Trying to find a good home for Robbie (Roberto Wahoo), a 17 yr old
bay registered paso gelding (#89434, Hilaches great-grandson). Last
fall, I took him in for a girl that could no longer care for him.
Little did I know that I was riding a horse with laminitis. Since the
diagnosis, he has been cleared by the vet's farrier to ride, but I am
too heavy for him plus I ride for a number of hours. He is being lightly
ridden almost daily by a neighbor and he is barefoot. I do know the
history of this horse as he used to live near me about 6 yrs ago (I rode
him then, too), then he was sold, then I took him in last August.
Robbie is current on all shots, has coggins, and has had his teeth floated.
He needs regular trims to keep him sound. I believe he is around 14 hands
Gets along well with other horses - and chickens! LOL
Robbie's attributes are as follows:
traffic and neighborhood safe
stays in gait (he gaits around the pasture)
will ride alone
knows how to stand and flex with one rein (right and left)
a little hot but not too bad, ride with loose rein and half-halt to
slow him
if startled, he "spooks in place," doesn't bolt or buck or rear
excellent ground manners, very sweet horse, safe for kids to groom or
go into my pasture area
stands for mounting and dismounting
good with shots, vet, farrier, worming, stands tied, and loading (I
taught him to "send" into a trailer)
loves other horses, doesn't fight with them (except he didn't like my
mini)
very mannered during feeding time (will wait)
Disadvantages:
past history of laminitis
doesn't like for other riders to leave but I just stay aware of that
(gets nervous but doesn't take off)
needs low starch, low sugar feed and very little amount
maintain his feet to keep the pressure off the soles (correct
trimming; can't let his hooves get too long or flared)
he was fine getting shoes twice for the laminitis, but later he acted
nervous when shoeing. The farrier said he's fine to leave barefoot.
farrier suggested front boots (Old Mac,etc) for riding but my
neighbor tried him with and without Old Mac boots and she didn't
notice a difference when riding him
not currently suitable for heavy riders or distance riding
