I took Vence off of grain a couple months ago (too fat) and put him on the TDI 10 suppliment (what Roger gets for his HYPP) and hay. Look at this boys mane!!!!!!!!!

What do you think is accounting for the growth?

I love the first pic - did you braid it? I was thinking of doing that to Listo's for the horse expo. The summer pic with all the trees is really pretty too....

What kind of hay do you feed him? Does he get beet pulp also?

flake T/A in the am...grass hay the rest of the day (when out with llamas) and at night when he goes back to the stall....1/2 lb TDI 2 X day...

NO feed....TDI 10 suppliment and hay NO pulp I am sure it is the TDI as I cut 2" of tail off Roger a month...it stays bagged..I did it yesterday and had to cut 4" off to make it almost hit the ground..

Vence is dreamy, as usual. He just reeks of good health and contentment. Good job Shelley!

According to the weight tape, Amante went from 930# to over 1,000# over the winter! Mojo gained 30# (probably all hair :D ) The tape must have stretched!

I have gained 15# myself since October. (probably all arse  )

Pitty's gained about 20# himself! In December I started him on the "weight gain diet", and he's certainly done a good job keeping it up! I now I have to jerry-rig a chest extension on his blanket (the one I had to buy to replace the OTHER blanket he outgrew).

With Listo being stalled, I'm so worried he's going to gain weight. He's used to running in his 20 acre pasture, all hills. He's always been such a lean, easy-keeping horse with lots of energy and barely breaks a sweat when we go all day .... now I'm worried he's just eating all day and getting fat :(

I obviously can't take him out, because his cast may get wet or dirty. Plus, as energetic as he is right now, he'd probably get away from me! He gets a little alfalfa twice a day (maybe 5# ea time) and prairie grass hay all day. Grained once a day because of meds.

So you didn't go for the wonder sedative that would buzz him for 3 weeks?

Barb, I was really tempted last week. Friday would have been a good day for me to take him in and get it done. I decided I was really going to try to work him through his crazy stomping routine every time I even looked at his wraps. My son came out and held him for me (and the flashlight), feeding him treats each time he didn't stomp for even a few seconds. ...

I got him to where I can totally redo the bandages now with no help! I know the shot would have been easier, but it was a good lesson in trust for both of us

He does bang on his "Mr Ed" door whenever he sees me getting ready to feed. That cast sure makes a loud noise. I about wet myself this morning!!

Okay, I'm lost, what are TDI 10 suppliments?

Deb - do you have some toys in there for him? Jochi epitomizes boys, and plays with anything. He had a similar accident on his heel bulb (we didn't have to operate, no cut tendons) but he was on stall rest for a couple of weeks. We had Jolly balls, road cones, you name it in there with him. He likes to take the cones and throw them out his window, over the fence, anywhere! It's hysterical. Then he waits for you to get them again so he can do it over.

He'll heal fast !

Deb, I did give him a jolly ball and he has some rubber dishes in there he likes to throw around. I was thinking of one of those apple treat hanger things.... has anyone tried them? He's not a real 'playful' guy, although he loves to make noise and scare me to death!

Did your guy heal up okay? That worries me so much. After all this time and $$, what if he isn't 100% when it's all said and done?

Appy, we still love your boy's mane ;-) ;-) ;-)

Appy, it looks (eyeballing the before/after photos) like Vence's mane is growing over an inch a month! That is fabulous mane growth!!!

..I'm with April, what is TDI?

Deb - he's good as new - the heel bulb even formed back and the vet wasn't sure it would. I'm not sure if Listo is a piggy like my Jochi, but he wouldn't leave that treat alone until it was 100% gone, so I can't use that.

I'll help Appy out - she already told me about the TDI 10 as I have easy keepers as well:

Stallions are great at growing mane. Longest one I had here was 38" of length and 2" thick across the neck, of chestnut/flaxen beauty. Its also "in the genes" of some horses of course.

I don't feed anything special, and Sultan has mane thicker & longer...so don't discount genes!

Had a Mar de Plata mare (Stella has her now) with tremendous mane..a good 28" long or more...no special feed there either.

Vence looks great Shelley! HOW LONG IS IT? How long at the longest point (mid-crest)?
