About 6 weeks ago my PasoX got a rope burn on his rear fetlock that was fairly minor. At the time I was treating him for a huge bite wound on his side and didn't even treat it. About three weeks ago I noticed that it had festered and developed a lot of scabbing. I've been treating it with Fura-zone, but haven't made any progress. I'm thinking that his system was vulnerable with the big open sore on his side and somehow that made him vulnerable to further infections.

After cleaning it up, removing the scab I would suggest you double dose the horse with ivermectin and i also put ivermectin directly on the wound. I had a wound like that go for six months despite every treatment i could think of. This finally worked. Flies lay eggs in the sore and the larvae feed on it and it continues to attract more flies. The ivermectin will kill the larvae and act as a repellent also. My mare's sore cleared up in a matter of days after I did this. I've heard that applying ivermectin directly doesn't work to cure "summer sores" but the sore healed so obviously it does work in some cases anyway. good luck and let us know what works. Oh - I did apply the paste wormer liberally and have since used it on a deep wound that was nearly healed but the mare wouldn't leave the dressing on and flies were getting to it. I actually used an entire tube. The wound healed beautifully. So whether it actually kills the larvae or just repels the flies I don't know but it did work quite well.

desitin is good, wash and try to remove the largest scabs, air dry and apply desitin.

Wash and scrub with betadine scrub, rinse, towel dry and then apply a furizone sweat (furizone on area, saran wrap, then a standing wrap) Don't leave on more than 24 hours. If it is scratches, you will see some improvement. You can use with DMSO with the furizone as well but I usually don't use the DMSO when I am sweating, only when I am leaving it open.

I had some furazone left over from the bite wound cure and yesterday a stablemate had me almost do the sweat. I didn't use the saran wrap though. We haven't had flies for more than a month so I'm sure we don't have larvae, but I just found on the internet that the worming medicine helps to kill fungal infections. When it lightens up here today I'll see if my "half" sweat from yesterday loosened the scabs.
I just looked around for some desitin left over from diaper days 10 years ago but alas it is all gone.

These sores can also be caused by worm larvae in which case the ivermectin will work also.
All you can do is try until something works. Those sores can be very annoying.

You might try summer sore medicine as well if the sweat does not work.
