View Full Version : Is my horse Fugly?

Keivn and I had a lovely Valentine's dinner last night and stopped to feed the horses on the way home. Lady was already out and ready for her hay so she started eating right away. Lexi and Spirit came from under the barn pretty quickly once she started munching. Lexi, being the alpha immediately went to where Lady was at and chased her to another hay pile.
Kevin looks at me, and then at Lexi and proceeds to say "I hate that horse, she is mean and fugly." I tried to explain that Lexi chasing Lady from the hay was simply herd dynamics, and all Lady had to do was assert herself and not let Lexi boss her around. He said fine, but that Lexi was still ugly and his horse (Lady) is the prettiest.
I don't think Lexi is fugly. Her mane is a bit sparse and she can look a bit haggard when she wants to, but hey - at 22/soon to turn 23 I think she is doing pretty well to be the alpha, win the affections of the 2 year old gelding and tolerate kids and cousins crawling all over her on the weekends. Everyone in the family thinks Lexi is mean because she is alpha. No-one understands that horses have a pecking order, Lexi is at the top and she is going to enforce her place when it is feeding time.
I just told Kevin that when I was older, he had better not call me fugly!
Men, always judging things by appearance. What do you guys think about her? Here is a summer and winter pic of her. Now, the winter pic is from when I was tying to get some pigpen pics of the horses after a nice rain and roll in the mud, so this would be her at her worst.

Ask Kevin how 'pretty' he'll be at 70?
She looks great!!! She's a great mare!
There will be a tiime when the tables will turn and she'll be to old to be alpha...I can tell you that it is very sad to see them when they start to fail, such proud animals.

When that time comes, Mel, you might consider building Lady her own roomy pen with portable paneling so that she can be near the other horses but not in with them. I did that for my old mare, Danzarina, as she was lame and actually frightened of the others...she was afraid they would drive her off and hurt her. Now she has her own pen by her Red stallion and totally content to be there.

She is NOT fugly! She looks pretty darn good for her age, just like my Margarita, she will also be 23 this year. Still alfa momma, too. Those poor geldings  . Guess I'll have to get out there and take some pics of my mean ole lady :D :D

In one of the pastures at our barn, the herd leader is 27, and his second-in-command is 35. The two of them have been head honchos for so many years, it's good to see that the other horses still admire and respect them. I think that certain horses seem to have an innate respect for the old guys, even if they are a little arthritic and not as fast. But I tell ya what....Max and Rocky can flat out run Buster (2 y/o) around that pasture when they feel like it!
Pitty takes complete advantage of his 1 1/2 years seniority over Ebby. Last night I had to feed them in the roundpen together, and as soon as Pitty was done, he marched over and took Ebby's food too (as I ran yelling "stop it you little pig!" over to get him away from there). Ebby gladly surrendered the grain, but Pitty found it necessary to pop his head up, slam Ebby on the noggin, and chase him away. Needless to say, I went in there and tied Pitty up at the other end of the roundpen so Ebby could eat in peace. Pitty proceeded to give me dirty little "I hate your guts" looks until I let him go. **sigh** boys...

LOL no horse is at its best with a full winter coat. She's no where near fugly.
Just wait, the tables will one day turn and HIS mare will be alpha, and then you can say.. ya remember when? hehehe.

Mel from seeing the pics I can only say NORMAL for a Paso. Hooves look ok and coat ain't bad at all. Heck I'm 64 and I ain't fugly maybe a little disagreeable at sometimes, but for my age and what I have gone through I feel pretty good. Your horse looks good too for the age. :D
And I don't remember who made the comment about men judging from appearances but it is totally wrong and to classify all men in that catagory.
If you want to learn about judging appearances just ask any veteran from VN if they judged by appearances. Especially after the person you just gave your MRE or candy to smiles at you and then tosses you a live hand grenade with no pin.
There might be a quick judgement from past experiences. Don't be too hard on Kevin
JMHO nice horse Mel

Not fugly! Not at all!
And don't you worry about her losing her seniority anytime soon. We have the old grinder...coming 35 (or is that 36?) this spring. He no longer leads the pack, but it's only been in the last couple of years that he's relinquished the alpha title. Now he's happy to share his lunch with the little up-shot, Damita.
I really must get a picture of his face for you. He was a black bay with just the tiniest of white stars. Now his face is very grey. It's pretty neat.

I think she's pretty. Now if Kevin wants to see "fugly" he needs to come up here and see a mare we board with. Big head, nose that makes a left turn, big old feet, big raw boned - but it's funny - with some decent senior feed she's looking and feeling lots better.
We separated our number two alpha who is 23 from most of the rest of the herd. She's with Brandy, our previously injured mare and Classy our mini mare and is still boss of them but she was so determined to keep up with the kids she lamed herself some in her arthritic knees. Now that she's not climbing mountains at a largo with the kids she much improved and no longer shows any lameness - just an occasional stumble but that's only at a walk. In gait she's very surefooted. She was showing off for two Arabians across the fence the other day - both she and Brandy - and it made us feel so good to see these formerly lame mares out there doing a big largo with their heads high and their tails in the air looking soooo gorgeous!! Even classy was doing her huge trot (huge for a mini anyway!) ;-) ;-) ;-)
It is funny how the younger ones respect the older ones even when the older ones don't go out and show how fast they are. They just have something that produces respect from the young ones. When we got our "big alpha" mare, our old mare didn't even contest her taking over the herd and the younger mare didn't show any agression to the older mare - it was kind of like the older one became the "queen mother" and was still treated with respect by all. The queen though became responsible for disciplining the kids rather than the queen mother who just observed. They are soooo neat!
Being a guy, I'd hazard to say that if she shows this post to her hubby, he's going to say "they're you're friends, silly, what did you expect them to say?!"
I wonder if in the second pic, she's thinking "Oh, thank you soooo much for taking my pic on a bad hair day!" lol
She's not ugly, BTW. I have an ugly TW. It's not his fault, and I still love/ride him anyway. Isn't like I'm Brad Pitt, myself. :D

Yup, Starr has taken my fugly horse and hidden her from the world. At least she has Starr's fugly horse to keep her company. Check them out. They look ashamed to be so fugly, don't they...
Lexi never did find a job as a therapist so she is hanging out in B-ville being a pasture potato.

Blairsville, GA. It isn't too far from North Carolina. The actually pasture is just over the Union/Fannin County line.
I started to say, if you look over the spotted mares' back you will see my dream home but alas... the trees have finally grown to where you can't see it. :-?
