Some of you might remember that I got asked to judge the 2006 Miss Highlands County Pageant last night.
Here was the current Miss H after her last walk on stage.

Let me just tell you how professional these girls had to be for this pageant. They had to make up resumes for themselves that were presented to the judges. A panel of 5 of us interviewed them for 5 minutes each before the nights competition. We asked them things like.....
If you could be a mentor to someone who would it be?
What is the best and worst asset about yourself? * I have been asked this in more than one job interview.
What is your most embarrasing moment?
What makes you qualified to be Miss H?
If you could meet ANYONE in the world you wanted....who would it be and why?
And we also asked them things from their resumes about their hobbies, interests, and extracarricular activities.
On stage, they did a cute dance number to These boots were made for walking
Then they had to do a Sponsor Presentation on stage where they could dress up or use props to talk about their sponsors. Some of the girls were really cute, and creative. It was fun to see what they came up with.
Then they did evening gown. *Mind you it was freezing cold. They modeled the dresses and then they had to answer a question that one of the other girls submitted. We had to judge how good the question asked was, as well as how the contestant answered it.
Then we went to top 5 and they all went back stage and got called out one at a time to answer the same question.
You might not think it....but going thru this really does help you in the future. Being able to give a presentation, speak well in public saved me more than once in college. I once gave a presentation on the most boering topic, but my delivery was so good no one noticed. 8-) Having good interview skills is must in the work force. Having a resume that stands out among all the rest is important. When you are in the room w/several equally as qualified applicants, you need that extra polish, that extra smoothness, that extra ability to sell yourself w/confidence to the employer and make them believe. YES, this is the right one. Believe it or not these pageants are a great way to gain these skills. Even if you don't win, you still carry the experience w/you. You learn what works and what doesn't, and that sometimes you can do your best and still not get the crown/job, but that doesn't mean you can't get the next one. ;-) Just some thoughts I was having on the way home to Miami last night on my long drive.
