Phoebe and I went out with some friends from work Saturday night and tried ranch sorting. The way it works is that you have two pens like a number eight with an opening in the middle so that the two pens connect. There are cows numbered 1-9 in one side and one blank cow. The object is for two riders to enter and move the cows in numerical order from one pen to the other. You will be told what number to start with.
I watched during the money rounds and then Phoebe and I rode in the practice rounds with some of my guy friends from work. Phoebe did OK in that she enjoyed sorting and chasing cows. The only problem is that she lacked ooompf. The QH people were laughing at my sluggish horse. They recommended that I get some spurs to get her attention. You would have thought she was out for a stroll in the park. I know she is a laid back horse but come on... I think a couple of them were wondering what happened to the fiery Paso Finos that they had heard about. We did manage to move 4 cows over to the other successfully and did a few good blocks when we were working the opening. Spirit gets to go next time.
I also learned that Phoebe can make friends very quickly. During the 40 minute ride over, she decided that Cherokee (my friend's paint) was her bestest friend ever. While we were watching between rounds, she spent most of the time nuzzling his neck and fixing his mane. She also talked to him the entire time he was in the ring. Good grief! Surely she could find something better than a big ole paint horse to fall in love with!
Since it was a night time event, we did not get many good pics. Here are the ones that kinda showed up. Did it look like we were having fun????:v:
