I could not be happier!!! Bien's Insulin is now NORMAL!!! It has taken 20 months, and she is sound enough to ride again, but at a walk. I am doing 10 minutes of PT with her, lots of stretching and suppling, then 20 minutes of brisk trotting. Then a ride a walk with lots more bending, backing, and turning.

Thanks everyone. It has been a long and interesting journey. I need to write it up for others. I think I tried everything with this horse, even now she is entered in Dr. Frank's next study. Two lessons I'll share immediately are to treat aggressively and don't wait for your local vet to come up with answers for you. The study of metabolic diseases in horses is ongoing and changing daily. Even the "experts" don't know the answers. :mecry:

I'm so glad for you. I like your advice to not wait for your local vet to come up with answers. If I had waited, my gelding would have been in bad shape.
I'm getting sentimental reading about all the laminitis/founder issues on this board. I just found out that a paso I sold, was resold and has developed severe laminitis and maybe founder. I feel like if she had stayed with me, it may not have happened. I warned the lady about pasture, etc. She was thrown on pasture all winter. And, she is not letting her vet draw labs on her because she doesn't want her "labeled". Needless to say, I am not happy, esp. with myself. I offered to take her back, but I'll probably get her after she is beyond full rehab. Sorry, just needed to vent. I'm so glad Bien had a dedicated "mother".
i am SO sorry to read your story, Jodi. **sniff** :mecry:
i can hardly wait for Carol's write up. wish i had kept track of the years of H-E-DOUBLE Hockey sticks that i put my mare thru before realizing that she was insulin resistant. the pain, the shoeings, the 3 years of pain before i got it figured out. i could write a book . . . .
