Buck's new owner just told me that he has coccidia from injesting chicken manure in his former home. Now I'm worried about my guys. Anyone know if they could have caught it from Buck? I will call my vet tomorrow, just wanted to know what you all know about it.

Barb -see your avatar? That is what Buck would be doing if he really had coccidia (sp?). It is NASTY and horses get isolated at hospitals so they can spew diarrhea all over the techs at the most inopportune times like when yer getting the temperature...

IOW if he is not spewing poo, you are fine and so are your others.

Well, Buck wasn't doing that when he was here...don't know what he's been doing at her place.

I had a horse with coccidia...was pastured days with 3 others at the time. Stalled at night. He was the only one affected. I've always had chickens, ducks, and geese that free range and leave their droppings around the barn and pasture, but I blamed the wild barn birds that poop everywhere..sometimes hitting the water buckets.

Cam, that's a lovely picture on your avatar. Can you post a larger one and tell us about the horse?

Here's a link for a larger more recent pic. (I hope) I'm not quite computer savvy enough to resize and post photos. That will be another winter project. Pic is of an impromptu ride early this month. This is Amigo del Paso Maine-ia (I didn't name him) a 10 y/o gelding 14.2 hh. I've had him since he was a yearling. If you are into bloodlines you can look him up on paso pedigree. His barn name is Stupid Fat Boy  He's not really stupid, just annoying sometimes and gets chubby because he's a faster eater and more aggressive than his companions. The avatar picture is from this past summer at trainers. That's her behind him in the photo. I have a short video of him as well but it takes forever to send via email. Some day I will move beyond a dial up connection. (geez, just uploading 1 pic to photobucket takes 20+ minutes) Thanks for asking about my boy! I enjoy the pics and stories about your critters.

He's a beautiful boy! And the scenery is spectacular. I have never been to Maine, but it is on my list of places I want to go! I hear it is a very beautiful state~!

I am gonna have to tell my boarder about this...

Come on up anytime Pasomom....every season has its fine points (except maybe mud season) Everything is fresh in the spring (as soon as the mud dries up), green in the summer, crisp and colorful in the fall, and pristine in the winter. You can visit the coast, the mountains, or even a small desert! Take your pick or stay long enough to see it all. ;-)
Pasofan, I've had equines and barnyard fowl co-habitating for 12 yrs with only one brief coccidia problem with one horse ( and I truely believe it was due to wild birds) so I'd say the odds are pretty good there won't be a problem. Those guinea hens are supposed to be good at keeping the bug population down.

I've kept free range banties for four years now. We make sure they can't roost over water or food buckets (prevent contamination). We always seem have less fly problems than our horsey neighbors without freeranging fowl. I like the little eggs, too.

Our stallion actually enjoys the companionship of the chickens. He will play with them sometimes. They seek out his stall with their newborn chicks to nest every evening and stay protected against midnight marauders.
