View Full Version : Deaths from wormer?

I just got this on a yahoo group I am on. I don't know the people, and tried to verify the info, but couldn't find anything on it.
<<<We have had quite a tragedy at our ranch the last few days, and
after talking to
my attorney she gave me the go ahead to tell others about it. I
wormed 5 of my
horses with BIMECTIN wormer on WEDNESDAY, when I went out to give
them breakfast
on THURSDAY, they looked sick. My vet was contacted. Long story
short, by
FRIDAY they where down and could not get up, and by saturday and
sunday they DIED.
The other horses wormed the same day with a DIFFERENT wormer are
FINE. These horses
had the same feed, water, hay etc, the ONLY difference in the horses
was the WORMER.
My vet after seeing them told me he HAS seen this BEFORE. A MASSIVE
overdose of
wormer. Normally a batch of wormer made too strong at the factory.
THIS IS ONLY
A SUSPICION ON MY PART. I AM NOT ACCUSING THE COMPANY, I AM ONLY
PUTTING OUT MY STORY TO LET PEOPLE MADE THEIR OWN DECISIONS. The
necropsies will be performed on the horses and the wormers that I
still have from the case with the same lot numbers will be going to
independent labs for testing. We lost, 2 young stallions, 1 PREG
mare (due in June) 1 yearling, and 1 weanling is still breathing as
I type but
we expect her to die. Kerry

It's just 1.87% ivermectin. A brand of it. Jeffers and many others sell it. Ivermectin has a huge safety factor like X7 so if it was the wormer you wonder if it was contaminated with something else???

I'd like to see it verified. I agree with MGs, there normally is a big safety factor and a lot of quality control in these products. I imagine mistakes can happen and contaminants get in or overdoses happen. After all, those that make the product ARE human.
But, I also remember some horror stories about the WNV shot and abortions, about Pepsi, Coke, Bayer Asprin, plastic wrap in the microwave, white coffee filters...the list goes on..that all were false, just made up to scare the public.
If the story is true, I'd imagine more deaths will ensue because of the huge batches made...and some resulting law suits. I mean look at the news about the contaminated dog food.
I guess 'wait and see' is the optimum word right now. If someone is concerned, they SHOULD write the company.

The extra cost to buy from a well known company may be worth it, eh?
Interesting. I have 6 tubes of Bimectin. It's apple flavored ivermectin. Price was good at Country Supply so I bought ahead. I use ivermection spring and fall. I wonder what the lot # was on the wormer that is suspect. Decisions decisions.......
Anybody else ever use it????
CarolU

I used it last summer (the apple flavor makes it VERY easy to give) and had no ill effects.
I'd contact the company and ask them which lot number had the problem...They will be doing a recall on the bad lot IF the case reported really happened. If they have no knowledge of it, I'd start with where Linda got the post from and work my way backwards.

Very sad and interesting..I would love to find out more..

We've used it at least twice with no ill affects. Matter of fact we were getting ready to order another batch.
Guess I'll use the regular stuff. What a shame because the flavoring made it really easy to give.
I'd like someone to keep us posted on this one so we'll know if it's the wormer or something else.

I don't know where the original email came from, but it was posted to the gaited group on Yahoo. Here is the poster info...
From: tressa37122

Subject: [gaitedhorsesforsale] dewormer warning
If anyone wants to follow through with this. Pasoglide got more info somewhere...I haven't seen that post.
I also buy wormer a lot when I get sales emails from Country Supply, Jeffers and a couple of other places. I have one now from Dover for $2.99 1.87% Ivermectin.

Remember the tylenol poisonings??? Could be some nutcase put something in a batch to get back at the ocmpany for the distributor. The batch number is posted. You can at least check to see if the packaging has been tampered with - any puncture marks etc. Perhaps a vet school can check it??

or it might be that it had nothing to do with the wormer. or maybe someone just made up this story........

I was concerned about this because I ordered a batch from Country Supply last week. I spoke with them this morning and they had already cancelled my order and substituted it with the regular Ivermectin. I am very glad that they are being proactive.

CAM: MY LOT NUMBER FOR MY BIMECTIN IS;
5J020 EXP. 07/ SEPT.
I HAVE ALREADY GIVEN MY THREE HORSES, A DOSE OF THIS ABOUT 2 OR 3 WEEKS AGO. ALL WAS FINE.
I HOPE WE CAN FIND OUT THE BAD LOT NUMBER. THIS IS SCARY!
CarolU

CAM, did you contact them? What did they say about your lot number? I'm really interested to see if the story is fact or fiction.
I will call them Wed or Thursday. I assumed they may not be available 24/7 so will wait till I can call during the day.

I received this in an e-mail from the ever-active Susan Data-Samtak:
Subject: Warning of "On Sale" Bimectin Wormer from Country Supply killing horses - Fwd: dewormer warning
If you bought the "on sale" Bimectin Wormer from County Supply catalogue, DON'T USE IT! Not worth the risk! Report of several Andalusians being killed as a result of using it, while others treated at same farm with a different wormer are fine.

Country Supply has stopped supplying Bimectin. I've already sent in my request for a refund. Must be something to it.
Sigh...as if we don't need another thing to worry about. I'm already scared to death to vaccinate my horses...now we have to worry about worming them too. :(

That is the same lot# I have one left of not used. I did worm all the horses last November with no side effects. I do calibrate the weight on the dose plunger for the younger and smaller horses.
