That's terrible. I thought it was minimal but it's serious if it puts you in ICU.

Yeah, I read the article, he's in ICU but in stable condition.

Apparently it was the victim's fault he was shot. Shouldn't have been walking where Cheney was shooting. (kind of like the tree shouldn't have been planted where the drunk was driving ;-) ) The owner of the ranch said this kind of accident was to be expected with quail hunting  . Must be a Texan thing...in the west people are taught to make sure their target is clear before pulling the trigger. My family and extended family has hunted upland game for years and not managed to shoot one single person. Not saying that accidents don't happen in the west...just that around here, it is always the shooter's fault.

I used to work at Holland & Holland a shotgun manufacturer in London, and when the Mg. Dir went to Texas he brought back slides, and showed a big coop in the middle from which they let all the birds go and everyone started shooting.... at least that is the way he described it, after a few cocktails. I recall that everyone was amazed that no one was hurt.

Hey...you ever been bird hunting??? It's like taking your life in your hands! Bird shot flying everywhere...I don't go there anymore!

FL natives - at least our family - look where they shoot also. They are fanatics on safety and won't even hunt on public lands. They join hunt clubs with strict rules and teach their kids gun safety from birth. And you don't shoot until you can see things are clear!

You need the ENTIRE story. Cheney was completely justified, that old man was hiding weapons of mass destruction hidden beneath his clothing..

I wonder if he loses his status as a "safe" hunter

Yes...we used to hunt all the time, from September through January. One of the cardinal rules is to make sure your target is clear before you fire. You have to trust everyone in your party, that they won't shoot you or your dog(s). There is no excuse for shooting someone - ever.

I haven't hunted quail in a few years. When I did hunt it was a hard and fast rule that everyone stayed in line, no lagging back. It was also understood that I only shoot at birds in my lane of fire. The same went for everyone. Once the bird got beyond my firing lane it belonged to the next person.

I have come closer to getting shot deer hunting than bird hunting. For many years we hunted deer with dogs and drivers. I was usually the driver, the one pushing the deer toward the standers. I can remember many times hearing shot going through the trees over my head or near by. It was mostly buckshot. It is amazing how fast you can get behind a tree or on the ground. We didn't usually let standers use rifles on drives. We thought that would be too dangerous.

I no longer hunt with dogs. Hopefully it is safer now.

Hey...you ever been bird hunting??? It's like taking your life in your hands! Bird shot flying everywhere...I don't go there anymore!

I bird hunt every day from the end of october till the end of Jan. Just go back from quail hunting in Ok. There should never be shot flying everywhere, you should never shoot behind. A few thing I don't understand about this are (well, beyond the fact that someone was shot) the guy was coming up from retrieving a bird from tall grass, you use dogs to hunt quail, and the dog should find and retrieve dead birds. And the tall grass thing? I was just in OK, and there was no cover taller then 8 inches anywhere! The only way I could see this happening is they had birds flush and fly behind, he swung behind and pulled the trigger, two major fups. I am sure more detials will come out.
All of that said, I guide a lot of people I don't know and you always, always go over the rules before hand, I don't care if they shoot every day of there live, I tell them what my rules are. In 12 years of this, I have never had anyone with me or in my party get shot, nor any of my freinds that hunt. I hope this man is OK, doesn't lose an eye, bird shot at30 yards can blow a pretty good hole in a person.

Well, quail hunting is safer than duck hunting for sure, you typically just walk along and when the quail are flushed and fly up, they shoot them. I never shot...I have a real aversion to killing anything...but I would tag along.
But if you've ever been in a duck blind, man, it is crazy...half a dozen guys in a hole in the ground, and when a duck flies over they all stand up and shoot...boy, I can sure see where someone could shoot another guy in the head easily...whether on purpose or by accident.
I just sat on a can and covered my head and my ears with my arms.

I spend many hours in duck and goose blinds, one of them is a 12 seater. I can not think of anyway possible to shoot someone else. Unless, of course you are trying to! The fronts open up as the birds come in and there are only two ways to shoot, up and straight ahead.

Now this am I hear neither man had purchased their tx habitat stamps?! How as VP of a country, a man with a ton of money do this? I will not believe he did not know he was supposed to , just a blatent disregard for the law.

Oh...so NOW we know why they didn't report it for 20 hours! ;-)

In all fairness, I think is was not reported in a timely manner because after all, it was only an attorney that got shot. Up here in NY to report shooting an attorney is like reporting shooting a woodchuck. Who bothers??

USA Today did a poll...Cheney's approval rating went up 92% when the public found out he'd shot a lawyer.

He hit the lawyer in the face...he'll be okay because he can put forward his other face.
