View Full Version : Bad day for Listo - small update pg 2

Went out to feed this morning, and I saw blood in the snow. I realized it was Listo's front heel bulb. I got him in the corral and got some warm water in a jug and poured over the bloody area. He had a pretty bad cut. I called my friend to come look (she's a reg nurse and doctors her own horses quite often). In the meantime, I tried to figure out what caused this. I found a lot of blood around some tree limbs that were in the pasture, but all the small branches have been cut off so they wouldn't be dangerous.
After my friend looked at it, she said 'call doctor Ismay, it's pretty serious'. I called him and he said to come right in. He is the best foot/leg doc around. He's not my reg vet, but he's the best and we are so lucky to have him within 15 minutes.
Listo loaded into the trailer like a dream. Walked into the hospital, stepped on the scale (880#), and was so calm through everything. Doc said it looked like his tendon was cut and he'd do surgery right away.
He called this afternoon after surgery and had some better news. The tendon sheath was cut, but the tendon was not damaged. He went through surgery fine and is in a cast. He has to stay at the hospital until Mon or Tues, then I have to confine him to the barn for awhile, at least until the cast comes off (3-4 weeks).
I was worried about paying today and he said to call them on Monday, when the ladies are in the office. He has some kind of plan that I can pay monthly with no interest up to a year!! I was happy I didn't have to put it on my cc at 7.9% interest. It will be right around $1000 but he is hopeful that he will heal perfectly.
Please keep him in your prayers!! I love him so much. Doc says he'll be in 'intensive care' through tomorrow, then move to another stall in the hospital on Monday (which is only $25/day) so I can leave him longer if I need to.
What a day!!

WOW. I'm so glad to hear he's fine and that your vet has a payment plan. Our local surgery it's plastic or cash up front or no treatment. They can scare you to death can't they!!! Keep us posted and we expect to hear of his rapid and complete recovery!!!!
We were on Piedmont paso fino trail ride several years ago and I bet some people on here remember this. A really sweet stallion was at a horse trailer right next to us. We were eating and his owner came screaming to the food tent that her stallion had cut his heel. He had kicked out and cut it on the step on the horse trailer. He was standing in a pool of blood. Someone had a bloodstop pad and Kyle and I vetwrapped the heel tightly while they called a vet who came out and sutured the one of the vessels that was cut but couldn't get to the other one so they loaded him up and took him to the nearest vet surgical facility. I have no idea the outcome but we were so impressed with how good he was while we were working on him. His name was Bo is all I know and they were from NC. We always wondered how he did.

Oh, Deb. So sorry to hear about this, but I am very glad it looks like there will be a good out come. Poor Listo. I wonder how he did it.

Here's hoping Listo is a good boy about taking it easy and letting himself heal! Maybe something's buried in the snow, that neither horse or human can see, so doesnt avoid.....wear some sturdy shoes yourself, when checking, please!

Best wishes for Listo's full recovery and the return of your peace of mind. Sounds like you made all the right calls and are lucky to have such good care so close by.

You never know when they will find "something" to hurt themselves on!
Monty managed to get a 4 inch gash on his neck from a very small stub on a tree ,where I had cut off a limb!
If you have ice around - they can get cut on that too -
He may decide he likes it at the hospital with all the attention ;-)
Our Cody did - he was spoiled rotten - he had gotten kicked on the inside of his hock ,and had to stay at the clinic for a week !
Glad you caught it fast - it is SO great when you have good vets around!
Sounds like he was lucky - ;-)

Oh Debbie - I could hardly believe what I was reading. I know how much you love Listo and I wish him a full and speedy recovery!! You and Listo are in my thoughts and prayers! I am so sorry you have to go through this...luckily it is the tendon sheath and not the tendon. What a good boy to load and behave at the vets. Good luck with him - and keep me posted.
Your friend Andrea.

Hey Deb... you said Listo weighs 880 pounds.... would you please post a photo or two of him so people can see how BIG he looks as opposed to what he weighs? I remember him at Mile High, and he is not small!
Thanks!

Here is a pic, Terry. I am 5'7", if that gives a perspective. Listo is not bulky, but very solid. I actually guessed his weight at 850 when I was filling out his paperwork.

Today, John went looking around for more blood in the snow. We have an old chicken coop up in the woods. The building always seems pretty secure, although I hadn't really checked it out since fall. Some of the siding is a corrrugated metal. Some of this metal got loosened somehow (maybe in a windstorm). Listo loves to make noise. He's always banging the gate or an old well-cover. Anyway, John said it looked like something had gotten killed up there, so much blood. The piece of metal was attached to the building, but looked like Listo tried to remove it with his foot. John removed it from the building - along with all metal on the building and made sure there wasn't anything dangerous up there.
I'm kind of relieved it wasn't wire cut, because I knew that he might do it again, if that was the case, being we have 40 acres of wire fencing!!
We got a 'room' all fixed up for him today. I'm hoping doc will let me bring him home tomorrow - I'm taking the day off so I can go buy some grass hay to keep him busy and some aspen shavings for his stall.
Thanks so much to everyone for all your support, thoughts, and prayers. I'll let you know what happens tomorrow.

Gosh he's such a purty horse! Just make sure he knows this is NOT an acceptable way to get extra attention.
