I just got off the phone from Jeffers, gave them my batch number of the Bimectin wormer, I had purchased 10 of them back in November /05. The batch that I have is okay.
I had used 3 of them 3 weeks ago, and all okay. I can only imagine how scary it was for those people that lost their horse. I hope no more horses die from this.

Did they tell you the batch number that is bad? And did they actually confirm that this happened?

I have some I need to go check.

Thanks.

I see no other post with a link that confirms if this is true of a hoax yet. Can you please fill me in?

This is the link I saw:

http://www.horse.com/products/sku-BBL19.html

Not a confirmation on those horses, but something must be up if they aren't selling it.

This is what it says on the website:

"Bimectin
There is currently a possible safety issue regarding the use of Bimectin. Until we feel confident enough to give it to our own horses we suggest that you purchase Equimectrin (#BBL08) or one of our other deworming products. "

another update...

Bimeda
North America

Re: Bimectin (Ivermectin) Paste (Bimeda Brand of Equine Wormer paste)

To whom it may concern:

Regarding recent queries on the potency of Bimeda branded "Bimectin Paste", our Quality Control department has tested the potency of retention samples of Lot number 5J019 manufactured in October 2005.

Testing results reveal that the product manufactured respective to this Lot are within specification pursuant to the label claim and consistent with original Lot release last October.

Bimeda MTC Animal Health, Inc. the manufacturer of this product is an approved FDA facility producing quality equine paste for both European and North American markets. The facility extensively tests all raw materials and finished products prior to release to the market.

The company maintains extensive records of all testing and conducts on-going stability and validation programs to assure the products potency remains within specification ranges.

At this time, the Company "Bimeda" affirms that Bimectin Equine Paste is safe and effective for its intended use pursuant to label claims and use directions.

Sincerely,
Gavin L. Tierney
Chief Executive Officer

I think I'd like to see if the woman posts the resuts of the necropsy on her horses. If I had any of that batch number, I'd still 'wait and see.'

I do agree that most products are tested and sell to the public in extra-safe dosages (see my original post on this), but that doesn't mean someone didn't tamper with it or screw up one batch. BUT, you would think more horses then at one farm would be affected.

Wonder if she kept the used syringes. They should have enough residue to be tested for contaminants. Wonder if any authorities are involved????

It would be nice to confirm the story about the horses dying and to find out exact cause. Meanwhile, my Bimectin is the same lot # as that in question so I will err on the side of NOT using it whether or not I get any compensation for it. Its a matter of $16...a drop in the bucket. I will be making a couple of calls and inquiries later this morning.

In the tylenol case it was only a few bottles that were deliberately altered. Then there was the finger in the Wendy's chili . . . . . .

Or now how about the bird head in the can of beans??? That was a young single mother with three sons...sounds like she's needing a little extra income maybe??? Never heard any more about that one....

In reference to the Bimectin thing, I hope the woman is kind enough to report the findings of the necropsies. So many times if it turns out to not be what they originally thought, they don't have the decency to report that on the Internet also. It just keeps going round and round and round that the wormer, or drug, or vaccine or whatever, is the cause.

How easy it is to ruin someone's reputation, or business affairs...or life...by what you post on the Internet. I guess it is something that should always be considered...what will the reprocussions be of what I post? How many will be affected, negatively or positively, by what I say on this medium that reaches round the world?

It seems unusal that no other horses have been reported sick or died from this, then the one farm. I wonder if someone tampered with it on her end or in route. There is not a seal on those paste wormer syringes ... I checked the one I still have left...it comes in a cardboard box not sealed, and then not wrapped/sealed in plastic inside. You can take the endcap off the syringe easy enough.

A woman here contacted Bimeda and talked to them. This is the e-mail she sent me this afternoon:

I again talked today with Celine Nicol at Bimeda 888 524-6332.

The recall was issued by Country Supply, not Bimeda.

Bimeda does have the results of the necropsies which they got back yesterday - deaths involved only one Country Supply customer and not related to Bimectrin and well as Bimeda retested batch lot 5J019 which has tested fine.

My friend Peggy Adams just wormed her 6 horses 5 days ago with Lot 5J019 (did not know about problem with Country Supply) so she was very concerned. Bimeda has reassured her this was only ONE Country Supply customer and has been proven by Bimeda that deaths not related to Bimectin. Her horses are fine.

Bimeda has encouraged anyone to call if they have questions - (888) 524-6332.
