I know I shouldn't do it, but if the hay smells a little off, I throw it to the side, and let the deer pick through it. This time of year, they don't have a lot to eat and it's been so cold lately.

Hey guys, whatch eatin?

Darn, too short to jump this hot wire, and I'm not going under!!

Can I share with you, big guy?

All right, but don't tell anyone.

Uh, I think I'll move to this pile over yonder...

A big buck came down right after this, but I could not get a good picture of him, he's just too flighty.

I like this doe, though. She'll just stand there forever:

Okay, I must be getting soft. I really secretly HATE these guys.

So cute! I know a lot of people think of deer as big rodents, but I think they are beautiful. So how did the little guy get in there? And how did he get out? I wonder if my horses would share their hay. Mico?, definitely not; Rio? he would be scared of the deer.

Absolutely fabulous pictures. Deer are beautiful even if they are destructive. It never ceases to amaze me who our horses will share with. Ours will beat up on each other but share with the goats and the mini. Our big white goats look like deer anyway so our horses probably would share with deer too.

I have 2 does and their yearling baby does cut thru here daily, sometimes 11 am, sometimes 4:30pm, sometimes lingering near the horses- more so to graze in the summer, but winter now, my horses WONT share! They ARE beautiful! But costly on the board fence, where I have it....
Now Thursday the one horse was chasing a big red fox....

Feeding time is usually 'musical hay piles' with the horses. Blue usually pins his ears and moves the others out when he's ready to try their hay. I'm surprised he shares with the deer.

If you look in the first pic, there is a board fence in the background, with a wire gate (no hot wire there). The deer usually jump there and the little ones go under. The big ones can clear the hot wire easily (although they don't mess with the wire around the haystack - pretty amazing).

That buck was so huge and majestic looking. I wish he would have stayed for a picture :(

I'd love to see a fox at my place, Stella. I've only seen them when we're camping in the hills. We had one come into our campsite one night. He wasn't even scared of us.

I saw a bald eagle today, flying above our place. That always makes my day.

 We use to tease a former neighbor about her 3 ghost horses !
She had 2 but if you looked over there about dawn or just after - you would see 5 shapes eating - 3 deer would jump the fence and use the salt lick and graze with her horses.

Not at my house!! Diablo is terrified of deer. There are elk above us...I live in terror of them moving down to where we are. Diablo would shred himself in a fence to get away.

Great pictures, thanks. We haven't seen many deer this year, but we do have coyotes in the spring...they "drop by" to drink at the pond. Spooky looking little things.

We too love to sit in the kitchen in the morning and watch the deer come eat. Who needs TV? We have one doe that has twins, almost every year on our property. She had two little bucks last season, man they are beautiful! I do not feed them on purpose, but they do love leftover hay, and bits of grain left by the horses. At night, I'l leave the horses outside if it's nice, I always check on them with the flaslite, then, There's too many eyeballs!! I only have three horses, but count up to 18 eyes
We hve a healthy herd move thru here on the average from 4 to about 24 on a daily basis. So much for my tomato crop this coming season season again :-? Gotta love'm!!

Lowes sells deer netting. It doesn't stop goats but it might stop deer from decimating your mater plants???
