I used the 10.2 oz bulk SafeGuard dewormer on my herd of 17 a couple of days ago. As bulky as it all seems - with the applicator gun and large tube of paste - it actually went pretty well.... 15 out of 17 presented varying degrees of indifference, while only 2 were totally indignant.

The nice thing is that every 'click' of the gun dispenses enough wormer for 220 pounds... So one click each took care of the recommended 'double' dose for the colt and filly and depending on guesstimated weight and age, others got between 2 and 5 clicks. We did 2 foals and 13 full grown horses with one 10.2 oz tube and finished up the last two grown horses with the second tube. That 2nd tube should have enough for 13-14 full grown horses nex timeand we can just get a smaller tube or another big one to top off...

Best of all, the doses that sell for $5-6 dollars apiece cost - on average - +/- $2.50 each. A huge savings! The expense of the applicator gun is a one time purchase cost, so future usage will cost even less.

Anybody else tried bulk wormers?

It goes without saying, we have no sick or contagious horses on the property or I would not use or recommend a bulk applicator...

The cheapest I could find the bulk safeguard was $52. Supposed to be 10 dose

Did you get in cheaper?

(http://www.jeffersequine.com/ssc/product.asp?CID=1&mscssid=BQX7E1WLM18H8MSMN3T9TETTPP1DDEJ5&pf_id=11504) The 10.2 oz is labeled on the box for cattle, but I called and they said it was identical to the horse. In the 10.2 oz description it also says horses. They used to package it with 'For Cattle' on one side of the box and 'For Horses' on the other side.

I can tell you that after the bulk 'adventure', all horses are still 4 feet down and 2 ears up... ;)

I6-S2 Safe-Guard® Paste, 1 ds (25 gm) $6.79

I6-S4 Safe-Guard® Paste, 10.2 oz. cattle ds (290 gm) $38.49

I6-S5 Safe-Guard® Applicator Gun (for use with 290 gm) $10.95

I6-S6 Safe-Guard® Paste, 3.2 oz syringe (92 gm) $23.95Just redid the math and the first use including cost of the applicator 'gun' actually averaged about $3.50/horse - still half price of single doses. Next time (w/o cost of gun), it will average about $2.75/horse.

One of the best things about the bulk applicator is that you can easily adjust amount for each horse... Ours range from foals at about 100-125 pounds to mature horses that tip the scales at close to 1000 pounds. One click does 220 pounds, so it's perfect for a foal double dose. 5 clicks will take care of a thousand pound horse. A 10.2 oz tube carries about 58 'clicks' for 220# each.... 12, 760 pounds total. That's about $0.66 a click (220#)! Users are strongly cautioned - do not _underdose_!

This is also a _lot_ cheaper way to powerpac your horses in the spring... 5 double doses (5 consecutive days) of Panacur (also 10% fenbendazole) can run over $50 per horse. For foals in the hundred pound range, the bulk method would cost less than $3.50 total!!! Full size horses in the 880-900# range would average +/- $26.50 for 5 days of double dosing. About half of any other method...

Once you get the hang of it, the applicator and clicks are easy. The only drawback I see is that it takes two people to administer unless your horses 'open wide' on command....

I usually get the wormers from Valley Vet, or one of those places that send me email specials. They run about $2.50 per tube for just regular tubes. Some are a lot less.

Ivermectin is a lot cheaper - generally - but it doesn't get the same parasites as Fenbendazole.
