DULUTH, Minn. (AP) - Authorities were considering charges against a man who struck a horse while riding his snowmobile, according to the St. Louis County Sheriff's Department.
The 46-year-old man was riding his snowmobile on a township road Feb. 5 when he struck the horse from behind, according to a sheriff's report. A 22-year-old woman who was riding the horse apparently suffered minor injuries and the snowmobile driver was taken to a hospital. The horse was euthanized.
The snowmobile driver and the horseback rider are both from Grand Lake Township.
Charges were pending the results of a blood-alcohol content test, the report said.

I hope they throw the book at the man -- alcohol or not! How the hell do you "accidentally" hit a horse unless you are either drunk or completely careless? That poor girl! That poor, trusting horse! Makes me want to throw up ... or cry. Dunno which.
We have the "Canada Trail" up here. It is designed to go from one side of the country to the other, with branches heading north and south. People across the country are asked to help finance its completion. Originally it was specifically for horses, foot traffic and bicyclers. Then the wealthy snowmobile and ATV associations got involved. I will NOT help finance it now. I WAS up for it. Not now.

That's so sad. As both a snowmobiler and horselover I understand both parties need to be vigilant and safe. I share my horse trails with sleds and while most are very considerate, there are some drunk SOB's out there. The girl must be heartbroken.

That is sad...I also hope they throw the book at him. I know just how that girl feels. My childhood pony was killed by a drunk driver - he was so drunk he didn't even apply the brakes for 150 feet past where he hit her. He only braked because he couldn't see out of his windshield (her stomach contents were all over it). Nothing happened to him...he wasn't even cited for DUI.
Things have changed since then...so hopefully he will pay fully. Just nothing will bring her horse back.

Sooo sad, Sooo stupid. Are there laws in place for operating vehicles, other than cars, under the influence in your state? I sure hope they nail his @ss to the wall!
An old farmer here was arrested and jailed years ago for driving his old tractor under the influence. Another was hauled in for riding his horse drunk in the local Christmas parade
No one was hurt in these incidents, but it could have been worse
Meanwhile, a girl has lost her best buddy. Can't never get him back
STUPID, STUPID PEOPLE!!!!!!

Little more detail on the incident.. still dont know about the charges yet..
Horse vs. Snowmobile
A woman is mourning the death of her horse a week after an accident. She was riding it when it was struck by a snowmobiler. Hannah Knapp, a 22-year old Saginaw woman, took her 8-year old horse Milo, for a ride, when a snowmobile came from out of nowhere. Hannah heard the sounds of the snowmobile, so she looked behind to see how close it was, but never imagined just seconds later it would drive into her and the horse. Hannah wishes the snowmobiler had not been drinking because she says the accident wouldn’t have happened and her horse wouldn't have died. The snowmobiler, 46-year old Timothy Peterson rode up behind the horse and crashed into its back legs. Hannah was thrown from the horse and Peterson was thrown from his sled. The horse was severely injured. She said, "the right back leg was completely shattered from top to bottom, the left was cut up and swollen." Later that night a vet said the best thing for Milo would be to put him down, Hannah agreed. Peterson was taken to St. Luke's hospital for a blood sampling and was issued a D-W-I. Since then, Hannah has gotten back up into the saddle, but she still misses her pet, Milo. She said, "he was really smart, he was the one who would get the others going, he was an instigator, picked on the others, called him a circus pony because he was so active." Timothy peterson, the snowmobiler could not be reached for comment. The St. Louis County Sheriff's Department says he was traveling at 35mph at the time of the crash.

One assumes "DWI" means "driving while intoxicated". (Up here we call it "DUI" -- "driving under the influence".) They better throw the book at the SOB. That's all I can say about that without getting very, very angry and very, very foul.

isn't that a theft? he stole the horse. He needs to be put before a good judge and be required to restore it at least monitarily. If the system dosn't do it the lady should sue.

No, he didn't STEAL the horse, Reuben. He destroyed it through his self-centred actions. I doubt the police will lay charges that include reimbursing the woman for her horse ... but they damn-straight better throw him in jail! Then, once he's out, the lady will have to sue for damages.
Whole thing makes me sick.
