode this weekend?

First off, I have to say that Don Primrose is fabulous as well as Shaun and I owe them a huge THANK YOU! and I hope I spelled Shaun right.

Kevin and I had our lovely trip to Pine Mountain and Callaway Gardens this weekend. The best part of the entire trip was when we dropped by Don's to visit Spirit. Don put me on Spirit bareback with a halter and leadline and had us go around the ring. That was interesting since I came to realize that I need to work on riding bareback because I was entirely too tense while trying to keep my balance. After that, I got to ride with my beloved saddle. That was better, but my lack of balance bareback still bothers me! Either way, the really important part was that Spirit was a trooper for the whole thing and was great. Now, for the worst part...
I suck at riding a trotting horse! Yup, I am one of those people who rides gaited horses and can't ride a regular horse at a trot to save my life. Imagine a portly lady off balance, flailing in the saddle and grunting with every stride. That is me riding Spirit at a trot. But, despite all of this Spirit still behaved very well and was patient with me. Of course, if he had a little thought cloud above his head while he was trotting I would have hated to see what it contained.

The bonus of the trip was yesterday, we stopped back by on our way home and went for a trail ride. Shaun started on Spirit and I rode a cute little grey paso mare that I dubbed Lagerstroemia indica 'Petite Snow'. Part of the way through the ride, we switched and Spirit was great. He never gave a hint of trouble until the very end of the ride. He was excited to get back to the barn and I was not letting him go past a walk. I was holding him back too hard and he lunged a bit. Nothing bad, but a reminder that I need to be soft when I am riding him. He is very light and responds nicely and I ride like Thor wielding his hammer. All temper and heavy handedness. So, biggest lesson of the weekend. I need to go take some lessons! Best part of the weekend...I am actually looking forward to bringing Spirit home and taking him out on the trails at a nice smooth walk.;)

Here is the video - Notice, no trotting footage. I threatened Kevin with terrible things if he took any.:)

I for one am very impressed he went into that "lake" in the big pen, that is some soft sticky mud my horses would try to avoid. Interesting how Spirit morphs into a fino gelding near the end...glad it went so well.

Actually.... that is one extraoridinary fino gelding she is riding at the end. I will see what video I have and will post it. Incredibly, we managed to forget _all_ the cell phones, video cams, _and_ still cameras when we took the horses out for the trail ride yesterday... :(

Spirit did great and Mel only mumbled a little when we got into a corto and Spirit had to trot...

Oh Mel, that is so great that Spirit is well on his way to becoming a good horse for you.

Yeah Spirit and Mel! I am glad to hear things are working out for you both. He is a beauty (even if he does trot!).

Good for you Mel! I am so happy to hear Spirit is doing well.

You do realize that Sandy & Gregg have now seen both of us ride a trotting horse? Lucky for us neither of them EVER remembers a camera:biggrin:

BTW, I resemble this remark:

PS: I bet we are NOT alone:rolleyes:

You do realize that Sandy & Gregg have now seen both of us ride a trotting horse? Lucky for us neither of them EVER remembers a camera:biggrin:What's _really_ bad is that I took _2_ cameras (a still and a video) over there - PLUS 2 camera phones and took none of the 4 with us on the trail ride..... How bad is that??? Do NOT answer that question! :v:

However - I _do_ have video of Shaun riding the gray, Spirit, and Tara. Greg riding the gray and maybe Tara. Me riding... ha! Not a chance! :v:

Now to get those videos downloaded.... heh-heh-heh.......

If you notice, the rides we have gone on with Sandy & Gregg there are no action shots of me trotting? I usually remember a camera.

I actually threatened them with harm if they spoke of Brat, trotting or my meager attempts to keep her in a canter:v:

It is rather humbling for your brain to remember how to trot, but your body no longer is able to do it with any grace of finesse

I think this is a fitting illustration of how the trotting went...

Spirit IS gorgeous and he looks so relaxed! Looks like you have a keeper there! So here's your routine - your ride Spirit first until you're exhausted - maybe ten minutes :v: and then you get on Phoebe and ride for a couple of hours, and then go dancing:biggrin:

Now WHO IS THE GREY GELDING?? Pedigree, owner etc. He is really good! Does he have a largo??

Spirit is looking good and doing really well.

BUT... I WANT that little grey horse something awful. He is just cool.

Exactly, he is very "cool." He can't wait to fino, when I was riding him (did I mention that?;-) he was so relaxed in fino he wasn't breathing as hard as he was in a corto. Just amazing. Stand still in fino, back in fino, sidepass in fino...he is really something. And not little, he's bigger than my 14.2 900lb gelding.
But I still can't tell you who he is.
